Chapters 5-6

Chapters 5-6

Her parents gave them the bare details of Josh. She knew he was sent away to work construction and would come back. It wasn’t a topic Jill wanted to discuss. Jill wanted to move on. She had also been taught to “not stir upcontention among the brethren” which became a tool for silence and control and guilt.

Jill says the boys could drive by age 12. In the meantime she could prepare a family meal, teach a kid to read,  change diapers, and babysit. Wow. That comparison really spoke to me. Jill says her parents missed an opportunity here and I think she means equity in chores and responsibilities?

The kids became JBs political staff. They felt superior about being out in the world, effecting it, instead of a dangerous classroom. The kids were relives though when he lost because they didn’t want to move to DC. But the loss was written up in the article, which then got them a feature in a magazine, which got them the Discovery documentary. JB was convinced this was Gods plan all along.

Jill was uncomfortable with the filming but couldn’t feel she could tell her parents. But When they filmed at Aldi they were able to buy whatever they wanted because the show was paying. Way to show real life, Discovery. When the crew wasn’t around they mostly ate beans and macaroni.

Josh came back and Jill believed he was “fixed”.  They move to the Big House because Discovery helped pay to get it done for more filming.

Jill truly believed they were doing a “ministry” and not looking for fame or money.

Gothard visits their house.

Jill goes to Journey of the Heart. Afterward Jana was personally invited by Gothard to come to headquarters. They joked it was because Gothard famously loves blondes. She now regrets joking about it.

Kayleigh Holts letter gets discovered. Jill was very scared CPS would take her away from her parents. Jimbob was angry. The home church became aware. He thought the church backstabbed them. And they pulled back from the church. The church split. Jill didn’t want to confront her feelings, just move on.

My rage after reading the snippets/bombshells has inspired me to sign up for audible.

You go Jill, I hope she is receiving tons of support and has managed to block out all the negativity from her family/judgey church people.

I also hope that the IRS is or will soon begin an investigation into her despicable asshole of a father.

She doesn't need that 1/19th of your money Jim Bob, but by all means keep publicly threatening her and reveal more of your disgusting treatment of your children to the world.

I will buy a book only if I think I'll reread it or treasure it some other way. But it shouldn't be much longer at the library. I'm finishing two other books on my day off today so I'm ready for it.

I signed up for a free audible trial and used the credit, although I am not sure this is a book I will be able to handle this book in audio book (i think parts of it will be be too heavy) but I appreciate Jill telling her own story,

Lol! If he knew anything about therapy he would know you aren’t actually allowed to be “friends” with your clients it’s a professional relationship. Not a friendship.

Chapter 7

Spoiler

Chapter 7

She and her sisters promote their growing up Duggar book. She makes sure no one can take any comment as negative. They all know the party line about it being a ministry, etc, and parrot their parents.

But Jill didn’t like when producers sprung surprises in them, and filming becomes stressful. She says she had to keep her reality away from tv. (Very insightful, I can’t help but wonder if that was something she worked on in therapy)She had to keep sweet.

The fame helped them become a Model family for IBLP

She talks about umbrella of protection and needing parental approval. She also talks about how her parents taught leave and cleave and how they might do things differently when they were married and that was ok. But in reality…it wasn’t ok for Jill. Her parents clipped her wings. She gives examples of how IBLP keeps people sheltered so they can’t leave.

Josh is in trouble again. He got caught looking at porn on someone’s phone. He left for several months for more labor. They didn’t discuss it much, and always vaguely.

She describes a scene where JB disturbed her with comments when someone asked if God really wanted him to minister personally to one person rather than a microphone in a stadium to reach more. JB thought quantity was more important than quality in a way. She wonders in JB thinks he knows better than God himself.

Courtship talk . We hear the spiel we’ve all heard before. Then she describes how Jimbob started pushing Derrick on her. She thought he seemed nice and liked that he got to do adventures in mission work. She wasn’t romantically interested though.  She wanted to concentrate on midwifery. She also felt awkward especially when JB tries to convince her to fly around the world to meet him. I was surprised, I thought she had already had lots of conversations with Derrick at this point. But I guess that initial trip planned was different than the one we saw filmed. So maybe they did talk more by the time we saw the trip? So anyway JB then ambushes Jill into talking to Derick on the phone ( he normally just had Jill listen in to conversations). They have an introductory conversation that Derick carried. Again, Jill says he was nice but she wasn’t interested.

Jill talks about how filming became a chore. She’s grateful for some opportunities, but it stressed her out. Everything was rehearsed, but also rules would be bent if it was good for the show. Like they weren’t supposed to have physical touch with opposite gender but they were supposed to film some archery triple date where they were supposed to put arms around each other. I can see how this would drive you crazy and stress you out. Jill also speaks about having her wisdom teeth taken out. She was already anxious but she didn’t have the option to say no to filming. She says Michelle was uncomfortable with births being filmed.

She warms up to Derick. Jill asks the producer if they film meeting him in Nepal and the relationship doesn’t work out, would it still air? He says yes. Jill thinks that’s be humiliating. Producer wants 5 days, and Jill stands up to him and says no. This is her life and if she’s going to decide if she wants to marry him, she needs 2 weeks. She agrees to film a goodbye scene after 5 days and even tells him she will turn on the tears for the camera. They agree. In retrospect she wishes she could have met Derick in private. She does say her yes to courtship was pure. They told each other they loved each other on that trip! JB the chaperone was asleep lol.

When Derick returned from Nepal, his family waited on another floor at the airport so Jill could get their reunion filmed.

Miss Cathy gets diagnosed with cancer. One doctor told her she had no hope. Jill was shattered as she had become close to Cathy. She thought the loneliness of no parents and one brother would be unbearable. Jill talks that Ronnie the stepdad cares for Cathy 24/7. I’ve always wondered about Ronnie as he stays out of the spotlight.

A lot of wedding details are made with the show in mind. For the most part Jill didn’t care. But Jill wanted guests to be able to take photos and share on a private website and the network wanted exclusive rights. Jill gives in because she was tired and stressed. They decide it’s not a hill to die on.

Jimbob buys a plane to get to speaking appearances. He gets a family friend to be the pilot and gets lessons for John David out of it. Jill is afraid to ask where the money for a plane came from.

8 days before the wedding Cathy gets lifeflighted to a hospital. Really scary! In the midst of this JB has Jill sign some docs about the show. She signs

Jill just announced “chapter 4:costs”. my screen is showing I’m on chapter 8 though now so I apologize if my literal chapter summaries aren’t accurate. Idk why my verbal and written chapters aren’t matching up!

Personally, I have those two criteria, plus one more.

I also buy books that I want to pass on to others. The book by Jill falls under that category, I will be passing this on to some young women who would benefit from the read, but aren’t in a position to buy it or be allowed to get it from the library.

There is so much blather about protecting women, guarding daughters, and all manner of chivalrous lip service, and yet at every turn where they might be needed they are literally or figuratively asleep at the wheel.

I don’t think Jill and Derrick needed a chaperone, but if JB went around the globe to do that job, why on earth was he asleep?

I haven’t ordered this yet, was waiting to see what fellow snarkers said (and the library isn’t an option for that here). Finally have the impetus to get my Amazon account unlocked (logging in from the computer in the next room when mine broke is apparently so suspicious, urgh. No idea how to do it though. They said they‘d send details in an email, but sweet FA.)

Jim Bob seems to come off even worse than I thought he could, I really thought I couldn’t dislike him more than I did. What an absolute POS. Any chance he could get into trouble for claiming that he paid Jill, when he clearly didn’t?

Jet lag I bet. Lol. Just goes to show the whole chaperone thing is ridiculous. Because you can’t watch people 24/7. You gotta sleep!

Chapter 8. Again, Jill verbally says the chapters are different than what my screen is showing, so I am just going by my screen to keep up more easily as I take notes. Idk why they don’t match up but everything is in order, numbered chapters be damned.

Spoiler

Chapter 8

They get married.

Jill says privacy was the cost they paid for fame and experiences. She said her honeymoon was not for sale though. She didn’t like the way Anna and Josh were portrayed as naive kids eager for sex.

Cathy gets the all clear and Jill learns she’s pregnant.

Crew gets upset when they run late for filming but Derick is working 45 hours a week at Walmart. They are not getting paid for filming. Sometimes filming took til midnight. We all made fun of Jill for driving Derrick to work daily but Jill explains those drives actually became their safe place to talk while not being filmed. That hurt to hear. Honestly. I feel bad for them. They agree the filming is hard, especially with the morning sickness. Jill wonders if Jessa having kids will lighten the load. 🫤 Derick wants to quit filming but Jill doesn’t want to rock the boat.

Jill is frustrated how her pregnancy announcements are dictated. Derick is mad they are dancing monkeys for the network. He wants to make the announcement by themselves on their own terms. He asks about how birth will go then if they’re already controlling the narrative for a pregnancy. Jill worries about giving birth on film because Anna was embarrassed about giving birth on a toilet. Tlc said they wouldn’t do that but later added that clip to the show. Bastards! Jill is conflicted with wanting to please everyone- her husband, herself, her parents, the network. She doesn’t want to sin.

She goes to El Salvador for RESPITE FROM FILMING in her third trimester. She sleeps on an air mattress. yikes on bikes.

Someone broaches the subject of them serving the “gang neighborhood” for one year in Central America. Ummmm. Ok. Jilly muffin still isn’t changing my mind that they did anything of value over there.

She describes a meeting with producer Scott where she explains she doesn’t want her birth filmed. He cries! She reluctantly agrees to her mom and sisters filming because she worries if her dad gets involved with negotiations, she’ll end up with a worse deal than this.

I’m disturbed by with how long it took Jill to go to a hospital. What is this midwifery degree of hers? She says because of how long it was, Scott got so much more footage than they thought they would .

In may 2015 JB tells the kids a tabloid has info on Josh. Her and Jessa cry together when it gets released. She feels betrayed because when she was interviewed im they told her it was a safe place. Her voice breaks describing it. Jill says she had told Derick about it before they were engaged. Derick asks her how she is the day the story breaks and Jill wishes she was dead. She’s in the midst of post partem and this traumatized her. She says something about her whole life she worried about making men stumble and now the whole world was reading about it. Oof. That’s a terrible thought. You’re not guilty Jill, he is! Truly rough to hear. She names police officers she blames for the story getting out. She responds to people who have suggested she is placing blame on the wrong people and covering for her parents. She says no, she holds Josh responsible. But she holds those other people responsible for illegally releasing that report. (I can’t remember, was it illegal? Or just immoral? wasn’t it a FOIA? I’m not sure.) but I do have a lot of sympathy for her here. I’d hate it too.

Jill now feels uncomfortable around Josh. She felt it did happen a long time ago and they had moved on…but on the other hand while she was so miserable with the story being broken, he was having fun and laughing. Michelle “barks” at Josh and tells him to stop being so arrogant. Wow. Point one for Michelle I guess.

The show is on pause and it’s obviously bothering JB. Jill feels like she’s honor-bound to defend her parents. She feels nauseous as soon as she volunteers to do the interview and is relieved when Jessa says she’ll do it with her. Josh thanks them.

Jill kind of dissociates and says in her narration she doesn’t take into consideration what she’s really signing up for.

The ebook is 9 chapters plus an epilogue.

ETA I wish they had addressed the pre-marraige paperwork and any convos between JB and Derick about public schooling and homeschooling. I always wonder if Derick had said they wouldn't choose public school before JB "let" him court Jill.

Wow. This is confirming a lot of suspicions. Everything else comes off a lot worse than anyone could possibly imagine. I just want to give Jill an enormous hug and allow her to cry, scream, talk, whatever it takes. It must have taken enormous courage to put this out into the world.

I hope Jill got a massive advance from the publisher and that she and Derick are socking it away for their kids’ education and their own future security. I also hope Jim Bob and Josh are squirming in agony, but I highly doubt either has that much self-awareness.

This book is much more of a tell-all than I would ever have expected. I thought it would be more like Jinger’s fluff piece, lots of vague booking and Jesus-speak.

Chapter 9 that I think is showing as chapter 5 for others

Spoiler

Josh watches as they do the interview. Jill says it was agony.

They decide to go to Central America. Their location was outed and apparently gang violence increased.

They learn about Josh’s Ashley Madison scandal. Jill says this was the first time she actively went to Josh for information. She didn’t want to hear it second hand. He didn’t respond to her text. Her mom tells her it’s true a few days later. She reflects that the solution is to send Josh away. Again.

They go back to Arkansas for a visit. JB tells them Josh has been a role model wherever he is “away”. JB took lengths to make sure his location was a secret even after his flight number was leaked. Jill reflects on this. Josh is being kept from extra public humiliation. Jill and Derick don’t like this. SHE wants privacy. She wants her to dad to protect her and not the show. She feels as a woman she has to protect the men even though she was taught it’s supposed to be the other way around.

In El Salvador Jill hears a gunshot while at church. This terrifies her and she wonders if this could be a kidnap situation. It turned out to be a guard who let his friend fire a gun for fun.

They need to fundraise for their mission and money isn’t coming in. Derick wants to tell naysayers the show is a ministry and they don’t make money off it. They really do need to fundraise.

They decide to talk to her parents. JB dances around the topic. He says Michelle is the reason they have a show because she gave birth so many times. Dericks like yeah but the show is JILL AND JESSA. JB says airtime all averages out in the end. JB then offers ten bucks an hour but Jill thinks it’s a joke and not a true offer. Derick asks what the show is worth so they can appraise a salary. JB gets even more upset. He tells Derick he is reaching more people on television than Derick is on the field.

Jill talks about gangs. Apparently people leave you alone if you go to church? As long as you give them money. A neighbor dies and they assume murdered. They don’t have a lot of money but decide a full time guard is necessary.

Tlc wants to shoots promos in the USA but they already told their missions they’d stay a full year (I think? Maybe 6 months?) without flying home. They remind producers of this. Producer tried to bribe them with stuff for their mission trip. Parents pressure them.they offer to film themselves or have the crew visit and are turned down. Derick calls and says they are not obligated to do this. He’s told Jill is contractually bound to do all promotions. Jill has no idea what this is . They ask for a copy of the contract. They decide it’s their bill to die on. JB switches from persuasion to guilt trip. When that doesn’t work he tells them they’re going to get sued. They start avoiding his calls. Jill thinks the phone ringing is like listening to that gunshot. Her anxiety is palpable . She worries she’ll go to jail! Derrick tells her they’re not going to sue a small missionary. Jill feels like if the courts don’t get her, god will.

Her parents show up in El Salvador! They greet them with their phones filming them. Jesus! I am angry at how manipulative they are. Chapter ends here I assume the next is that conversation…

Like I said: Josh, despite all the horrible things he did, was the enforcer. I wonder if they also interviewed Josh after watching his sisters humiliate themselves in public for his sake, and then decided that showing him afterwards was too slimy even for Fox "news."

The bar is in hell.

I haven't been on here for a hot minute, because everything got pretty sad after the abuse came out, and it felt a bit weird to snark.  But I have lurked.  I was thinking of buying Jinger's book (on Audible, I have credits, I'm not paying extra money for any Duggar book) but it seemed wishy-washy.  From what I'm hearing though this isn't.   Do the Dillards go into their own politics here? I have been upset with them in the past, but I do want to read Jill's story.  As long as there isn't too much  right-wing  politics or  trying to justify Christian fundamentalism in general (which Jinger seems to have done), I think I would be very interested in it.
