It would be really funny if the majority of candidates answered honestly - membership in the GOP would plummet!

What's truly amusing is that Laurens County (the SC county in question) is truly at least 80% (numbers off the top of my head.. don't google and hate me) rural. And by rural, I mean SC rural. As in the sheriff of another very small county in SC was recently arrested because he has consistantly gotten himself and his rather large extended family out of all court cases. "City" with population of 200 something. This, my friends, is the reason I am so grateful the Duggars do not live in my backasswards home state. They could have their own county there!

The article mentions the sheriff who drove his mistress to get an abortion, but I think they're still smarting from when Governor Sanford disappeared/went to Argentina.

My question is: what will happen if other counties through the USA decide to pick this up?

As another daughter of the Palmetto State, this is one of my fav quotes! And Laurens County is a pretty country-ass place. Also, if you think southern GOP-ers are a special brand of crazy, you should see the ones in the SC upstate. They are in their own category!

No, Gov. Sanford went hiking, in the Appalachians. In Argentina. That's what a SC educations gets you. Bad geography!

Aren't there already laws in some states against adultery? (Which I do back. You've entered into a contract with another person of fidelity, and based on that, the other person makes health/life-impacting decisions, such as not using barrier methods for birth control because there's trust the spouse won't be fucking around and risking diseases that could be passed to the other partner. However it's different when both people consent to other partners as each could then reevaluate condoms and whatnot.)

Now I'm not a fan of porn, but to expect people to take pledges? What next, pledges to only have sex for procreation?

What the fuck? Do you have any idea what 'for cause' divorces did to women before no fault? Do you have any concept of how women were publicly demeaned? How those proceedings limited their career opportunities, their abilities to join churches and integrate their children into communities?

What about people that choose to marry but don't make sexual monogamy part of their personal commitments to each other? Do you really believe that they too should be bound by some archaic law? Do you want to strip every vestige of privacy from marriage?

I guess you'd be happy with honor killings being legal too. What a bunch of abrahamic bullshit.

Ain't that the truth (note my SC-approved sentence structure). I went to middle school and half of high school in upstate South Carolina and I'm completely shocked at how little knowledge of geography and history I have compared to my peers. The sad part? My schools were supposedly some of the best in the state.

ETA: I think I may've already had this discussion with CelticGoddess, though!

Hear, hear, says this native Palmetto Stater. Having lived here forever, I'm used to the crazee. But it's always fun to see how much this place shocks people from "off." Or it would be fun if so much of the shit that goes on wasn't so tragically right-wing.

Let us not forget the fact that downtown Laurens has a freaking KKK store. I would say that Laurens County is still pretty much 50 years behind even the rest of SC... which is 50 years behind the rest of America.

ETA That is not to say that everyone from Laurens is crazy. Some dear friends of mine from Laurens are kind, nice, non-racist and non-crazy.

I don't know, Greenville County has Bob Jones AND the Confederacy Museum... But, then, it's a stone's throw away from Laurens!

A KKK store? Aside from Stars and Bars flags, costumes, Mein Kampf and The Turner Diaries, what the heck does a KKK store sells?

I'm surprised the place hasn't been torched or vandalized yet.

Sheets, wooden crosses, ropes... ;)

Actually, in January a judge awarded the building that contains the store to a black church.

There's a short film (from 2008) about the store up on youtube too.

I honestly didn't know about that. I can't believe it but yet, I can.

If you think that's nuts, just google "Maurice's BBQ".

But please don't think we're all batshit crazy. I promise there are many, many of us that are decent and kind and not racist or bigoted. Lovely places to visit, too. 8-)
