Why is the memory of Lorena Bobbit chopping off her husband's penis not burned into anyone's memory?  (For those of you who don't know this story, don't worry, the doctors surgically reattached it :cracking-up:)

And he became a porn star......:omg:

I have some comments.

How did this thread grow so quickly without me noticing?

@Destiny, 'twas @VelociRapturewho tried to get this thread back on topic.

I am incredulous that I remember EVERYTHING EVERYONE HAS MENTIONED.

Why is the memory of Lorena Bobbit chopping off her husband's penis not burned into anyone's memory?  (For those of you who don't know this story, don't worry, the doctors surgically reattached it :cracking-up:)

I guess that's it for now. Lost my train of thought.

... no I didn't...

...

...

... seriously... I didn't...

...

...

... why won't anyone believe me?

...

...

... that one little comment doesn't count... I immediately jumped back into the thread drift... which is the topic that actually matters here because no one loves Dillard's...

...

... please love me again? :pb_lol:

Well, of course, it's not up to me.  And I suspect it's not me you're asking. We will just have to wait and see.  Naughty Raptor.

According to Wikipedia, Catholicism is the earliest form of Christianity.

Learn something new everyday, I guess. (Luckily for me, I'm a lapsed Catholic or this would be embarrassing).

Sorry, Nora C Conley!

My dear, according to John Shrader Wikipedia has it all wrong. Historic Biblical Baptists were the first (and only) Christians.  All Catholics are heathens be they  Roman, Orthodox or Coptic

There was a huge debate on Catholic Answers a while ago about the earliest Christian church.  I wish I could find it again because it demonstrated that our Protestant extreme Fundamentalists aren't alone in sheer nuttiness.

And where is our Gnostic Christian Bishop when we need him. ;)

Well, it's nice that people are figuring out that the Dillard's are scamming them.

I am so glad you posted these screen shots! Thank you @Carm_88

I'm so glad people are starting to see through the Duggar facade

Ok, now I feel old. First very vague news memory was the moon landing in '69. I'd just turned 4. Next one was the birth of Sasha Trudeau, current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's younger brother, born on Christmas Day in 1973 to then-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

Justin Trudeau has a brother my age? How did I not know this?!!

There were three Trudeau brothers, Justin (1971), Alexandre "Sasha" (1973) and Michel (1975-98?).

@Palimpsest, thank you for mentioning the Coptic Church!  That's the one I was trying to think of.  I knew there were some ancient churches in some countries that are now predominately Muslim, but I couldn't think of the Coptic Church, just the Syriac.  My folks went to several traditional sites from the early years of Chistendom when they visited Egypt.

Speaking of weird proselytizing...just encountered a nearly 5 minute ad on YouTube about the importance of Judeo-Christian values in society. The man argues that if there aren't Judeo-Christian values, there isn't objective. Even more strange is that he admits there are moral non-Christians and immoral God-believing people...he then says the existence of these people have nothing to do with the question of morality.

Then he tries to scare me with moral relativism by saying without God the phrase "murder is evil" is the same as "I don't like murder". And that without God evidence that murder is wrong doesn't exist. He throws in some Hitler and Stalin for good measure.

He also talks about how Western Judeo-Christian societies - read white imperial powers - are successful because they were first to abolish slavery and liberate women etc. (wrong: see Haiti)

We're living in weird populist times y'all. I can only imagine what political ads will look like in a few years with Cinnamon Hitler in-charge.

Dammit @VelociRapture, FJ had ONE JOB and you BLEW IT! LOLOLOL!

I'm not going to lie, it amuses the CRAP out of me that this thread went PAGES without actually talking about the Dillards. I've been giggling like a 12yo boy who heard a penis joke since this thread started.

This is totally burned into my memory. I mentioned it to Mr. Puma the other night while I was washing my chef's knife.

That said, I've been googling news stories from the early/mid 80s and turns out the Challenger disaster isn't my earliest memory. This is. I remember vividly. I was 4 years old, playing with my Care Bears in the living room of our house in Texas and this came on the news. I asked if she was ok and was told she was not. 219d3341d852300fed2667f76a1174fb.jpg

Sounds about as odd as the video I watched where a man (who claimed to be a professor!) was arguing that the Earth was flat. I swear he was not joking, but I also couldn't stand to watch the whole thing.

ETA: Only after posting do I see it's being talked about in Quiver Full of Snark :P

I remember "participating" in (well, being allowed to put mommy's voting card in the box) choosing the first female president, Tarja Halonen, for our country. It was in 2000 and I was 6 years old. She was our president for 12 years (i.e. two therms), so I practically grew up with her in power. The Finnish president's role is mostly ceremonial but I still love that we had her. She was awesome!

And then 9/11. I remember seeing pictures of the guilty ones in the tabloids, and I was so surprised that they looked like regular people. Idk what I'd expected, devil's horns?, but it made me realize that bad guys can look just like good guys. But they were just...human.

Also I didn't understand why people were so surprised over 9/11, because bombnings happened in other countries all the time, I'd seen it on the news all my (short) life, I reasoned. I knew nothing about the US back then, as you can see. It was just as foreign to me as everything outside of Europe!

I think the biggest red flag for me was that the Dillards do not meet the criteria to be missionaries with their own church.

They are religious hippies with wanderlust and no motivation to work for a living.

... Has anyone mentioned John Bobbitt's porn career with his snippy-snipped sausage? I have no idea where this conversation is going but I like to be involved.

Or how perfect last name his last name was, considering.

Lorena went to work in a nail salon after leaving him. I was having dinner with a bunch of friends (mostly male) and pointed out that her salon was next to the restaurant where we were eating. Two of the guys tried to leave immediately, they were so wigged out.

You'd have to be a trusting soul to let that woman anywhere near you with scissors or a nail file.  Just sayin'

I remember watching the Berlin Wall come down. I remember my mom making a big deal about it and I didn't really care.

I also remember the Gulf War fairly well. There was a kid who live don my street that I occasionally played with and was also in my class whose dad was deployed to Iraq. We could not talk about it in class withotu him crying. It helped make it real to me and understand that  horrors of war. His dad came home safe from that deployment.

I remember both 1992 Olympics. I was so excited to see Kristi Yamaguchi win gold and I was obsessed with gymnastics during the summer Olympics. I became a huge fan of Shannon Miller.
