Does this mean the Rodriguii are going to do Christian death metal?

Their music is already the most brutal thing I have ever heard.

Gustava must live in a beautiful part of Appalachia. We have a mission group go their every fall & they said there's abundant poverty. I just feel like Ben would be better accepted there. Can you see jessa living in that run-down section of St. Louis. And I know that's what she was thinking.

Beauty and poverty aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. To me they're both accurate descriptions that don't conflict at all.

Honestly I don't think Ben would fare particularly well in Appalachia either unless he changed his attitude and self-presentation significantly. There would be some superficial similarities that might make it seem like he would fit in well (for example, he'd probably be interacting with people of his own race and they would likely also be a brand of religiously conservative,) but the cultural divide would be huge, and for various historical reasons people in Appalachia don't tend to respond very well to outsiders who think they know better trying to come dictate what they should do.

I grew up in Appalachia, and it's true, there's poverty. But someone like Ben showing up to do some self-promoting poverty tourism isn't going to help. What exactly is a young, voluntarily underemployed, barely educated wannabe rapper/reality TV star who lives off money he didn't earn going to offer to people in truly difficult circumstances? Why do people who are likely already Christians need his naive and inexperienced preaching? And culturally speaking, a lot of his self-presentation would be considered rude and presumptuous.

I can't imagine Ben being accepted at all in Appalachia. At best he'd look ridiculous, and at worst he could really anger people. People might be more polite to him than they would be in St. Louis (and even with that, I wouldn't go any farther than might,) but I don't think he'd truly be any better accepted.

@Mercer  You have described Benye, and in many ways, Jillrick so very well. He looks to me like someone who has never put in a hard day's work in his life. Or, maybe just one (cleaning the toilets)

My ancestral homeland, Southern Appalachia is a big place. It includes hipster brewpubs in Asheville, ski resorts in Boone, college towns like Blacksburg and Knoxville...it isn't all dying West Virginia coal towns.  I doubt that the median income of many of these places are lower than in most of Arkansas.

Ben and Jessa live in the foothills of the Ozarks. If they feel the need to minister to "barefoot hillbillies" they can minister to their own damn selves.

I got to thinking about ole Binny Boy yesterday and the pickle he finds himself in.  He is 19 with all of the racing testosterone, arrogance, and energy that entails but his religion has put him into this tiny beige box with few outlets.  He should be out tackling the world head on, learning about himself, the world, and his place in it.

Undoubtedly his whole life he has been told that he is someone special, that God is working through him, that the Holy Spirit shines through his face and all he needs to be successful in life is to love the Lord fervently.  He is fervent but rudderless and I think he might even be bored and a bit confused.  He has so much:  the dream girl, a son, a television career and a large support system so why does he seem like a loser and douchecanoe?  Mainly because he believed all of the hype about himself and how he, Bin, could change the world.  Now he is stuck changing poopy diapers and I have a feeling he was not expecting this outcome when he was courting that pretty girl he saw on TV. He thinks he knows all the answers but I have to forgive him for that, he is just young and doesn't know how stupid and arrogant he is.

I blame his parents more than Ben. His parents could have put a stop to this entire debacle right from the start when he was still a minor. I have a 25 YO son, and had he, at age 16-17, come to me with the idea of pursuing a reality TV member, nearly 3 years his SR, some 4 hours away from home, he would have been redirected to some more age and geographically (and realistically) appropriate activities. For example, schooling, sports, an afternoon job or dating the 16-17 neighbor or girl from our own church congregation.

Was there a shortage of girls his own age, from his own town?????

His parents seemingly encouraged this fantasy that has now become somewhat of a nightmare.

I had to google Lacrae. Before Ben, I had no idea christian hip hop was a thing. Christian rock, yes. But not hip hop. Looks like Ben at fun. I'm sure Jessa chose to stay home. Can you imagine her just standing still in that crowd and not singing along or smiling?

Picture this scenario........

Ben walking down the street in the "inner city" looking for someone to minister to. Coming at him are several ladies of the night. No one is around to yell "NIKE!!!!". Ben gazes at the wonders before him as the ladies start to circle him, taunting him, playing with him....then Ben finds his voice and in a squeaky voice starts to minister to these ladies.

I will let you finish the scenario in your head....the possibilities are endless and infinitely amusing.

I'm glad to hear Ben went to an event without Jessa. That's really... normal. The Duggar couples often seem way more joined at the hip with their spouse than is healthy. Having some time to yourself to pursue your own interests can really strengthen a relationship, and I'm glad Ben and Jessa seem to be starting to recognize that they're separate people who can handle being apart for a few hours.

I agree, for the Duggar Cult, this is HUGE. Maybe Jessa is sick of him too. Maybe a little breathing room is what they both need?

I agree, and I hope this helps them grow as people and as a couple. :)

Appalachia is large and varied, and has the most racially diverse population in the US. There's abundant poverty everywhere.
But that said, I don't think Ben would be more welcome in say, a coal mining town (my Dad is from one) where people also work hard, have close knit communities, and have been acquainted with Jesus for several centuries now.

The question is....is Jessa allowed to do anything on her own and leave Spurge with Ben? Doubtful.
