I honestly think that a large portion of encouraging these people to evangelize or what have you is because then it becomes more difficult to back out. The more they spread around their beliefs, the more people will know about it and will potententially question them if they leave. Think about any choice you made as a teenager/early20's that people voiced their concern over: a bad boyfriend, an iffy college major or job, car loan, whatever. I can guarantee most of us stuck with those things longer than we should have to avoid having to say just to our immediate family or friends "you were right, that maybe wasn't the best choice to make". im uncomfortable if people comment on me being dressed up going about my day"oh this is different for you!" I can only imagine how it would be to go from pants to denim skirts and back.

That's what I don't understand about their courting. They say "they've set their own boundaries and are holding themselves accountable" but then they can't freaking hug because it may "lead to something". A) you aren't holding yourself accountable or setting your own boundaries when you have to plop a 10 year old between you when you sit in a car. and I've hugged plenty of people I was attracted to, while still somehow managing to not strip naked and mount them right then and there. Hell, I've even done it while (really really) drunk. Yet these people, who have Jesus on their side, or whatever, can't seem to manage that, hand holding, kissing, or even sitting next to one another without losing all control? Sounds like they're doing something wrong

Yeah, I've never understood the logic. If you think that a hug or holding hands will lead to sex, the problem isn't the hug or the clasped hands, it's YOU. Because YOU assign sexual meanings to things that really are not sexual at all.

I think this might help the modesty issues.

Even when they are sexual I (and I assume others) can partake without losing all control. Say you go on a first date with someone, really hit it off, great chemistry but you have no intention of sleeping with them right off the bat (maybe you have homework due, have plans for the morning, or its just not your style) most normal people can give that person a hug and kiss at the end of the night and still keep their virtue intact, as it were. These people act like that's simply not possible, that if you're attracted to someone you'd better marry them RIGHT NOW but keep your distance until you manage that because genitals are like magnets and if they get to close you get snapped together and stuck

This especially! But again this goes back to how fundies don't teach the concept of self-control because guys can't control their urges and woman must make sure they don't egg on any guy to have said urges. Basically everyone annoys me about fundies, but this issue especially on self-control bothers me the most!

Genitals are like magnets HAHAHA I'm going to have to remember that one.

Also, it's completely and utterly possible to be super attracted to someone without leg humping them the very second you see them. I met Michael Fassbender and didn't get arrested. So I know first hand it's completely possible! These people don't know what self control is at all. Which is kinda ironic imo.

I always thought their reasoning made men sound like idiots. As if they have no brains or moral compass. As if they see a shoulder in the grocery store they want to rip off their clothes and have sex. I, personally don't want to be associated with anyone that has such lack of control. I, at one point even asked my husband was it that hard to have control over himself. He said, "No, I was raised better. "  Animals act better than the way they lead you to believe a man can act.

Genitals are like magnets is AWESOME!!!! I almost snorted my coke on the computer.

Slightly off topic but I was just thinking about how I was watching bringing up bates over the summer and how they went to Florida to visit Alyssa and they went on the beach and the older(girl) siblings were telling the younger (boy) siblings on to looking down at the sand because looking at the women in bikinis (and I'm pretty sure they blurred those women as well on the episode) to help them with their self control.

So out of the public but yes of course your little boy siblings would rip off the clothes of the ladies on the beach!

I was in Spain with my kids where a lot of women sunbathed topless.I explained to my 8 year old son that different countries have different customs. His only response was to say if they could go topless, he shouldn't have to wear shoes for dinner.

He grew up fine, and was always respectful to women. If you always make a big deal of women in bikinis or shorts, you're going to get some unhealthy curiosity.

Exactly. I grew up seeing bikinis and shorts as no big deal. You're born naked after all, and as long as you're not running around the Plaza Hotel or the Grand Mosque in basically your underwear, having slightly more of your skin showing than usual isn't bad or anything to be ashamed of. And women who are wearing shorts and bikinis are generally doing so because it's hot out and they want to get a nice tan, not to entice men or whip them into frenzies of uncontrollable lust.

Ya, I was on the same bandwagon. In my house growing up "inappropriate" meant unsuitable for the event. You don't wear shorts to a nice dinner, but to movies it's fine. I can distinctly remember my mom saying to my cousin "I can see your butt" while she was wearing a very short skirt, but my cousin replied "ya, when I bend over its too short" ok then, as long as you're aware of it and won't be embarrassed, carry on. you're going to the mall, not to meet the queen of England and if you want to dress a little trashy that's your prerogative. Most people grow out of that stage of wanting to show off too much skin. And despite that nonchalant upbringing, if I recall correctly, I was the only one in my highschool tour group that didn't have to purchase new clothes on our trip in order to enter the Vatican.

Zealots, religious and political, are tiresome. Even food zealots. Although my family might have been better off had I been a neat freak.

Exactly! Your kid wasn't traumatized. In fact, the most pressing issue was him wanting to go barefoot, because, you know, he's a kid! It reminded me of when I was growing up, and my parents weren't really big drinkers, so alcohol was never really in our house. However, when we'd go out to nice restaurants for dinner, my parents always offered to let us have a small sip of their wine or beer. At 9, I'd try a little bit, realize how disgusting it tasted, and say, "No thanks mom, I'll stick with my cherry Pepsi, thank you very much." Alcohol wasn't taboo in our house, because my parents dealt with those issues  responsibly when I was growing up.

it's has nothing to really do with stopping the boys from ripping off clothes or initiating anything physical with women. It's to stop him having 'lustful thoughts' by seeing scantily clad females.

I grew up being told I had to dress modestly. it was never sold as something to do because guys can't control themselves physically but to help them not have sinful thoughts. Because you know looking at someone and thinking 'damn isn't he hot' is evil and all... and might lead to porn (eek sin!NIKE!) but was never something that was spouted as leading to rape/not controlling body. I can't really explain why I think that is a difference but it has always seemed to be one to me.

That said I was allowed to wear shorts (no hotpants though) and jeans, just wasn't allowed to show too much skin or wear tops that put any emphasis on the little boob-age I had so it wasn't as bad as some people had it.

Oh. My. God. Someone, start a gofundme right now to sponsor a drag queen named "Mimi Champagne" who we WILL collectively, with the power of snark and good wigs, push into the top 2 of Drag Race. That is the most spectacularly camp name I have ever seen! Also, she will dress as a slutty sailor.

I love it!! I'm a huge fan of Drag Race!! I would totally root for Mimi Champagne. But she has to have the attitude of Bianca and the looks of Chad Michaels!  Lol

I have heard of such things - a once famous actress in Australia (on Home and Away lol) found out she was pregnant again 6 weeks after giving birth to her first child. Her two kids are less than 11 months apart.

She thought she couldn't get pregnant so quickly and that you were infertile around 6 months after birth.

She's also NOT fundy and as far as I know she is educated too.

My aunt and uncle are 11 months apart. And i don't even know how they managed to make my uncle after almost dying during my aunts birth and her being premature (she weighted a little over a kilo) (seriously, she wasn't even born in a hospital, and this was 58 years ago, i don't knoe how she made it)

It is actually possible to get pregnant again WHILE PREGNANT.  There are twins in Portland who were conceived 2 months apart (not born the same day, it got complicated).  Imagine how blessed a fundie would think they were.  Although without proper prenatal care they might not know in advance.
