In all fairness, Daisy, Poppy, Buddy, and River are relatively normal (and becoming popular), at least where I live.

But with those middle names? Daisy Pamela Oliver would be a perfectly normal name. Daisy Boo Pamela Oliver is not.

As a sidenote, I always think of River as a girls' name, but maybe I just watch too much sci-fi.

I think that's the case here (the States) too to be honest. A lot of parents know their name choice ahead of time or have a few options - but if not I'm pretty sure they refer to the baby as "Baby Boy/Girl <Last Name>" until a choice is made abd the birth certificate is filled out. Maybe a parent who has experience with this can confirm if that's the case?

Here you don't offcially have a name until you send in the papers so everyone is boy/girl first. If parents haven't chosen a name in three months they get a warning letter and are told they will be fined if they don't pick a name. I assume some must have been fined but most people send in the paperwork as soon as they arrive after a week or two.

Kaur is the name Sikh women are given, as a second surname, as one of the religious rules, in the same way all Sikh men have Singh.  There are really interesting reasons behind it, and problems that have arisen where some countries' immigration (most notably Canada) refused to recognise it as a surname, regardless of the religious use.

Did anyone else think it was weird that Michael held Zach and Whitney's baby nonstop when she and Brandon were at the picnic during last week's show?  I can see wanting to hold the baby for a while, but she wouldn't let anyone else touch her.  She seemed obsessed.  It must be tremendously upsetting for her not to have gotten pregnant by now.

I believe it was discussed a little bit in the Michael and Brandon thread. Between that and a couple little comments she's made on Instagram, it definitely seems like they're having some issues in regards to conception, or at least they were at the time of the episode.

I don't live near my nieces either and when I go see them, I hog them all to my self. Seriously. I even get up with them while I'm there. And I even have my own kids ;-) so I don't think it's all that crazy.

There is a porn star that goes by the name of Lexi Belle. I'm just thinking that maybe there should be a name generator for young parents that excludes "porn star" type names.

So funny you say this. When selecting a 'pen name' as a writer, writers frequently say they google names to make sure its not being used by a porn star first.

After reading the name discussion, how would you feel, if someone was named what is considered a nickname, if they chose the long form of their name to use as a professional (nick)name? My brother's name is Larry (on his birth certificate), but my aunt frequently called him Lawrence. This would work unless you were a Bunny, Buffy, Muffy, Bambi, or something like that. I don't think anyone would stop that person.

I actually have a case like this in my family regarding my aunt. Her legal name is "Ivka," spelled that way. However, everyone calls her "Ifka," her nickname. Now when she got married, she moved far away and people in her new town started calling her the formal name of the Ivka nickname, which is Ivanka. As a child, I was always so confused when people called her Ivanka as I knew her as "Aunt Ifka." She now answers to Ivanka however, and prefers to use that name in her profession.

I tend to think that whether big or small, people have a reason for "changing" their name, even if it's nickname to legal name or vice versa. It must be (maybe is for certain people?) hard for people close to that person to change what they call them, but you all sound very understanding and supportive. FreeJinger impresses again.

A delicious SOTDR fail from a friend of the Bates (in the comments Kelly Jo identifies her as a college student, so probably a Crownie):

Maybe that's how it is spelled in the KJV? ;)

I haven't seen much discussion of last week's episode.  Did anyone watch?  I only saw the first 2 mins and then turned off the recording.

I actually know a girl named Riesling. Bit odd, but she pulls it off. At least her name isn't Gewürztraminer.

I met an Abcde pronounced pretty much how it looks AB-Ce-Dee  when I was in university and it was odd.

I'm late to the game...

My friend is a teacher and has a "Barracuda" in her 8th grade class.

That same friend? Her last name is Rhodes. And she has a daughter named Icy. (Isis, but they call her Icy. Because apparently that's better.)

Well, these days Icy is probably preferable to Isis. I think that it's a lovely name, but Daesh ruined it.

Aye, there was an article in the news a while ago about parents who regret their kids' names, and one woman was quoted as saying she loved the name she'd given her young daughter, but it had since been associated with a terrorist organisation. My money's on the girl being called Isis, which I agree is a lovely name but, sadly, most people now associate it with IS.

I watched a few minutes and changed the channel. Watching paint dry was more interesting. I did tune in for the last few minutes to see what was coming up in the next episode.

A guy I'm Facebook friends with and his wife name their daughter Isis. In late 2014. WHY? WHY? WHY would you do that to your child?

Oh god, no.  There's going to be no reclaiming that name for the powers of good anytime soon.  I really hope she has a middle name.

Call me crazy, but i actually enjoy watching Bringing Up Bates far more than I do Counting On.

19 Kids&C had that overarching weird, fake vibe, but Counting On is just that much worse, given what we know now that Josh's skeletons have come tumbling out of the proverbial closet. I watched the recap special this week where they showed all the clips from the latest season, and while there were some moments of genuine laughter and comraderie between the siblings, most of the time they all just looked miserable, like they were playing their character/part of the whole circus.  Jessa with her wide open mouthed fake laughing, Jill crying and looking like she would rather be anywhere but in that room, Derick with a sort of lost look in his eye, Ben with his dull stare and awkward one liners, Joy, who wouldn't have looked more JoyLESS, Jana with her usual half-hearted smile about how boring and shitty her life is, and Jinger, the worst of them all in my opinion, the worst example of all the fear and submission and anti- self-esteem that is instilled in these children. Then along comes Jeremy, more fakeness and over-the-top serious holier-than-thou attitude.
When the camera stops rolling, I don't believe they have much to say to eachother. Even the "poking fun" at eachother in some of the clips, had an undercurrent of nastiness about it, especially from Jessa....big surprise. She is so jealous Jinger gets Jeremy and she's stuck with that stupid idiot Ben. If anything, if Ben hadn't come along when he did, Jessa would have definitely preferred someone like Jeremy I believe.  He's the more mature, more educated, more capable version of Ben. Shame.....but her envy is palpable.
We all know some of  what happened to those girls and all of the kids when they were younger, i feel that has really manifested in how they have turned out as adults, and it's very sad to watch frankly. There just feels as though there is always a lingering sadness, just hiding behind some fake smiles.

Then you have BUB. No Matter how strict their upbringing with Gil and Kelly, I don't get the feeling that someone as major as sibling sexual abuse occurred with these kids.  There is a level of trust you see in the interactions with eachother (aided also probably by lack of the weird side-hug thing Michelle and Jim-Bob made up because they are awful, only made things worse!), there is an encouraged familial affection between the siblings and parents and grandkids, other family members that you just don't see in the Duggars.
Yes they are cheesy and yes they are crazy in their beliefs, but i get the feeling that even if they are living in their little fundie bubble, they are at least happy and have positive encouragement from Gil/Kelly to achieve something in their lives other than stay trapped at thome controlled by Daddy.

Again, just my humble opinion, not saying that is everyone elses's view whatsoever.

But that is one of the main reasons I would rather watch BUB rather than Counting On, and don't find it boring at all. I've actually LAUGHED at some of the things they have said when they are joking around, it's been heartwarming to see KaciLynn and Brooklyn/Carson etc. born, and i'm not ashamed to admit that.

Everytime I watch the Duggars, I just feel so miserable afterwards, because they are miserable, deep down at the heart of this whole messed up social experiment JimBoob and Michelle created.

I still haven't watched last week, but last night was Brooklyn's birth and I watched that.  I'm a very private person and could not imagine having 6 family members watching my child being born, in addition to my husband, the doctor and the nurses.  Not to mention everyone else trooping through later.  But, that's what she wanted.  She had a great, easy birth.  I'm happy for her after what she went through with Carson, but I am definitely jealous.

The episode also briefly featured Michaella.  She is now selling children's clothes/dresses online.  She was asking Chad for business advice.

I watched last night's episode and I thought it was funny that Chad mimicked our thoughts on Erin being crazy for getting a puppy right before she was due and already having a toddler at home.

This is the only episode I have actually watched all the way through. they have been so boring. I feel like Erin isn't quite as boring because she does things with her life.
