Judah Benjamin was the name the Duggars almost named Jackson. Interesting.

I believe that one of the Bates boys is named Judah Benjamin.

The Bates also had a photo of the man who started the Klan on their walls but they took down the picture when someone pointed out that the individual started a racist terrorist group.

The Duggars don't seem very educated so I could believe that they just copied the Bates but I think that the Bates know who Judah Benjamin was.

I would have no trouble at all believing that Michelle and Dim Bulb don't know who the original Judah Benjamin was. Voddie is far more intelligent and informed, so it's quite the head-scratcher that he'd use the name for his son.

The Bateses do not have a son named Judah Benjamin, though I am sure they know who Judah Benjamin was.

The Duggars said that they changed to Jackson Levi instead of Judah Benjamin because some other friends had a son they named Judah Benjamin right before Jack son was born. I'm guessing that may have been a front for not wanting to appear racist.

If I am reading his twitter account correct, Doug's son is running a marathon in Arizona. Of course, the young man should go on with his life but if this story has been ongoing when did the older kids know? This seems like a very big change in their lives

Oh, noes-- the sodomites got him!

Do these Fundy Families know that Judah P. Benjamin was Jewish?? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judah_P._Benjamin

Before he became a Confederate Cabinet Member, he was the 2nd Jewish U.S. Senator.

I imagine they do, but probably rationalize it away because he was a Confederate. He doesn't seem to have identified as a Jew, since he married a Catholic and had his daughter raised as a Catholic as well.

Changing the subject a bit...I wonder if ATI will try to position itself to attract families who might have joined VF. On the one hand, the cultures seem kind of different. On the other hand, $$$s and power in numbers.

Opinions?

Just in practical terms, AFAIK, VF does not offer a full-fledged curriculum/homeschooling program. It's more like "enrichment" stuff that people could buy via catalog, no membership required. ATI, however, is a complete (however woefully inadequate) homeschool system that you have to apply and be accepted and pay membership fees to receive. So people aren't going to just switch "membership" between the two or "join" one instead of the other. They never positioned themselves in the same way toward the homeschooling community, even apart from the differences of culture and emphasis.

He never participated in Jewish ritual or community as an adult, and he intermarried, but he also never renounced Judaism or converted to another religion. (This was unlike contemporary, Sen. David Yulee, who became a Christian.) He was always open about his Jewish background. He was also the first Jew nominated for the US Supreme Court, but he turned down the opportunity.

Not a Confederate apologist--I am a dramaturg for a play about a Jewish confederate soldier, so the research is fresh in my mind right now.

VF's theology is Calvinist, while ATI is Baptists. I doubt that people like the Duggars or the Bateses think very much about theology, but many VF people seem to pride themselves specifically on being Calvinist. VF and ATI both sell a lifestyle, but the former is more about buying accessories, while ATI sells curriculums. Fundies can pick and choose with VF products, which is why conservatives from other groups occasionally purchased from there, but if a family decides to go ATI, they really have to go "all in" and change their entire way of life.

GeoBQn, what's the name of the play? I heard something about a story concerning a Jewish Confederate soldier not long ago, and I'm going crazy trying to remember the details.

It's true that ATI leans Baptist/biblicist/low-church, but it's not affiliated with a specific denomination or Protestant tradition. I've met Calvinist ATI members.

On the matter of the "Judah Benjamin" debate: It's hard to overestimate how popular both of those individual names are in evangelical and fundamentalist circles. Benjamin has been popular for decades among conservative American Christians, and Judah is even enjoying renewed popularity in the American population at large, thanks to a broad trend of reaching to the Hebrew Bible for traditional names that are less popular than, say, Adam and David. Search here and see for yourself: http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/babyname.cgi.

I'm not interested in defending Christian Reconstructionism's interest in the Confederacy, but in the absence of actual evidence that these names are more than just unlucky accidents, it seems more important to me to focus on the heaping stacks of problematic, VF-related issues for which there are more solid evidence.

These unlucky accidents do happen, by the way: I myself have met a non-fundy Jeff Davis whose parents were entirely uninterested in the Confederacy and just choosing a name that happened to be trendy at the time.

Well, it appears the next thing in the VF Fire Sale is Roman swords, buy one get one free!!

Disciple Your Boys

With the Swords They Dream About!

Just as girls play at being mommies and wives, so do boys play at being protectors and defenders of the innocent. With a sword in his hand, a boy becomes a shining knight giving aid to a damsel in distress, or an ancient warrior defending his homeland from evil aggressors. In fact, a boy’s play-life is teeming with opportunities for fathers to teach their boys when and how to engage in battle — any battle, whether one of ideas or one that is physical.

This is why Vision Forum sells swords. They are more than just toys. With thoughtful instruction, they become tools of learning that benefit our sons both physically and spiritually. When properly directed, today’s boyhood play incorporates physical exertion, strategy, and endurance in the midst of challenging circumstances so that, tomorrow, our sons can stand prepared.

How exactly are fathers supposed to "disciple" their sons with real sword unless they're actually swordsmanship teachers? And when have VFers ever protected anyone, innocent or otherwise?

You're forgetting the good work of the illustrious BRADRICK company. Protectors extraordinaire, schooled at the prestigious school of anaconda hunting and other pompous wankery.

Voddie either named his son "Judah Benjamin" in his endless quest to be the Christian Dominion movement's Official Black Friend Who Doesn't Think It's Racist, or despite being an extremely intelligent (though wrong about everything) and educated man who spent his entire adult life in former Confederate states, spaced out on the connection between the names "Judah Benjamin" and the #3 official of the Confederacy.

Neither reflects particularly well on him.
