Perhaps the Bateses are secretly Juggalos:)

This may be the most awesome hypothesis ever put forward on FJ.

Charity in conservative circles can be a funny thing. A close friend

of mine is a conservative (a shade off of fundie lite) Baptist. A woman

in her Bible study has a husband w/ chronic health problems that

impact his ability to work. The wife works full time, but they are

constantly in financial crisis. Over the holidays, this Bible study took

up a collection for this family. Rather than handing it to

her privately, the group made a huge production of handing

her the money in front of the whole Bible study. I cannot

imagine how embarrassing that must have been or that no

one thought there might be a more sensitive way of helping

her...

I've been very active in volunteering and charity, and it has been my experience that the most conservative volunteers care far more about getting credit or having power over others than about actually helping people. As a teenager, I hated volunteering with my church groups and always preferred to do it on my own or with a group that wasn't explicitly religious.

I know people who also don't volunteer with religious groups for the reasons you mentioned. My cousin used to be an active volunteer in her Catholic parish groups but over time she saw the power struggles that went on and she started volunteering with Ronald McDonald House, animal shelters, and secular run soup kitchens.
