I'm working my butt off on this scarf that's entirely out of my comfort zone, but I hate it so much. The extra decorative cable panel is NOT working for me. It's fussy and doesn't match. :(

It looks Scottish to me.  I bought a cable knit sweater that color for my mom when I was there as a kid.

i think it’s pretty.

Did you post that when Obama was president or are you just a whiny, weasly little hypocrite?

And what, precisely, does it have to do with the family whose deaths we were discussing, the ways the foster/adopt system failed these kids, and the way that this couple does not represent the many LGTBQ+ people who are wonderful adoptive parents?

I know that we love thread drift on FJ, but when does it cross the line into deliberate thread derailing? We have a whole forum dedicated to discussing politics!

Nope, I respected President Obama for the position he held even if he was a [redacted].

But you libs cannot respect anyone. Your meltdowns are hilarious to watch!

I tend to be a bit plainer in my tastes. I think that's why I hate it. It's just too much for me. That said, it's all for practise and I'm never actually gonna wear it so it doesn't matter. I'd ship it off to you @HerNameIsBuffy if I didn't know you were allergic to it.

I think Aran style sweaters are more Irish than Scottish. I was thinking about making an Aran style afghan, but I would definitely go for an acrylic yarn, not a wool one, like traditional Aran sweaters. And, I agree; it looks beautiful, @Destiny!

Thanks. I probably would have gone acrylic had it been up to me, but this is part of one of the Knit Pick's beginner's boxes. They send the yarn and the notions and the pattern. I'd never done anything more complicated than knit, perl, and yarn over before.

What are notions in this context?

So are you cheating on our garden with this Knit Pick?

I assume it would just be a cable needle in this case?

In this particular case, it was needles, both straight and circular, and a set of cable needles. This was my first box so I'm not sure what else might come in other boxes.

I cancelled next month's box, because I'm still barely into pattern one of the three they sent.

I would never. It's snow time! We will start our garden planning in March or April.

I like the word notions - it’s quaint.  Also “sundries.”

i wokred with someone once who was upset because ber boss scolded her.  I’d never heard anyone use that word verbally ...just from older books.

If you go to a craft store with sewing stuff, like JoAnn Fabric, all the sewing needles, bobbins, measuring tapes, etc. are called "sewing notions". They'll even have coupons that are only good on sewing notions or "the notions wall". The knitting notions section is a bit smaller: needles, cable needles, stitch holders, row counters, point protectors, and so on.

I've never heard of Knit Pick, @Destiny. How expensive is it?

The box I'm getting is 50ish dollars a month. It's designed for beginners. I know it's pricey, but I figured a) it's going to force me to learn, and b) there's practically zero chance of me needing a box every month, and c) it's really good quality yarn. They pick a skill every month and send out patterns with pictures of how to do the stuff to help beginners move on.

One of the ones I haven't started yet is knitting in the round and I have no bloody clue how the heck that's accomplished. I'll be YouTubing that lol.

Yarn over.... in knitting? Sorry, I'm just learning to knit, after 10+ years of crochet, so I can't figure out YO in this context. I can cast on, knit, purl and do a cast off with some very wonky tension issues.

It's basically you just make another loop with your working yarn to add stitches. @WhatWouldJohnCrichtonDo? is an actual knitter and might have better ways to explain it.

Simplest version: in a yarn over, you switch the yarn to the purl side, but then still make a knit stitch. (There are other ways to do it if you're purling or switching from knit to purl or vice versa.) It increases the stitches by one and leaves a decorative hole.

I don't know that I'm any more actual than you, D. :pb_redface: I don't try out new techniques very often, so you'll knit circles around me in 2 seconds if you keep expanding your repertoire. :my_heart:

I have to go get my kids in a minute, so I'm gonna miss all the fun knitting talk until later, or maybe tomorrow. Y'all be good, or at least have fun!

Okay Folks and Trolls,

@Destiny The scarf is lovely.  I have done cable knitting before in a past life, before I rediscovered sewing, and it is quite tricky.  I love Aran sweaters.  I have the cutest pic of the mini Pooks in matching ones from when they were little.  PM me if you want to see and I will find the pic.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a nail polish color to off-set a cable knit scarf like the one Destiny is making or an Aran sweater.

Sis Pook, (MDD, GAD, seasonal allergies, Libtard, and now with hypertension)

@WhatWouldJohnCrichtonDo? you need to come and visit Ireland. Guinness, tea , cable knit. You are one of us!

Aran jumpers are traditionally from the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway. Lovely area. Still a lot of Irish spoken there.

There's very similar styles around Ireland and Scotland though.

Your work looks really lovely @Destiny but sorry it's no fun to make. Impressive perseverance.
