Pretty sure the real-Michelle never apologized to her daughters for not protecting them.

I know, and that made it a bit depressing. This is probably why not-Michelle suddenly got a backbone at the end. I also noticed that the Baker girls had "soft curls," though no crunchy curls. It was probably for the best that the Bakers were generic evangelical homeschoolers, since too much backstory on Gothardism would have derailed the plot. Maybe that angle will be covered in a second episode, along with Joshley Madison.

I looked at hubby when they made the Duggar reference with my jaw on the floor.  I couldn't believe they went there! The pastor marrying the kid was WAY GROSS!  And at least the fake MEchelle cared about her daughter more than her show.

Agree that the pastor marrying the kid was gross. But the writers had to do something.

Cousin Amy watched both the CMAs and the LnO episodes, per her twitter. I know she's not exactly "in" with her Duggar cousins anymore, but she sure is against Joshley... Gonna be quite the uncomfortable family reunion someday.

I totally love Amy for the shitstirring she continues to do ALL THE TIME.

Look at SVU giving us all what we want so desperately for the Duggars in real life: Justice for the victims. Women standing up to the patriarchy. Parents actually cherishing their children. The victims being told that IT IS NOT THEIR FAULT.

And yet still having them remain true to form with them covering up for their son raping their daughters, but being completely disgusted by their pastor doing the same. *sigh* I still thoroughly enjoyed that though.

I think this kind of thing happens more often than we think. Marriage can be used to cover a multitude of sins.

Reality TV style showing Purity Ball

Cut to talking heads of girls talking about their pledges of purity.

Still from perspective of Baker's Dozen reality show
Not-JB says that girls have to make promises to dad so they don't look for attention elsewhere

Dance at purity ball
Tymber and husband are gross, husband mentions "making up for lost time" smarmily ala Josh/JB when referencing premarital purity.

Not-Michelle chastises 15 year old daughter (Summer) for not watching littlest howler.

Lane passes the fuck out and everyone freaks.  Not-Michelle rushes to her side in a most un-characteristic, only for the cameras manner.

Cut to hospital:
Carisi tells Tutuoa and Benson that Lane is 4th of 10 kids, passed out at purity ball, and is 3 months pregnant.

CREDITS

The ending now makes sense on why not-michelle chastises Summer for not watching the baby.... since it is her baby.

I loved it. Perfect mix of the brother being the perv and the pastor being the perp. And, you can definitely tell the writers wrote Faux-chelle getting a backbone in the end, as if they wished this is what the real Michelle would do in reality. The last line about how rapists don't always hunt on the streets, they hunt where they're trusted most. Perfect.

I used to watch the original Law & Order all the time; SVU not so much.   But I thought they did a good job with the subject matter, with the requisite twists and turns and false suspicions/accusations  (LOL Chris Elliot!)

And they gave us the ending we needed & deserved; so sad THAT was so different from real life!      Whoever wrote the script did a good job of watching enough 19KAC to get the flavor of the family/the show.  Kinda like how the blond pregnant detective was bingewatching the (fake) show on her laptop while on desk duty!

This was one of the best Law and Order SVU episodes I have seen in years.  Very well written.  I almost wonder if the writers didn't lurk here to get some or their material as they hit upon ALL the things we snark on.  Regardless, well done Law and Order!

Someone did their homework.  That shot of the Bakers in NYC holding hands in a circle as the camera swirls around them was EXACTLY like a shot from the first two episodes of 17 Kids and Counting.  Not to mention Det. Rollins being a stand-in for FJers calculating the fertility of fundie moms . . .

This episode exceeded my expectations. The writers did a really good job with the little details we would notice.

agree!

Agree w/ this. Loved this episode, wouldn't that be nice if the writers did luck here.

Olivia looks like she wants to pistol whip the lot of them, for the whole marriage scenario.

Watched this with my daughter (and SVU and Duggar follower).  We both loved the Olivia reaction--best WTF face from her in 17 years!

I thought of this too! That would be a hell of a twist lol

Already did that episode years ago (with a non "reality" family).

When thinking that the cameraman was responsible, I think it was a shout out to the fact that someone on the Gosselin TV crew was accused of child porn.

I agree, that shot so clearly a nod to anyone who had ever watched the Duggars. It was on the opening credits at one point too I think? Either that or I watched the Big Apple special too many times :my_confused:

I'm impressed how the episode had SO many of the elements of the Duggars while still having a twist. Some points seemed to be a precise quote ("making up for lost time", "going through puberty and too curious about girls"), dressing in matching outfits, the child porning member of the production team... a fabulous episode. i also liked how they added the child bride element - i doubt many americans realise how young kids can get married in some states with parental and/or judicial consent. Well done SVU!!!

I said to Dh that I was reminded of the Duggars, Sister Wives, the FLDS and Sarah Palin/Trig/Bristol.

I thought the episode was fantastic! However, I can't help but feel heartbroken knowing that in the Duggar family, the victims' parents didn't take any responsibility for what happened. In fact, JB and Michelle behaved as though they did everything they could, with their "safeguards" bull shit.

The writers wrote an ending scenario that we all wished had happened in real life. Waking up from the Kool-Aid and doing what's right for your children.

Ah, Fantasy Land!   If only there were a reality show where there was a big family of fundies where their older married kids became missionaries in a foreign country and one of the younger girls in the family got pregnant (but it's a secret!) and just went to 'help out' the older sibling and her spouse so that she is safely out of the picture.

Wouldn't that be FUN?!?

What an episode. I especially liked how the Baker's had all their children exactly 2 years apart. That's some good family planning, not just getting pregnant 80 days after birthing the last one. These people are too sane hahah

Ugh it is. The court papers go into more detail and is much worse

Are the court papers readily available online? I only saw newspaper articles?
