Another view of chastity

I was reading the NYT this morning and there was a nice article on Dolores Hart who gave up stardom to become a nun. She's the subject of a documentary on HBO this April.She gave Elvis his first screen kiss. This is what struck me:

She confessed to the mother superior that she was worried “that it was wrong as a Catholic to be in the movies because sexually you could be aroused by boys and you could get involved sexually with men. And my leading star was Elvis. She said: ‘Well, why not? You’re a girl. Chastity doesn’t mean that you don’t appreciate what God created. Chastity says use it well.’ â€

That to me says a lot. Too bad fundie girls aren't given that kind of option. They'd be a lot happier.

I've read that Anne Hathaway, of all people, considered being a nun before she broke into stardom.

I have a secret fantasy of being a nun, sometimes. The simple, semi-cloistered life appeals to me. But I am not religious, so that's out.

That's a nice line .. I don't understand at all the obsession with not even LOOKING at attractive people, particularly when you are young and single. If you don't believe in actual sex outside of marriage, fine - but to act like even the most mild flirtation or sexual attraction is evil is just beyond odd imho
