One of my old sorority sisters was on Toddlers and Tiaras.  I was flipping channels and paused on TLC because I recognized her immediately by the sound of her voice.  That was the only ep of that show I ever watched.  I was like... wow I feel better about my life choices right now.

lol. Yes, that show did make me feel better about myself! But I couldn't sit through honey boo boo.  that was just too painful.

I couldn't sit through it because they're so classless. Like I'm all for accepting yourself and your flaws, but manners are important!

I go onto Amazon and type in free books and download as many books as I want to my iPad. If I don't like them, then I just delete them. No loss since I didn't pay for them in the first place. I can find "good" books, educational books and trashy novels (some people call it mommy porn).

I will add this: my new crockpot runs much. much hotter than my older one (which I still have and use, especially at holidays and parties). It's an oval shaped model with digital timer settings. My older one is oval shaped too, but just has a basic knob and high/low/warm settings, no timer. I always felt ok about using my older one for overnight oats and the like. But not the new one. That is only used when I'm home and awake.  It managed to scorch the bottom of my mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving that I was holding on the warm setting, even with plenty of butter/half and half at the bottom to provide a buffer.

Fat transfers heat from the source to the food. So you were essentially frying the bottom of the potatoes with that butter.

I have family who (not in my immediate house) that throw their laundry on the floor. The hamper is maybe no more than 4 feet away. They step out of their clothes and that is where they stay. This is a household of adults. They have always been that way. They like you to call before coming over so they can pick up the house aka get our dirty laundry off the floor.

I was grossed out by the laundry scene. Josie picking up after JB and her brothers just put me into wretch mode. I can see having a child collect laundry. But, said laundry needs to be in a stack. hamper or something and not just strewn about. I feel JB probably does leave his dirty clothes around. After all, he is the headship of that marvelous family and has many many minions to do his bidding.

I have always had the impression that their house probably smells like dirty feet and dirty clothes. Children climbing on the counters does not bode well for a clean smelling house. I really do not see any one enforcing good hygiene.

I always think that when I see their living room furniture.  It looks clean, but it's probably covered in an invisible crust of dried baby puke, snot, feces and lice.

Someone needs to give the Duggars 2-3 big slow cookers and brief instructions on how to use them.

My husband loves to walk in and smell the slow cooker in action.

I wonder if cooking is going to be a lost art in the future.  We had lunch with a niece and her husband this week, both are teachers.  I commented to nieces husband that as his school was closer to home, was he the one getting dinner started?  My niece's response was that they would be using frozen meals like her brother and his wife.  Frozen meals were easier, no prep time and easy clean up,plus no wasted groceries.

I could have sworn I've seen at least one slow-cooker in the TTH on one or more of the episodes.

I always see these absolutely delicious recipes in my Facebook feed that use the slow-cooker.  I tried a few but they always come out looking like pig-slop and are often times way too rich.  For me however, I have found that a slow cooker is a great way to bring, heat and serve dishes for office potlucks, so at least it gets some use.

Didn't they have a crock pot lasagna recipe in their recipe section?

That CP is probably sitting next to the cats, dogs, Izzy's gliding rocker, Michelle's green blouse and all those old baby clothes and frumpers in one of their storage units.

Along with all of Jill and Derrick's wedding gifts. They are a sorry lot.

I know a lot of people complain about their husbands being unable to find the hamper.  Mine just used to leave his dirty clothes in the bathroom, because as a kid he had a hamper in there, and it just became habit.  I told him it would make me life easier if he could just toss them in the hamper. He's managed ever since. Not rocket science.  But JB is used to be served in all ways domestic and I can't imagine anyone telling him what to do around the house. I can easily picture him being the husband who just dumps his dirty clothes wherever, leaves dishes at the table, refuses to serve himself, or clean up after himself in any way.  So, basically a slob.

Slow cookers: i swear, I eat all day when the slow cooker is going because it smells SO GOOD.  Then i'm not hungry by dinner time.  The smells also make my dogs antsy all day.

Exactly. Who in that house is going to tell the holy JB to do anything? The only thing he has done in life is shoot sperm. I am sure all are trained from an early age to not cross him and to not question him and when he asks they all jump to serve him. Puke. You can probably tell where he has been all day by the trail of crap he leaves behind.

Oh god that image.  I thought I was over the morning sickness. Apparently not. ICK.   But i think you are exactly right. The children are trained to serve, especially jb, with a smile and without hesitation or question. It wouldn't even occur to them that maybe he could you know, help out once in a while. *gasp*

One of the biggest problems with the Duggars' diet is the parents (naturally, with these two). I think neither of them like fresh vegetables and are used to eating salty, grocery store canned vegetables. I bet Michelle doesn't enjoy cooking either, and Jimboob has ridiculous ideas that the womenfolk cook for the men. This is a shame because their dislikes affect the food for the much greater number of empty stomachs in the family. The choices for dinner look like a celebration of salt and processed foods. It's too bad none of the kids ever expressed an interest in learning food nutriton, cooking, and economical shopping for ingredients. Growing up, my mom wasn't a big fan of cooking but did love fresh ingredients over canned. She also liked cutting recipes from newspapers and magazines to try out on weekends. I remember when she decided to make cabbage rolls from scratch and they were delicious! I still have that recipe and make it a few of times every fall and winter because I love it. When I was a teenager, I liked picking out a recipe, buying the groceries and cooking it on a Sunday night for us to try.

See, Jimboob and Michelle, your foolish ideas about sex segregated chores has done nothing but make dinners a disposable plate of glop. Not to mention not allowing anyone in the house to read regular newspapers and magazines means no one finds an interesting recipe tucked under an article entitled "How To Know You Live In A Bizarre Cult And How To Escape".

Sorry, didn't mean to make anyone ill. I am in a naughty mood today and it just fell out of my head onto the keyboard. But, that is what he is most proud of "how many children he has" aka his studliness. He has probably requested that his penis be bronzed upon his death.

@Percy, I think there will always be young people that love cooking.  All you have to do is to watch some episodes of Top Chef to see that.  I am at the moment watching the finale of Masterchef, Junior and it so inspiring to see these kids cooking at a high level.  This is their first all-girl finale and one of these girls was cooking in pre-school!

Those kids and the knowledge they have is amazing!! I love to watch the kids cook. Most of the time I am not sure what they are talking about. Plus, they usually are cheering for each other. It isn't such a life and death contest for them as it is for the professionals. Have you ever seen a professional ask anyone if they needed help when they were done? Well, except the one who gave away his 10k to send the runner up to see her grandmother. I have seen that one three times and still cry when he does it.

This is a good example of the what the Duggars have not done. They have not "fed" any of the children's creative sides or imagination. So there is nothing there. Such a waste.

I've seen this on a different show - British Bake Off (or something like that) and they're not professionals, but it's nice to see a fairly drama-free cooking competition where you can learn different techniques that don't require super expensive ingredients or equipment.

I agree that for us, too, it took some investment to buy a good coop and supplies, but once we got the whole setup, the per- egg cost is somewhere in between free- range organic eggs and cheap, old, battery-cage supermarket eggs. I can understand that raising chickens isn' t for everybody, but for us it' s worth it for the way-healthier and better-tasting eggs, as well as the chickens' entertainment value.

this is true for us, too.  the eggs are so much better than the basic store-bought, but i haven't calculated a cost on them.  our start-up was pricey (coop was $200, needed feed/water dispensers, including heated one for winter, and fencing for the run), but food and bedding are no more expensive than dog/cat food.  also, like any pet, chickens will not stink if they're properly cared for.  just as my house doesn't smell like cat shit because they're trained and i keep the litter box clean, the back yard won't stink if the coop is cleaned regularly.  i change out the bedding at least once a week year-round, take in all food/water at night to discourage rats, rake up their run as needed, wash the inside of the coop twice a year, and make sure they have access to loose dirt so they can give themselves dust baths.  it sounds like a lot, but they're really no more work than the dog.  i've asked my nearest neighbors if the chicks stink, and the answer has consistently been no.

I will admit that I have a dirty laundry pile on my floor because my hamper is always full of clean clothes until it's time to do the laundry again. But, I also haven't had a dresser in over a year.

My girls cook one night a week each, but they cook because that is the expectation in this house not because they want too.

We have not had Junior Materchef in Australia for a long time, but you are right, there hopefully always be young people who love to took.

My fear is that with each generation we will lose some skills, I have not taught my girls to bake.  I can't bake! I am looking at learning how to pickle veggie:my_shy:
