I hate ebooks. I lose interest in them so fast. It doesn't even matter how much I'm into the book, it just get distracted to easily if it's electronic based. I have to hold an actual book to keep my interest level where it should be. Lol

I feel exactly the same way!  I have a Kindle Fire but I don't seem to use it for anything but surfing the web. I need actual paper.

@DuggarsTheEndIsNear Are you sure it's the screens, or just the urge to take a peek at FJ? :evil-laugh:

Haha well it's part that. But if I'm actually reading a paper book or writing on paper, I don't get distracted as easily. Lol

They wouldn't even have to do their own gardening to get fresh and local produce. I'm sure they could set something up with a neighbor or a local farmer. My dad had an enormous garden when I as a kid, and it produced far too much food for the four of us. By July we were swimming in peppers and peaches and tomatoes and corn, and in the fall we had buckets of apples sitting around everywhere. We were able to preserve a lot, but we always had a surplus. And we also had extra land. So if the Duggars struck up a "friendship" (let's be real, they make friends with non-fundies only when they think they can get something out of it) with someone like my dad, they could trade a few children weeding for a few hours each week, or compost, or work out some other trade. The Duggars are just lazy and stupid.

Probably one of the most accurate observations I've seen posted about this despicable family...

@multiple posters: Help me out here; haven't had cable for years, and not all that familiar with Gothardism.

So no booze, 'cause Baptist. No pig meat, but dairy and meat mixes are OK.  No info yet available on permissibility of seafood (or any fish-critter lacking gills and scales)---like anyone could afford shrimp for 20. Does ATI insist on kosher/halal slaughtered meat, and/or a ban on beef hindquarters unless the sciatic nerve is removed?

And why just the partial dietary limits? As purity-obsessed as some of the fundies seem to be, I'm frankly surprised they don't have mikvehs in regular use.

**Me soooooo confused....**

Me so confused too...    But, we may be wise to just chalk it up to the Duggars half-assing yet another thing... I can't think of anything this family does, besides breed, with any level of skill, enthusiasm or knowledge.

I don't keep Kosher, but it just seems so crazy that some of these cults imagine they are somehow following the laws of Kashrut based on an odd interpretation of Leviticus rather than a full understanding of the bigger picture and all the practices involved. Worse, most of the Christians I've met who follow this version of Kashrut don't seem to have any idea beyond some of the limited food rules, and they have certainly never heard of the Talmud or any of the other ritual practices. The aversion to research and learning displayed by so many of the people in this sub-culture just makes me want to beat my head against the wall...

The Duggars claim they do not eat pork. They have never claimed to eat Kosher or Halal.

I get why they would eat kosher, beimg wannabe jews, but halal? Those ebil muslims are even worse than catholics, even if their standards for female modesty and booze are basically the same

And if you've ever seen a Pakistani or Bangladeshi wedding, there is a whole lotta EEBIL LUSTFUL DANCING when Muslims get married. Same at Jewish weddings. Dancing like there's no tomorrow, even when the women and men are separated.

I go onto Amazon and type in free books and download as many books as I want to my iPad. If I don't like them, then I just delete them. No loss since I didn't pay for them in the first place. I can find "good" books, educational books and trashy novels (some people call it mommy porn).

Hon (sorry: spent wayyyy too much time in Baltimore, and EVERYBODY is "hon"): just Google to hook up with Project Gutenberg: thousands of public-domain books (i.e., out of copyright) online, multiple languages. Have fun glutting your eyes and overfilling the cloud.

There have been at least two different vegetable gardens plus the fruit trees, however I would bet dollars to doughnuts that if you checked right now (or in the spring)  they would not have anything edible growing.

The first garden I remember was planted for them and it was in a greenhouse.  I was quite jealous because it looked very lush.  However we theorized here on FJer that it was only a story line dreamt up by TLC and allowed to go to seed while the family toured around on their bus.

The second garden was only a couple of years ago.  It was again featured on the show.  The boys planted full sized plants on mounded dirt (sensible for irrigation/drainage purposes.)  I haven't seen any pictures lately so who knows?

By the way the fruit trees were probably just an ill-thought out pipe dream of JB's.  He probably had grandiose ideas of peaches and pears just falling into his lap.  Most amateur gardeners have no idea how much work goes in to raising fruit crops.  Trees must be watered regularly, fertilized, sprayed, and pruned and even then you may only end up with a few tiny apricots or wizened apples.  Plus the fruit that drops will attract wasps.  I finally uprooted my 10 year old nectarine tree because I was tired of all the yearly disappointments-- frozen flower buds from unseasonable weather, withered fruit from drought,  and half eaten fruit discarded by the squirrels.  My neighbor across the street does get annual plums, peaches, and apples but they are never as big and juicy as store-bought and he has to deal with passing teenagers who feel free to trespass and steal fruit all summer.

One thing that I would recommend is asparagus. It takes a few years to get going but then you will be rewarded with a lifetime of all-you-can-eat asparagus in spring. It takes very little maintenance other than weeding and mulching. Lettuce is another nearly carefree crop but it does need to be regularly re-seeded and here in the South we grow it in late fall and early spring before the heat sets in.  I grow mine in raised beds along with peas, onions, garlic, and chard.  In the summer I rotate to tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, peppers and summer squash.

I really, really wish that I could transport you to my future balcony garden in a couple of months so that you could show me how it's done! I'm terrible at green things, but that doesn't stop me from trying! My goal is to get a balcony lettuce and herbs garden going--that stuff is so expensive in the store, especially here in the big city!

Also, +1 on the fruit tree thing. Fruit trees are like the cats of trees. They basically do what they want. Example: The people who lived in my parents' house before them basically planted an orchard...in the upper Midwest. You can guess how well that turned out. Picking up all of that brown, shriveled fruit every late summer/autumn was just too much. Definitely hated that chore when I was a kid! However, the sour cherry tree was just a miracle. They never did anything to it besides pruning back every autumn, and those cherries were sublime.

Back to the books issue (and only a bit sorry about BTB postings): is any one else here scratching head and trying to figure out how in heck the writings of C.S. Lewis will corrupt youngsters/oldsters?

If they are gonna Defend the Faith, shouldn't there be some heavy-duty reading of Christian apologetics?

yes especially the ones with Jessa....the night she cooked the oven instruction booklet was epic.  She seemed like she had no idea how to cut the sweet potato either.  What do theses young Duggar girls do all day besides work on their eye make up and curl their super long hair?

In the most recent special where two of the long haired sisters and Anna comes to Jesses house to make meals for his holy hotness Ben baby mama Jessa can hardly slice veggies correctly with a huge ass knife....sad.

I don't understand how they all have beautiful hair on that diet! Must have some really good hair genes.

There's a witch in the title of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."

At least that's what my parents told me when I was seven and checked it out from the school library. My dad gave me a stern talking to that involved the words, "We don't read books about those things in this house." That was the first time that I realized that parents could be wrong. I bet the Duggars read the title and thought Witch = Bad.

On the subject of books, I always tell other people that I'm a reading addict  . I can read a book a day. Up until two years ago I was always firmly a "book of the paper kind" reader, evidenced by my thirteen bookcases chock full of books (sometimes three rows on a shelf). Then DH gifted me with an e-reader. It took some time getting used to swiping and not turning pages, but I have to admit, I have come to love that thing! I like the fact that it has it's own built in light, and I can read in the dark and I don't keep DH awake anymore when my insomnia is plaguing me. But better still, I have literally more than a thousand books with me at all times... so, yeah, when you're as addicted as I am, it's wonderful to always have your "fix" with you :pb_lol:

Wow, so many topics here. Here's my go at them:

- I am terrible at gardening, and every attempt at growing my own veg has failed miserably, even with diligent daily watering and trying to get sunlight levels right. Many props to those of you who pull it off!

- Books are lovely and it's so sad that the Duggar girls recommend fluff like "Waiting for Your Prince" or whatever it was that Jill recommended to the group of teens. I actually get through digital versions more easily because I can pick them up more easily when I'm out and about (since they sync with my phone and I often can't fit my current book in my purse). And I like that they tell me how much longer in the chapter so I can plan accordingly

- @DuggarWatch How do we know Michelle, Jill, and Jessa wear hair extensions?

- The Duggs have at least paid lip service to healthy eating reform a few times. I just rewatched the episode where Josh's trainer "surprises" him at home as he's just sat down to biscuits and gravy. The trainer reprimands him for losing all of his progress. And there's that one where JBchelle go to the Weight Watchers event.

- I have picked up on no signs that they are against fish, but I think they worry that the kids won't like it (always with the stereotypes with these ones! Even after one - was it Jordyn? - loved the Japanese fish) and that it's expensive compared to tater tots and Velveeta. There was a whole episode about Anna cooking tilapia and being surprised that her kids really liked it. Sadly, I thought it was pretty clear that she still wasn't going to be incorporating it into the regular rotation.

It's not them half assign their beliefs. Their faith teaches no pork. It may very well be rooted in the bible alone, or it could just be one of those things that Gothard decided to do because why not. Either way, the Duggars are merely following their Faith's teachings in this (and so many other) case.

Or if you want to risk it: librivox. Then you can listen to books whilst gardening/housework/... Just be cautious because some people don't read aloud fluently (like me, I just care enough about strangers and stories to not volunteer for librivox)

I go between binging on paper books, audio books and e-books. I wasn't allowed to read any books that involved magic/witchcraft/ghosts/... growing up. Let's just say I had a deal with the librarian about some issued books not being printed out or spoken about when my parents were around. As far as my parents knew I only read westerns or books published by christian publishers. I loved my librarians.

I think it's one of those internet rumors. I know a few years ago it was decided that Michelle wore a fake hair piece near her bangs. I don't know why that was decided. I think that's where the "they use hair extensions" rumor came from.

That said, it's not "ungodly" because it brings attention to their face and countenance instead of to their under clothes area. It's totally within Gothard approved behaviors and he probably prefers it cause he seems to have some kind of hair fetish.

I'm not sure I believe it about Jill though. Her hair looks unkempt and natural- I'm not criticizing her for that either. Mine frequently looks unkempt and I don't even have a baby.

There's a taller person with grey hair standing behind her and, at first, it rather looks like J'chelle is wearing this weird gray Bump-It.
