The Pepsi Connection

I think that she should be able to have a Pepsi whenever she wants as her payment for keeping Steve from looking at porn.

Nell

I'd let her have the Pepsi just for letting Steve live.

Mrs Maxwell loves Pepsi. She wrote in a Corner some years ago how she had loved it so much, that she decided she had to give it up, because it was becoming an "idol." Pure Maxwell.

But the icing on the cake is, the way she writes about it, it reads as if surely the Pepsi is only a stand-in for some harder substance like cocaine or at least alcohol, for all the angst she has about it. If it were a secular piece, surely it would be, and so you get to the end waiting for the big reveal, and NO, seriously, it's just about Pepsi. Regular, non-spiked, fresh from the can, pop.

...and it just adds to the "WTF?"ery.

I know, right? The way they talk about it, you'd think that Teri was snorting lines of Pepsi off a toilet seat in a dingy truck stop stall.

In my limited experience people with depression are more likely to self medicate with alcohol than with caffeine sodas. This is seen in bipolar disease, and also in schizophrenia. I have a friend whose brother started hearing voices in his head at age 14 so he turned to alcohol to make the voices go away. Sometimes it becomes really difficult to sort out which came first, mental illness or alcohol abuse. But I can see Pepsi or Coke being used that way too.

I can see sodas being used in that way, especially if someone believes that alcohol is a major sin even in moderation.

You got me laughing...

As far as this "no Pepsi" thing--it's called "Let make everyone's life as miserable as possible". And it's not a religious thing either cuz I'm Catholic and I have a ton of fun at church parties (where I drink a lot of Pepsi).

I wonder if Steve plans to move on to Sarah and her burritos.

I see it coming. On December 31, 2011, I had my last burrito. Then Daddy and I spent the whole night praying about it. Daddy told me I had made the right decision in God's eyes! I am so grateful to my wonderful Father for freeing me from burrito bondage!

LOL, you've got the Maxwells down pat. I actually had to reread your post to make sure you were snarking, and not quoting an actual recent blog. Ugh!!!

FREESARAH!!!!

It occurs to me while reading this thread that many of the folks who are entrenched in these legalistic, ritualistic religious movements are feeding addictive personality traits with their whole lifestyle. The whole lifestyle is an endless quest to block out reality and fill it with their drug(s) of choice. They do not wish to be in the real world, but to be slaves to the world created for them by cherry-picked interpretation of scripture. They are zombies. Many of the man are addicted to power, to pornography, to being coddled and pampered. The women become addicted to pregnancy, obssessive cleaning, picture taking, frugality to the point of pain. The woman also seem to favor appearing drugged when they are not with the big doe eyes, the baby soft voices and pasted on smiles.

The whole lot of them are on a head trip with religion. I don't have the time or inclination to look them up at the moment, but I have read studies that have shown brain activity during religious experiences that looks just like brain activity on drugs. There is even a Canadian researcher who found the spot on the brain that make a person feel like they have seen god.
