I'm up North too and we have both the Shawn and Shan pronunciations in the family. I've also heard it as a Shane pronunciation. These days there are so many anglicised versions of Irish names and an equal amount of seemingly Irish spellings of more traditionally non-Irish names, I think it's just a case of anything goes.

Since my sister also follows the Duggars and fundies (on a different forum), and she will be visiting me (new house!) this weekend, I'm betting M5 will be born after she leaves so we won't have our time to discuss it in person.
