Some reporter really needs to ask Paul Ryan about how exactly he came to know the password for the computer Josh Duggar used to download CSA. I need to know the full story!

I think it wasn’t specifically the password for this computer. It was Josh’s go-to password, and at some point he had some reason to tell Paul Ryan his password for something.

This is not the appeal. That comes later.  This seems to just be their motion for a new trial/vacate verdict, which goes to the same judge, and is a completely different thing. They lose on that, they then have another reason to appeal. Appeals are heard by the Appellate Court, not the trial court judge. Criminal appeals usually take years and it takes months to even prepare an appellate brief.

Forgive my ignorance but doesn’t giving out the password that you use for everything to every Tom, Dick and Harry defeat the point of a password? Literally anyone at this rate could have used Josh’s computer for anything. They could have been ordering groceries on his dime for years, bought illegal substances, hired a hit-man, etc. For someone who is supposed to be computer savvy, isn’t this kinda a stupid mistake?

Maybe not stupid.  Maybe cunning. Maybe it was Smuggar's strategy to share the password in case he was ever found out...which he was.  This way he could say someone else must have dl'ed the CSA....which is what he did. He was very quick to offer up "Did anyone download porn" or whatever he said to the feds.

But how does that even come up? Hey Trump, mailman, amazon driver, my dentist, here’s my password….

I don't understand why you would give anybody your password....  A few years ago a friend from highschool died suddenly.. My best friend didn't have a Faceook Account and asked me whether she could use mine to look at that friends FB page. We couldn't meet up, so I temporarily changed my password to one she coud easily guess (but nobody else would have). She spent an hour or two reading the commments on our other friends page and then rang me when she was done and I changed my password again. And that was my BEST FRIEND who literaly knows everythig about me, andI didn't even give her my original password!

I don't understand.....

I don't even know my own passwords. I use a third party password manager and all my passwords are unique strings of garbage letters, numbers and symbols.

The thought of giving anyone, even my partner, my passwords, gives me the horrors.

Yes, that is correct.  Alice, separately, also related to Bobye Holt per an AMA on Reddit knew what had happened from the Holts and contacted Oprah's team about the molestations.

Oprah's people contacts the authorities in Tonitown as did another person.  It's believed this other person contacted the authorities because of knowledge of the letter.

So Bobye Holt's daughter and an older female relative of Bobye's were the catalysts, indirectly, of the authorities being alerted.  Notice Bobye nor Jim Holt alerted them themselves even though they were the ones who heard the confessions first hand.

I hate the stupid red lines under her name but I refuse to add that ridiculous name to my dictionary to shut spell check up.

That's why the comments she made after the trial made no sense to me. She kept saying they were notifying the authorities who kept doing nothing, but if that's true, why did the letter and have such an impact years later? I wanted to ask which authorities she was contacting, because obviously they weren't the proper ones.

Maybe you can help me. I signed up for a third-party password manager but I don't think I really understand how it works. I was adding different sites I frequent to the third-party password manager, but the upshot was that every time I went to one of those sites, my password was already entered and I just had to push the login button and I was on. So literally anybody who had access to my computer could now get in to any of those sites without entering a password. Obviously I am missing something. Do I have to log into and out of the third-party password manager every single time I get on and off a website? I ended up deleting the whole thing. Could you please talk to me like I'm four and explain exactly how it works because I cannot find anything online that explains it in a way that I can understand. :(

I mean, sure, but I can't tell you how many people there are out there who are super computer savvy but don't have a lick of sense for cybersecurity. It's a running joke with the security experts I see bopping around on twitter.

The other thing is that while it's important to keep sensitive information out of databases and stuff that are vulnerable, the biggest thing protecting anybody is that most people don't want to do crime. My partner points this out all the time -- most locks on doors are easily broken, any window could be smashed, and the biggest protecting factor is that most people don't consider it worth it or even want to break into my apartment. Does it happen to people? Yes. But it's not like my standard issue locks are defeating criminals every night. So, while it's foolish to go around handing out your password, it isn't nearly as dangerous for this kind of situation as the defense would prefer. If only they could count on so many people wanting to frame Josh Duggar.

Also I was a little zooted last night and hearing the news that Paul Ryan's name had come up here made me absolutely lose my mind. Incredibly unpredictable tidbit.

I use lastpass, but I imagine the basics are the same for the others.

I use the browser extension, which is itself protected by my lastpass master password. I log out of the browser extension every time I turn my computer off, so yes, I have to log back in every time I open my computer, but it's one password to remember, rather than hundreds, and it keeps me logged in until I close my browser.

One of the browser extension settings is for it to autofill passwords when I log in to a site, but since I'm usually looking to log into a site when I visit that's not a problem, but you can turn that off in the settings.

The password manager takes the work of remembering and setting secure passwords for you, but yes, if someone accesses your master password and logs in, your security is compromised, so it's in your interest to make your master password as secure as you can and don't store it or share it.

Are you talking about Bobye?  According to the Clint (tech guy testified at trial and still close to the Holts) the letter was found by a friend who told her parents.  Friend's parents shared it with another couple in their circle.  They couple went to the authorities.

So there was one adult couple who heard the news and immediately did the correct thing.  It's sad how much it took to get there.

Bobye said something about talking to the authorities when they were contacted during one of the preliminary investigations, but to my knowledge they didn't do anything outside of their cult of their own volition back then.

Yes, Bobye. Was it on FB? She was saying they kept trying to tell people about what he had done and no one was doing anything or listening.

Her story is super confusing.  She kept referring to some kind of legal action that was allegedly dropped when she and Jim were going to testify, but it's so convoluted I can't follow the story.  She also says they broke off ties with the Duggars years before pics of her and Michelle posing cozily together.

I am very glad she did the right thing this time and told the truth when it mattered.  I truly do think that was a brave act for someone like her and I give her major props for that.

I also think she's trying to rewrite history for the things outside her testimony to make them look better than they were at the time.

I keep meaning to put a timeline together of what they're saying about the reports to authorities, Alice, etc. but my laziness has won out so far.  Maybe I'll tackle it today after I finish the floors and post it for critique and fine tuning if anyone is interested.

I’d be interested as I’m sure she’s rewriting history too

I’d be interested. My impression was that the Holt’s believed that  JB taking Josh to talk to the cop was properly reporting to the authorities. To be fair, JB and Michelle may have felt the same. The cop may very well have convinced JB and Michelle that no charges were needed, and that church camp, counseling by a pastor, and keeping Josh supervised around his sisters was enough. I’m sure JB and Michelle would very much want to believe that, and the cop, himself being later found to be a pedo, likely sympathized with Josh. As far as I recall the worst of the abuse wasn’t disclosed to Bobye by Josh until later, around the time the letter and Oprah show came out? So Bobye could have very well made more reports around that time, but it was already being handled.  I’d love to see a timeline though, I could be completely mixed up.

When I was working as a social worker, I made more CPS reports than I can count, and quite a few police reports. I had a pretty thorough working knowledge of the laws, many, many, many trainings in child abuse /neglect / exploitation. Worked on program development, worked with clients on completing their CPS plans, many of which involved child sexual assault.  And on and on and on.  For 20 years. And I was STILL often surprised sometimes by which cases would result in charges or an open cases - and which wouldn’t. I could easily see a panicked parent or family friend accepting that if no case was opened - and an authority figure had been informed - that’s the way it was supposed to go.

That isn’t meant to excuse anyone involved - particularly the way they treated their daughters after the abuse! Or the incredibly bizarre decision to pursue television with that huge a secret hanging overhead. Or triple down on “purity” etc etc etc

But I can see WHY they’d think they’d done what they needed to do after they told the cop.

That would have been some shocked and disgusted foreign spies who tripped and fell on Josh's gross csam.

Probably Josh thought his password was clever (it wasn’t) and told people about it.  Maybe having passwords that no one else knows goes against the idea of “accountability” and “openness.”

I mean, I know for lots of evangelical couples joint email addresses or social media accounts are like joint bank accounts, so presumably they share passwords with their spouses for “accountability”. It’s not too much of a stretch to think they might share with a trusted mentor I suppose.

So there we have it folks, Paul Ryan and Josh Duggar were accountability partners.

ETA: apparently with this post my rank increased. Now I want “Paul Ryan’s accountability partner” to be my rank.
