This was an utter failure by law enforcement. He'd done this before, and it was obvious he meant to do it again. If they had to let him out of prison (I think they released him early) he needed to be kept under close observation.

I remember reading about this last summer. I believe he refused an attorney because he didn't recognize the court's authority. 

He spent ten years in prison and had only been out for three weeks!

You know, I get that there are rules about what to do with gay people in the Hebrew Bible, but I was under the impression that all branches of Judaism considered preserving life as of the utmost importance, to supercede the law in almost every case. Did this guy seriously think he was performing a mitzvah? What could possibly have justified this?
