This probably puts the kibosh on any future political ambitions for the other Duggar Smuggar sons

I think I fixed it....

That means a pedo?

Yes. It’s a very common term in Gaol.

Well to be fair it's just the name, we're don't really do search and rescue.

That is what the ferrets are for!

Rock spider or rocky  is still pretty commonly used.
I didn’t realise it was so old. I knew it had to be at least twenty years old....

...and I’ve just looked up the origin of the phrase as Australian prison slang and why they are called that and I need brain bleach :brainbleach:. It’s amazing the number of phrases that were normal to me growing up as a copper’s kid that were, in fact, completely inappropriate. Time to have another belated talk about boundaries with my parents ffs.

I think most women would be shocked by the amount of men who are actually attracted to young girls without offending. The most searched pornography terms are related to teens and incestuous relationships. Then if you take into account the rate of girls/women who are sexually assaulted or abused, you'll find that there are a lot of men walking amongst us who have very disturbing sexual interests.

This is so true, unfortunately.  A lot step dad, uncle/ step daughter/neice porn out there. Mainstream even.  Much more violence towards women in porn now.

It used to be enough to watch two people getting it on, now it's pretty sick and very available.  It's a problem.   Not saying it wasn't to begin with but honestly,  it's devolved into some sick stuff that used to be hidden.   Not ok ever but the tolerance for this is horrific.  It's affecting the younger generation.  We used to look at someone's dad's playboy and try and see between the scrambled lines of the naughty channels.  Imo, that's a ton better than what kids can see now from their phones before they even get to 1st base.  It's not curiosity,  it's harming them, imo.

This is not true and is a horrible thing to say.

Thank you for pointing this out.

I'm still trying to get caught up in the thread, but good gravy, ya'll.  The Duggars do not represent all Christians or all Republicans.  Don't pretend they do.

Sincerely, a CSA survivor.

Will you be giving us a list of what we are and aren't allowed to pretend, or is this our only directive?

If you care that much, maybe you should deal with the real issues that are destroying evangelical Christianity & the GOP from within rather than tone policing a snark board

What, like sexual abuse?  yeah, that's what I'm doing.

Have a good evening.

Oh my WORD - I just had to go look it up myself. I was liking the term rock spider as opposed to pedophile or pedo...or child molester...'till I saw WHY the term is used (specifically in prison).

I may still use it when referring to the subject of this thread.

I get that if you identify as a Republican, you don’t want “Republicans don’t care about sexual assault” to be true, but that doesn’t make it not true.  Since 2016, the GOP party line has been that sexual assault - even of children - is not disqualifying and barely warrants a mildly disapproving statement. If you don’t buy into that philosophy (and I sincerely hope no one here does), then perhaps it’s time to realize that the Republican Party as it used to exist no longer does. The Trumps, Gaetzs, Roy Moores, etc aren’t outliers and outcasts anymore.

This kind of thing has been going on for years with BOTH parties. I live 9 miles from DC and deal with bullshit political people everyday, elected officials are for the most part, scum and out for themselves. They come here with modest means and leave 10 years latter very wealthy. Believe me , the democrats cover up all sorts of sexual misdeeds. Barney Frank had sexual relations with young Pages and was allowed to remain in office. Lots of this over the years including a former First Lady playing around with freshman college girls from Mary Washington .

I looked it up too, and wish I hadn’t. I prefer to go with my initial assumption that it was a reference to being “creepy”. I remember reading it in a crime novel once where a murder victim was found with his pants down and camera in hand, on a rocky outcrop in the bush with a view of a toddler swimming pool. The murdered guy had been a pedophile, but that particular scene became my association with the term and because he was found on rocks in the bush, I’d never thought to question where the phrase came from.

I think I’m ok with the phrase (just another opportunity to embrace my traditional crass Australian vernacular that we so enjoy) but think I’ll just be more aware about the location if I were to use it in public...and I’ll try to subtly hint to my parents about making better choices when speaking in front of the grandchildren than they did with my sister and I.

I’m Australian and introduced the term on this thread - I had to look it up too, I just thought it meant creepy, scuttling around in the shadows and makes your skin crawl. Ugh.

Also, actual spiders on rocks are camouflaged, lurking and you don’t necessarily know they’re there.

Like a pedophile. Disgusting all round.

As someone who works in an industry that deals with these kind of people, you kind of develop a warped language. You become so unaccustomed to word meanings in the real world that you forget the shockingness of them. I now liken it to a tour bus in Europe with a German chick. She was horrified how much everyone was throwing around the word nazi. Soup nazi, don’t be such a nazi. She pointed out that would never happen in Germany they had to much respect for the severity of that word to make light of it. Since then I have made an attempt to down play that word. It should never be used as a joke. I must admit, I am pretty good at keeping my very harsh work vernacular at work. But I must try harder.

It took me  while to catch up on posts from earlier today.

Ma and Pa's statement, it really made them seem clueless. I doubt they have any idea of what impact this is having and will have if justice is served.

Again, Josh Duggar can go to h3ll. I have no pity for him.

Re: the black eye - I don't see it either. He has one eye that droops a little more than the other but that's not that uncommon in real life (and can be exacerbated by being tired/stressed) and I can see it in some other earlier, non-mug-shot photos. What some are saying is bruising looks to me like crap lighting in the mug shot. I say this as a person who's got an eye that tends to pick up weird shadows and in most of my work ID pics I look like someone has punched me in the face.

I never really thought about it, but your German friend is right. I am Italian and in my language expressions like "grammar nazi" don't exist. When we define someone or something "nazista" or "fascista" we really mean it. We don't throw around those terms casually as it happens in many English sayings. Different perspectives I suppose.

Maybe his swollen eye is like an allergy thing. I often get a hay fever reaction in one eye only.

I never realized how offensive the term was - I'd heard it in a lot of contexts, always to describe someone who was super-strict. I thought nothing of it until I was trying to show a coworker a meme I'd found about a grammar nazi and when I typed in that search all the results were blocked by my workplace filter.
