I wouldn't be surprised if the Maxwells were desperate for one of their children to marry a Duggar. Doesn't matter how worldly they think they are, it would be great for their business. Instant publicity. They've been to two of the graduations and Steve was just pimping their book. I bet like someone said in another thread they want Jana for Joseph.

I wouldn't be surprised if eventually a match was made. But I hope beyond all hope it's one of the boys, not one of the girls.

No Jana! Please don't court Joseph.

I hope that's not what is happening.

Could the 'congratulations Josiah' on the cake be a little smaller?

I'm just not getting a good feeling about this. There's not really an innocuous reason I can come up with for the Maxwells and the Duggars to be showing up together and scratching each other's backs so much lately. Maybe the Maxwells are hanging on and cozying up in an attempt to drive up book sales, etc. but the Rodrigueses have also tried to do the social climbing thing without too much success (unless you count the backs of their heads getting on TV). I'm just really stuck on the fact that the Duggars have endorsed a Maxwell book. I really think something is going on here, and I don't like it.

More hopeful speculation:

Maybe JD likes older women and is after Sarah? Or maybe any of the daughters. Honestly, I'm not picky. Just get them out!

Can you imagine JD and Sarah together? I’m just having visions of boring Sarah, sweetly and quietly making her bean burrito mix, while JD is out trashing people’s cars and doing that obnoxious laugh the entire time doing so. It would be like marrying an overgrown 15 year old. Yikes.

John Maxwell and Jana? Seriously though, I really can't imagine a Maxwell/Duggar match happening, because son or daughter, any Maxwell that marries into the Duggar dog'n'pony show is going to be away from Steve's compound WAY more than Steve would be comfortable with. Something to consider...

I think you're right.

I bet Steve and JB are just best buddies. Both are the boss in their houses, both have their families invested in their respective dog'n'pony shows, both are Real Christian Men . They've got a lot in common. However, neither could let go of their kid enough for a Duggar/Maxwell marriage.

Unless Steve is willing to let one go in exchange for the massive publicity. He's got to be needing that right now. Something to consider...

What if the whole Maxwell clan (the married sons and their families included) moved to Arkansas so both compounds could be near each other. Or adjacent. I thought the world might explode from so much fundiness in one location.

Seriously though, I think you're right about neither family/father being willing to relinquish enough control for the families to intermarry. Plus, how would Stevus explain his offspring being featured on The Beast™.

I wonder if Stevus knows his wife was recently featured on The Beast™? I wonder how he will explain that one away.

No. Please no. If there is a Maxwell/Duggar courtship, please let it be one of the Maxwell girls with a Duggar boy. I wouldn't want either of the two remaining Jslaves to be condemned to that miserable life.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Money is Steve's god. I do think he would be willing to give up one of his kids in exchange for the Duggar gravy train. Even if it meant that they would live further away from him than he would like.

Let's be honest here. Even the most conservative of fundie families would chop off an arm and a leg and mail it to TLC to get one of their kids married to a Duggar. In the fundie world, it is an "honor" and a "privilege." One that many might eschew because they don't like publicity, but few would turn down when actually presented with the golden ticket of opportunity.

I wholeheartedly agree something is going on. I think the gravy train has stopped, and Steve wants their family to be featured on a Duggar Wedding Special so people would be interested in them again.

Anna and John David maybe?

I keep saying that I don't think Jim Bob would sacrifice his children/force them into things for the sake of money or publicity... but I think Steve Maxwell absolutely would. He comes across as a manipulative, cold-hearted sociopath. If he can sink his claws into the Duggars somehow, he will.

I second this! No Duggar girls deserve to be condemned to life as a Maxwell.

Did anyone notice any other Maxwells at Josiah's party? I looked but couldn't spot any. I really doubt Teri would have been allowed to travel alone, though, so there ought to be at least one more.

So, how was it decided that Josiah was ready to graduate? His birthday is at the end of August so he is young. Did he pass the GED? How are graduations determined in the homeschool world? Or at least in the Duggar SOTDRT?

Wasn't there another Duggar graduations we saw pics of Steve-O and some of the children at. Seem to remember a thread on that, think it may have been around the time of Joseph's courtship announcement.

Steve took the girls only to Jinger and Joseph's graduation. I believe he wrote about it although he did not mention the family's name in one of his corners. It seemed that he had a big debate with himself about getting a motel room.

There were pictures of that party on Josh's instagram.

Why the debate over the motel room?

It probably wasn't on the schedule.

Or he didn't want people to talk about him being alone in a hotel room with his daughters. :ew:

I doubt very much JB and Steve are "best buddies" with anyone, let alone each other. Both of them need very badly to be Top Dog, and guys like that surround themselves with subordinates as much as possible. If they do associate with each other, it's as ideological allies in patriarchal homeschooling circles. They may be on friendly terms, but they are unlikely to be true friends.

And honestly, I don't believe Steve wants the massive publicity that would come with marrying one of his kids to a Duggar. They are about as well-known within fundie homeschooling circles as they are going to get. Steve's already none too happy with the existence of Free Jinger; do you really think he's going to want the level of scrutiny and public snark to increase?

Then there's the hypocrisy of marrying one of their kids into a family who appear on the Beast every week, and at every other opportunity that presents itself. JB and Michelle own commercial real estate and a used car lot, among other ventures. They are far, far too worldly for the insular Maxwells. JB likes control, but he loves money more. Steve left a well-paying career because he couldn't exert the level of control he needs.

For some reason, the kinds of huge weddings where the parents' business associates get invited (regardless of how well they know the bride and groom) comes to mind. It isn't that they love these people and are close to them; it's part of a set of complicated mutual social obligations and expectations. This isn't a wedding, but it is the homeschool graduation of the son of a big shot within that extremist part of the movement.

So the guest list has very little to do with Josiah, and just about everything to do with his parents being important enough to have major figures in the movement drive a significant distance to attend. Who got invited--or didn't? Who showed up? And for the attendees, it's a chance to gather in one place and network face-to-face with a select bunch of like-minded people.

The Maxwells and Duggars go way back - the Duggars were one of the original test families for either scheduling or chore packs, I forget which. Pictures have popped up of the Maxwells socialising with Duggars before - there is a picture floating round from 5 ish years ago of Sarah Maxwell with Jana and Jill.

I really really hope there is no courtship in the works, but it wouldn't completely surprise me. Mary and Josiah could work in a few years. But I hope Jana isn't ever sentenced to Maxhell.

I would be ok with Jana and John. I think John has some fire inside that the Maxwells have crushed somewhat, but I think he will be his own man when he leaves and cleaves.

Maybe this is why Stevie is sort of lightening up a bit and changing some things. Maybe he's seeing a courtship with a Duggar as his new cash cow. I've always thought it odd they maintained their friendship after the Duggars went on TV, but they have, so Stevie must have had to reconcile that. Jesus must have purposed his heart to forgive the Duggars for being on TV. Something like that.
