At least he's being allowed to proclaim his love for her, and they're not using the Bradrick Method: "Well, you look pretty sturdy, so okay... But don't go getting all mushy on me."

I'm just glad Mr. Serven didn't pull the same shenanigans that he did with Rebecca & Steven Loomis by making Sarah's fiance wait several years before approving their marriage. We never heard the full story but it always sounded like a power play to me.

So that leaves only one Serven daughter at home after Sarah marries. I think Ben is the only adult son who isn't married. Pa Serven might have lightened up a little since he's getting older. Glad to see Sarah is wearing skirts above the knee. Sarah's sisters made their own wedding dresses. Wonder if she will do the same.

A power play, and also most likely keeping her at home as long as possible to help raise the younguns.

Something must be wrong with the servenclan blog--it shows last August and when I clicked on "Home" I got the same thing. I remember all the one girl had to go thru to get married--should have just run off and eloped!

The Servens haven't updated their blog since August 2013. I'm hope they post about the wedding.

Where are people seeing photos of Sarah and her skirt and the chickens at the farm? The Serven blog I see hasn't been updated since August 2013 when Rebecca had her baby girl.

He's got a couple of photos on his Twitter page (and she is indeed showing some knee in her short skirt). She looks like a lot more fun than either of her olders sisters (Beth always looks like she needs an enema, and Rebecca always looks like she's deep in prayer -- no fun for either of those two).

They're gonna have some red-headed kids!

Long-time Serven watcher here (they were my gateway dominionistic family) and I'm reluctant to be too hard on Beckers and Beth, though your descriptions of them are pretty funny-snarky.

The Rev. Dr. Dad Serven is one of those "child of a broken home, not repeating the sins of the parents" dominionists who with his dear wife (why is everything "dear" with this subculture?) quickly populated the family.

Left to raise some pretty closely spaced kids along with homeschooling them, it was more or less a given that Mom Serven would be overwhelmed and very tired. Thus, I am sure, it came to pass that when the family bought and remodeled in the Midwest, The Rev. Dr. and Mrs.S enjoyed a bedroom on the main floor, while the four girls and five boys shared two dorm-rooms in the basement. This was when the youngest two children - both boys - were 4 and 6, approx.

So far, no big whoop, except that Rebecca wrote at least once of one of her very youngest brothers waking up in the middle of the night and calling out not for Mother dear but for Rebecca.

IOW, I do believe the Servens had the sister-mom thing going on way before the Duggars ever figured it out.

So it stands to reason that Bec & Beth would grow up a lot more serious-minded and with adult-sized expectations that Sarah and Lydia got only partly.

As the saga of the Loomii unfolded (authority over Rebecca was transferred some time in her 29th year, though she'd known her husband for at least four years, and he'd asked The Rev.Dr. to court her almost immediately), it seemed to me that the reason given for The Rev.Dr.'s slow deliberation was not - as stated - that Stephen needed to be trained and vetted by his local dominionist church. No, it seemed evident then and continues to present every kind of logic, that he was saving his wife's sanity and thus his own bacon by keeping the eldest daughters home as long as possible.

Why Beth was allowed to marry a year before her oldest sister, I don't get. But I'm guessing that like any later-born worth her salt, she worked the rules around to become less valuable to her folks, thus being transferred to the authority of the Abe Lincoln-standalike in Wisconsin at the relatively tender age of 25 or so. Sarah's 22-ish. Goodness gracious, at this rate, they'll be transferring Lydia's authority before she's 21! Guessing the Drewster and Joely-boy are manageable at this point.

Abe Lincoln-standalike -- lol! Yep. I think Beth was allowed to marry first because "Abe" came along and was willing to marry her. She's not the beauty Rebecca is (and I do think Rebecca is beautiful) and always seems to be less than happy, so they were probably thrilled to get her married off. Even in her wedding photos, she just looked like she was in pain. I know she's probably just shy, but I've never seen her look what I would call joyful. They stuck her on a farm in Wisconsin with Abe and that seems to be working out fine.

I agree -- I think Rebecca was kept at home because she was very useful in raising the little ones and she kept the family blog up which supported their ministry. It was crazy Steven had to wait so long to marry her But glad he finally got her. Their kids are really cute and I wish she still blogged because with the exception of her religious babble, I thought she was a pretty interesting person with cooking and decorating and having the babies.

I always wondered how that move of theirs went going from sunny California with their love of ocean views to wherever they live now (is it Missouri?). I would think that was a lot of culture shock even for a fundie like old Pa Serven. An FWIW, I'm pretty impressed he actually has a doctorate degree. Most fundies who are "pastors" and "preach the word" don't.

Most Calvinist ministers are actually very well educated. Most seminaries require a BA and a working knowledge of ancient languages before they'll let them in the door and then there's another 4-5 years study before they're considered qualified to be ordained. It's just that they're true believers who think that their field of knowledge (how one, particularly dour Frenchman interpreted his world with the help of an old book) should be applied to the entire universe.

Wondering in WA and uberfrau, I'm actually with you on admiring The Rev.Dr.'s advanced degrees (I'm guessing the degree he had before getting his Doc. of Divinity was master's level (it is in Lutheran circles, FWIW).

What confounds me about that is that not one of his 9 children - including 3 grownboysmen - ever pursued advanced education after graduating from Serven Genius Academy (uh,no.). One a self-employed web/photo guy whose Vision Forum account went away recently! One is an order-taker/customer-service specialist for Blinds.com. The third is, IIRC, in financial planning? I could be wrong. My financial planner has a bachelor's degree in it from the state university's business school. Cutie-pie and progressive [sic] as Nathan Serven is, I wouldn't take his advice on my IRA until I'd checked and triple-checked it with other advisers.

Why would you want to hobble your children in life when you, yourself, have pursued at least 2,maybe 3 degrees???

As to being "stuck on a farm in Wisconsin" - Beth & Abe honeymooned in Europe. Just saying - I imagine the farm on which they're stuck is pretty nice, and that they're able to take some decent days away. Needs of the Ten Dolle Child Army taken into consideration, of course.

LOL about Nathan -- I know! My investment advisor is paid for his education and the ability to, uh, not lose my money. Although he's not nearly as cute as Nathan, so...

But your point is well made -- none of the boys, er, men seem to have pursued a higher education. I'm sure Pa Serven would have encouraged that, so it is telling that none of the boys did it. And was one of them a VF intern? I remember one of the boys moved in with another couple of boys and was hosting a food blog for awhile, but I don't remember which one.

I'd forgotten about the European honeymoon. They went to the home of the Ten Dolles, right, so Holland or Denmark or wherever they come from.

I sure hope the Wisconsin farm is nice. The few photos I've ever seen make it look remote (but I guess by nature, if you've got acreage, you ARE in fact remote). Maybe Beth likes the fact there are only 5 people living there instead of the 10 others she left when she married.

Oh, and upthread, someone mentioned that both Beth and Rebecca made their own wedding gowns. I thought Beth's was ugly, but Rebecca's was nice. I'd like to see Sarah go the route of (was it) NR-Emily who had that vintage-looking number in an ivory damask that was form-fitting and slightly off the shoulder with no sleeves.

Sarah's glasses make her look smart and like she's got some spunk in her. I hope we'll get a chance to see some photos.

MJB, I LOL'd at your description of the Serven Clan dynamic. Well-played!

I always saw a similarity between Rebecca Serven and Sarah Maxwell, both oldest fundie-royalty daughters subjected to their fathers' heavy-handed control ("You're not leaving this family, young lady, until I'm darned good and ready to let you go!") - the difference being, of course, that Pa Serven finally released the shackles, while Stevehovah... :angry-banghead:

As for the three eldest Serven boysmen, they all have LinkedIn pages. Benjamin's says he's a "Customer Service Specialist at Global Custom Commerce" (no update mentioning blinds sales), and includes previous ties to Vision Forum. Benjamin is also the one who had the Hungry Toothpick blog, which is no more; only its Facebook page remains. Peter's (married to Meredith) says he's an Entrepreneur at Serven Design, with past ties to VF, Blue Behemoth, Leclerc Brothers Motion Pictures, and Franklin Springs Family Media, AND an endorsement from - wait for it - Tait Zimmerman! Nathan's (married to Emily-of-the-nose-ring) says he's a Registered Representative for New England Securities. Annnnd, no mentions of ebil institutions of higher learning anywhere.

MtL, when I know I've made you LOL, my day's been made!

It puzzles me that of 3 evidently intelligent (though probably not "genius," strictly speaking) sons, none of the Serven lads pursued college. You'd've thought their dad would dearly want it for them! OTOH if he took them at their words that they did not "feel the call to ministry" then good for him - it's rarely a good story when a minister more or less forces his progeny into the calling.

Guess I'm uniformly suspicious of highly educated parents of my generation whose children are muddling through with only a high-school diploma. Granted, if Nate's a registered rep then he's taken some courses from the insurance corporation, most likely.

What are the chances that out of 7 grown children of a man who's obviously academically stimulated, none would have expressed any interest in attending college :shifty-kitty: .... oh, wait -- four of those are girl-chirrun, and we all KNOW the only post-SOTDRT table education they need is how to conceive and bear the babies. My bad.

And with this, I am going dark for about a week - carry on, my wayward ones!!!! I'll be back. :P

  • 4 weeks later...

To treat myself after a morning's hard work, I googled the couple and find that their wedding website requires a password to find out about (a) the wedding party and (b) the location.

Say what you want about the Servens, they *do* learn from past events.

Keep trying to crack that password, MJB - it would be so cool if you could go incognito a second time!

Is Peter the photographer? If so, then he did Tait's sister's wedding photos, and they are exquisite. She was so impressed with his attention to detail, and the way he photographed little things she wouldn't have thought to get pictures of, but is so glad he did. She says he was expensive, but worth every penny. They even flew him up.

Babycakes, Link to the Zimmerman lady's wedding site , or at least to Tait's happy comments, please??

Everybody loves a good photograph! 8-)

ETA: I'm no good at password cracking (alas) but I hope someone else is. It's not a year worth its name if there's not a quality extremist Dominionistic wedding to see! Especially when the principal characters are so winsomely charming. I'm fond of Sarah's family but I fear them, too - they seem so, so ... Nice, and meaning no one any harm--!!

We are friends in real life and I have no idea if her Facebook is public. She has wedding photos on her Pinterest if you know her name ;-). And they were her happy comments, not Tait's. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be a tease

She is beautiful, and so was her wedding. I just had one of those "ah" moments when I realized y'all were talking about her wedding photog.
