No outhouses but a line of my family came from near Bern in the early 1700s.  So your mom and I were practically neighbors give or take 300 years or so

@SassyPants My grandparents bought a lake house forty years ago or so, and it's a really cute little cottage- over a century old, no A/C, dishwasher, or microwave. It's my favorite place in the entire world. The last twenty years or so, this lake has become a kind of destination for upper/ upper middle class families in the Midwest to have a second home and they're mostly doing the same thing- the house next to ours sold in 2010 for almost $900k and they promptly tore it down and built a huge house that had to cost well over a million dollars. They're there... three weeks a year and a handful of weekends? It's truly mind-boggling.

I don't want you to dox yourself or anything, but I hope you are not talking about Lakeside, Ohio!

Nope, it's in Indiana! There are plenty of lakes here so I'm not too worried about giving away the state

Also edited to add that I'm sure this is a problem on a lot of waterfront property, of course not just the lake I happen to be familiar with. It's so sad to me that people have these homes and either can't be bothered to use them or maybe overextend themselves with rebuilds and renovations that they can't afford to take the time off to enjoy them.

I know someone who bought a house for over a million dollars and promptly knocked it down to build a custom house. Less than a year after it was finished, the wife found out the husband was cheating so they knocked down the new house and built another so there'd be no bad memories. I wish I had that kind of money. I'd rescue a ton of dogs and feed and clothe impoverished children instead of knocking down perfectly fine homes.

there is no reason why your outhouse can't have a marble threshold.

All I could think was that the house looked very 'them'. Nice little pastor with his nice little pastor's wife and their nice little daughter in their nice little home.

I do wonder what they will do when they move to California. I just can't see how it's affordable for them to live out there. I'm barely managing in what I assume is a lower cost of living area, and I don't have a baby to support. However, they must have thought it through because there's no way someone like Jeremy would allow this to be broadcast to the world if he wasn't certain they had some kind of support in place. He seems too self-centered for that, surely? Or maybe the better term would be image-conscious.

I'm jealous they managed to buy at all. Stay-at-home mom, small-town pastor dad, infant child... my rent alone is 50% of my take home pay (£695 a month/$905) and the new houses being built on my estate start at £415,000 ($540,000) for 3 bedrooms. Makes me jealous for 20 somethings who can afford not only a kid but a kid and their own home.

These Duggars really do live outside the real world though. Wonder what will happen if it ever comes crashing down.

Check my mood emoji - that’s the reason right there ?

fwiw I once lived in a less than fancy house that happened to have a marble floor in one of the bathrooms and let me tell you from experience that when it was wet without a bath mat it was as dangerous as stepping into a sheet of ice barefoot and naked.

I don't see any mention of housing on The Master's Seminary website.  Although The Master's University actually has dorms.

Although Jinger can join the Seminary Wives Club and hang with a bunch of pants wearing hussies: https://www.tms.edu/students/seminary-wives/

I recently redid my house's floors with decorative cork tile and poured concrete.  Damn those flooring contractors!  They just made concrete and cork thresholds for my house, and never tipped me off that strips of marble was what turns a hovel into a mansion.

My own seven figure house is likely to be demolished because of my threshold finishes... :crying-yellow:

Shell probably join and post staged insta photos about it. It would fit the image they're going for perfectly

for some reason my parents have three places to sometime cohabit in

it drives my mom nuts. - She says every Monday she wonders which one my dad will decide to visit.

one is the the main 2 bedroom suite they live in the city, one is a one bedroom in whistler which they rent out, and one is a 2 bedroom 1100 square foot cottage on the island

@Cat Damon,  recently I saw an episode of Rehab Addict where Nicole Curtis was tackling the renovation of the oldest house in Lake Orion, Michigan, NIcole's hometown.  She's already restored her grandparents' ranch house in Lake Orion and wanted to preserve this old home as she was bothered by some many summer people tearing down these wonderful old homes  just to have some new.    Nicole did a fabulous job on the restoration and the modest house is beautiful!

I got a call from an agent for Keller-Williams this afternoon to see if we wanted to sell our house.  Nope. We don't.  Not in 10 years.  Not ever.  Now that the kids are grown and have left home, it's all the house we need.

Re Jeremy doing the FSBO (For Sale By Owner) thing: I think it makes sense for them to do that... they have complete control over who enters and looks at their house and when; he can be in each room with them, never leaving them in a room alone (to take pics, steal something, plant a recording device or whatever some stalky no-gooder can think of) and he can either drop the price accordingly or take his cut of what would be the owners' realtor percent. We did that once and we knew nothing; Jeremy has relatives with real estate licenses -- although whether or not he would accept their help/advice is another thing.

If the quick contract makes it through to a sale, then he did a good job.

FSBO makes sense IF you already have a buyer (I’m thinking the next Preacher for their 6 person church). Otherwise, it makes selling a home difficult, at least in my area, because FSBO homes are not placed on the MLS, and therefore have limited exposure to potential buyers. The Vuolos  might also have an arrangement with their mother church, in terms of the church picking up the home if it does not sell within a certain amount of time (doubtful).

FSBO houses also attract house flippers who pay cash.  The homeowner might get a quick sale, but they usually don't get as much money out of the sale as they would if they'd sold the house conventionally.

For shits and grins I went to the TMS website and the "find a church" tab. Some TMS graduate decided that we heathens here in LV needed to "know the gospel" and started a church in 2012. Don't they know we have more churches here in "sin city" than you can shake a stick at? We REALLY don't need another church.

Sorry, it just chaps my ass that all these damn people think us denizens of LV are a bunch of heathens. Hell, there's people who think that living in LV means you live in a hotel, spend your time in the casino and fuck on the strip. The strip is ONE place where you can't fuck in public, metro will arrest you for that.

We've been here almost 5 years and I'm still stunned at the misconceptions people have...

ETA: My only mild critique of their listing is that they have some personal photos visible in some photos. That’s 100% just my weird thing though and it likely didn’t hurt them if they have a buyer already. For us, we’re making sure no personal photos, artwork, or anything with our names is visible once we list our place for sale though. We don’t want photos of our daughter bouncing around the Internet and it helps people envision living in the home more easily without other people’s faces staring at them. JinJer may not have had anywhere to store that stuff though, so that might be why they didn’t take it down.

It is not just your "weird thing". When I was moving from my last apartment (super tiny place). I had no storage to take down all our photos or identifying things so I taped sheets of paper over things to cover it up (and yes, I really really did not like my landlord ;) or her realtor). It was a good thing I did because that listing stayed up forever. The realtor was just awful too. Every time he would bring people by to look at the apartment he always had some comment on how many things we had or that we "crammed it all in, but of course the place is really spacious" while I was standing there. It was a one bedroom that I was sharing with middle school aged son, so my bedroom was in the living room. I was actually very proud of the set up so I just rolled my eyes, I was happy to just be getting out that place.

The Vuolo's are on a reality TV show on a fairly regular basis (as is their home). They had the birth of their daughter filmed. The majority of Jinger's childhood she had camera's around her that would tape it.

I doubt covering wedding pics to protect their privacy is on their minds when their wedding has been broadcast around the world.

Of course there'd still be things they might not want people to see, but I find it a bit silly to comment on their not covering pics for real estate pictures when we can see them on TV all the time.

Except no one said that? I pointed out that privacy was a personal concern of mine while we’ve been prepping our house to sell, not that it was a concern of the Vuolos. I mentioned it when discussing the Vuolos specifically because a lot of buyers don’t like seeing personal items while viewing homes they’re interested in. That’s why I ended that portion by stating the personal items likely didn’t hurt them since they already have a buyer.

ETA: Of course I have spotty service right now! I can see why you got that impression from my post, but that wasn’t what I meant. :)

i wish my parents felt this way. They have moved 26 times in the 50 years they have been married. That doesn't include vacation homes. The longest they lived anywhere was 13 years (and that was a year after I had moved out)

I loved perhaps 4 of the houses they lived in.  Thank god the current one is one of them.

So I applaud you !

My in-laws summer cottage has an outhouse. They have since added indoor plumbing but otherwise this place is rustic. Then you look next door at the newly remodeled, huge, shiny new cottage the neighbors have

Hey at least they stuck around. We have a shocking number of half finished, upscale homes here because people start building and then get divorced and the house just sits half done before they ultimately try and sell it.

Oh, I'm on the same page. I totally got what you meant. *I* wouldn't want the world to see my private life on real estate pages either. I'd take pictures after removing all my personal stuff. I'd also totally understand if the thought didn't even cross the Vuolos minds, though. They sell their private life on a TV show so the pics on the real estate website are nothing compared to that, I guess?! I mean, the pics look like they still live there but like they prepped their home accordingly. There might be even more to see on the actual show. The freakiest thing to see in the real estate pictures is taxidermy, anyway. (I used pictures as an example for private stuff, as I saw a larger wedding pic hanging in one of the rooms IIRC, and while I'd never want people browsing for real estate to see my wedding pics, it's probably not that big a concern if your wedding pics have been on the cover page of People magazine, and the same goes for other private areas/items of the home.)

The tricky thing, I guess, is that they still live there for quite a bit more time. I would understand if they didn't want to remove the homey feel just yet and decided to just tidy up and take pics and see what kind of people would be interested.

That’s true. And yeah, I definitely get not wanting to sacrifice having your home feel like home when trying to sell. It can be a pretty tough balance to strike sometimes. I do think they did a decent job overall though and it looks like they’ve done a nice job taking care of their home. There weren’t many personal items visible and what actually was visible were previously printed in magazines or posted to social media anyways. I can see why it wouldn’t bother them to keep that stuff hanging up for the listing photos.

(And I apologize if I sounded snippy or wasn’t clear enough in my earlier posts. I have not been my usual self when posting the last few weeks. I’m finding it a bit harder than normal to word things properly on a consistent basis. Here’s hoping that’s just a temporary thing. Lol!)
