Are You Raising Communists?

My dad is convinced I'm becoming a communist, especially since I have to read the Communist Manifesto for one of my classes.

I hear it's boring as fuck.

I didn't think so, but then I wouldn't. ;)

It is, however, extremely short so if you do find yourself in imminent danger of dying of boredom, you will still have only a few pages to go. And thank any deities around (or not) they didn't make you read Capital...

Even if you are against Communism as an economic/governmental structure, the radical goals of the party were mainly stuff-that-needed-to-happen. Marx gets a bad name, but he was right about most things. The execution of Communism sucked ass, and I am not sure if that economic system simply lends itself to totalitarianism or if it was that place/time.

I am teaching my children to share, not to take advantages that they have not earned (that is, don't cheat or steal), and that all people have certain rights. I want them to work hard and achieve, but to do so in a way that is mindful of others. I want them to be comfortable but also to give generously and even to the point of discomfort when necessary. To some people, that would make me a Communist. But I think the communists on this board would disagree. I believe that a modified system that has elements of capitalism and socialism is probably the best plan. The truth lies between the extremes (and also between the first and the fortieth drink).

Makes you a great mum, not an automatic commie ;) That said, I remember - was it Kelly@GC? - saying it was wrong to teach kids to share for that very reason...

Another parent of socialists here. And correct me if I'm wrong, but in order to be a real communist don't you have to advocate for violent overthrow of the government? So how is sneaky infiltration by being tolerant of nontraditional lifestyles and careful of the Earth exactly going to set up a Politburo in Washington?

However, no liberals I know would say anything if their children were heterosexual, decided to save their virginity for marriage, daughter chose to be a SAHM instead of having a career, etc.

Well... I might say something about the SAHM part, at least to the extent of insuring that she has job skills and her husband has insurance - not, you know, demand she be back at work 3 weeks after having the kid and dropping her down a chute to daycare.

I'm teaching my daughter to be a feminist. There's probably a definite tinge of socialism to it, because I believe we should have things like universal maternity care, universal health care for children at least, and all that good stuff. It takes more than the infamous BOOTSTRAPS to get through this world. I don't want her to be afraid to work for what she has and to ask for what she needs, but I don't want her to think she has to stomp on people either.

Plus, I'm in the Army, so I'm being one of those bad-for-fundies role models every day...

What does environmentalism have to do with anything? Doesn't God command the Believeroonies to be good stewards of the earth?
In the sense of taking dominion, yes. God made all the plants and the animals for humans to use, so the idea that people shouldn't use animals for whatever they wish is a problem. Nature exists for humans to use, humans are not a part of nature.

Add to that a sense that environmentalism means "worshipping the creation rather than the Creator" or worse yet some fuzzy ideas about how environmentalism involves worshipping a "mother earth" as a goddess, and it becomes problematic for some fundies.

On top of all that is the idea that if the world is going to end, only God will make it happen - God made the flood to punish people, and he can end the world again to punish people, but it's purely up to him, nothing in any human control EXCEPT for the idea that by not sinning you reduce the chances of it happening.

But basically, it's silly liberals trusting in man (at best) or some false earth god (at worst) instead of God.

I see caring for the planet as a religious mandate. Not only should I *not* trash things just for the hell of it, I have to be considerate and socially conscious. If it gets a bit hotter, I have to use AC more and half of Southeast Asia lose their farms. If I buy a $4 t-shirt at Target instead of Goodwill, I am taking part in a system based on slavery. In some ways I must be a fundie, because I see a lot of morality issues around me that other people seem to ignore.

I don't know if there is a Judgment Day, but I bet that shit will come up if there is.

Apparently, I am also.

Hmmm....I guess I am too!

Funny aside: My female friends in college and I used to call our menses "The Communists", AKA the Red Menace. Getting PMS was "getting propaganda". When I read the subject, my mind went there, and I thought, no, I kicked them out last week. Won't be raising 'em again for another 25 days or so!

It won't ;) But it will make you a caring human, i.e not a fundie.

Advocating for violent overthrow of the gov't isn't actually a condition of being a communist. This gets complex but it is not something that is generally dwelt on. We accept that it is not particularly likely that the ruling class are going to say "Oh alright, we give in, here are the means of production" and sit down and STFU. But if someone said they were a pacifist and a communist, that's still compatible. They are a different type of communist from me but given certain principles they still are one.

According to young man who runs Future Fathers, feminism leads to communism.

You might as well start reading Marx to your daughters as a bedtime story. :snooty:

Snicker.....my "little" feminists are 24, 20, 18 and 18. My oldest graduated from the godless evil state university that JimBob won't allow his kids to attend. She grew up to be a social worker The middle child is currently being indoctrinated at the same university. My last best hope is for the twins. However, the are a little past the bed time story stage.

Joking aside, where do these people come up with this stuff?

Hmm, I hope to raise future socialist when I eventually have/adopt children. I figure I will have to limit contact with parts of my family to do this when they are young, as I wouldn't want anyone turning out like that part of the family.
