Can someone explain to this Coca Cola newcomer what the references to Pepsi mean? I think I see it only in Maxwell threads.

Teri used to LOVE to drink Pepsi. She/and or Steve thought she was starting to make an idol of it, that the pepsi was becoming more important to her than Jesus. No lie.

Teri Maxwell used to drink Pepsi, but she enjoyed it too much. Steve, I am sure, determined it was becoming an idol, so no more Pepsi for Teri.

ETA Skankbiscuit beat me to it.

Mrs Maxwell loves Pepsi. She wrote in a Corner some years ago how she had loved it so much, that she decided she had to give it up, because it was becoming an "idol." Pure Maxwell.

But the icing on the cake is, the way she writes about it, it reads as if surely the Pepsi is only a stand-in for some harder substance like cocaine or at least alcohol, for all the angst she has about it. If it were a secular piece, surely it would be, and so you get to the end waiting for the big reveal, and NO, seriously, it's just about Pepsi. Regular, non-spiked, fresh from the can, pop.

...and it just adds to the "WTF?"ery.

You can find the whole depressing story in their corners.

Holy Mother of God! :o Unbelievable. I'm not giving up Coca Cola for anyone, not even for Lent. I don't smoke, don't drink alcohol but by God I will drink my Coke. Maybe I'll send Teri a case of Pepsi. Why doesn't she just leave that loser?

I know, in our dreams.

Have you ever seen Judge Judy do the LOSER symbol on her show? It's hysterical when she does it. Her 13 y.o. grand daughter Sarah taught it to her. That's what I want to do to Steve if I ever see him.

In the pictures from the Colorado trip, there were cans of pepsi on the table in the cabin, so they drink it in front of poor Teri.

Wow. She wrote: On December 31, 2006, I drank my last Pepsi. It was a miserable two days as I suffered through the caffeine withdrawal, but I kept crying out to Him for His grace and strength. The joy I have experienced this past year and a half since being freed me from my bondage is completely worth the discomfort of the withdrawal." My question is why doesn't she look joyful?

I freely admit I'm in bondage to Coca Cola and will be til the day I die. Now Pepsi, no way. And yes, I can tell the difference.

I kind of wonder if Terri's Pepsi addiction was due to her depression. I have heard of people with depression sometimes using caffeine as temporary anti-depressants.

Hey, that's a really interesting thought. When I was going through round three of PPD, I drank case loads of diet coke - I actually freaked my husband out, I think he thought I was going to pickle myself with the stuff. Now that I'm doing better, I still like my diet coke, but I don't drink near the same amount.

Was Terri the one with PPD, or another form of depression?

I can't remember exactly what it was with Terri. When I was in college, I took a nutrition class and the nutritionist who taught the class said that often psychiatrists and other types of doctors sometimes told her about some of their patients drinking caffeine quite a bit during depressive episodes.

Wow...I just read that mom's corner. Maybe Steve let Terri have a Pepsi or two on the "Not a Vacation" because she'd be on good behavior or something..... I think Terri's religious addiction is ruining her relationship with God...not a can of Pepsi.

I'm in bondage to Coca Cola too, NurseNell. I especially love a nice cold icy Route 44 coke from my local Sonic Drive in... a couple of times a day some days.. :-)

Her depression was chronic (8 years) and seemed to worsen when she had another baby. That's why Steve got snipped in the 1st place...

In my limited experience people with depression are more likely to self medicate with alcohol than with caffeine sodas. This is seen in bipolar disease, and also in schizophrenia. I have a friend whose brother started hearing voices in his head at age 14 so he turned to alcohol to make the voices go away. Sometimes it becomes really difficult to sort out which came first, mental illness or alcohol abuse. But I can see Pepsi or Coke being used that way too.

It sounds like it was the only outlet she had...too bad she felt like she needed to give it up. She could have cut down to 1 or 2 a day...

I agree. It's ridiculous. She deserves a little fun in her life, even if it's just a Pepsi or two a day. I'm a non-drinker of alcohol but if I had a husband like Steve I'd be drinking something stronger than Pepsi or Coke!

I find the Maxwell's very scary and I hope no one ever goes over the edge.

Holy shit! I knew about the Pepsi thing, but hadn't read this bit before. She sounds like an alcoholic....except, she's talking about Pepsi. Pepsi COLA!!! LOL!

I bet it was because she loved pepsi more then Her god her husband.

There is no way I would give up my once a day drink of Coke. They'll have to prise my coca cola from my cold, dead, hands.

Ain't that the truth?!! And as far as I can tell it was only ONE pepsi per day, right? Bondage? To one pepsi a day?

This woman needs a life, desperately.

ETA: No I re-read it and I take it back. Sometimes she'd have a pepsi morning and afternoon. And sometimes she'd sip some from a two liter bottle ALL DAY LONG!!! Send that woman to the Betty Ford Center, right away!

But it's the way she talks about it. I don't know. I wrote a thing on the old board where I replaced the word pepsi with martini in her post and it definitely seems like she has some addictive tendencies. Check it:

And just rereading... I don't know. I hesitate to armchair-diagnose someone, but the way she sounds so, I don't know...needy? And loving? And ultimately ashamed? When she talks about Pepsi? It makes me wonder a little if she might have some addictive tendencies. Some quotes. I'm going to substitute the word martini for Pepsi and let me know if you can see what I'm getting at.

It's just, obviously there's nothing wrong with drinking Pepsi. She should have as much as she wants, provided it doesn't make her unhealthy/hurt her teeth/etc. But the way she talks about it! After she decided she didn't want to drink it anymore, it was like she was powerless over the Pepsi. The shame and bargaining and "This will be my last one. No, this one. No, this one. Okay, I'll quit tomorrow. No, the next week. No, the next week," really kind of pinged something for me. And then, to quit, she needed to acknowledge that a higher power could help her and turn her Pepsi cravings over to him, and...well, you know the rest.

Honestly, the only thing she was missing was making amends to all the people she'd hurt because of Pepsi.

She could have switched to decaf-Pepsi... :?

I think that she should be able to have a Pepsi whenever she wants as her payment for keeping Steve from looking at porn.
