There is a good book on this subject, titled "Mistakes Were Made, But Not by Me". It outlines how people go down this road of justification until they've racked up a whole series of increasingly terrible mistakes to cover for the first one.

It's possibIe this is a part of Anna's motivation now, but I believe what really drives her is her desire to continue to be identified as one-half of a Duggar couple and, most importantly, to continue to be Joshie's Girl.

I don't know if it's love for Josh or if she has wrapped her identity so completely in the dream of Duggar coupledom, but she isn't letting go of this. Maybe it's both. I'll bet she doesn't know what drives her either and she is unlikely to ever do the deep soul search to find out.

And each time she doubles down, she is throwing all reason to the side and proving once again that she will continue to put her desires and wants ahead of her children's safety.

I think there is a thread in the Jill section where someone recaps it. I can’t remember the name of the book. Lisa wrote it. In the book the characters make some of the same ridiculously dangerous decisions Jill makes. Though the weirdest part of the book is how the main characters decide to grill chicken outside in the middle of the night during a blizzard. Lisa presented this as a totally normal activity, not some weird decision her fictional characters made. 
 

I do agree with one of the posts in the other thread that Anna is treated with more understanding than someone like Jill because people still view her as that shy, sheltered teen instead of a woman who is now an active part of keeping the abusive system running. These systems where predators thrive depend on people like Anna who are willing to turn a blind eye to what is going on along.

Some random comments in response to points made in previous thread:

1. Speculating about people’s sex lives is generally gross.

2. Why people speculate about other people’s sex lives is (IMO) more interesting than the speculations themselves. (But I shouldn’t speculate on why they do.😉) 

3. Trying to understand is not the same as trying to excuse (and vice versa).

4. As far as the facts go, Josh molested 5 girls (2 or 3 close to his age, 2 or 3 much younger, depending on where you draw the line for “much younger”) probably multiple times, when he was between 12 and 15.    Josh sought adult affairs (and probably had some extra-marital encounters) in his twenties. When exposed, he confessed to a porn addiction and declared that he had been unfaithful.  There was some accusation of abuse by a woman but nothing came of it.  Most recently, he has been proven guilty of downloading and watching CSAM.  Anything else is largely speculation.  From these facts and speculations, most of us have clear ideas about how disgusting Josh is and how much of a danger he poses for kids.

5. Anna has stood by Josh.  None of us understand why.  Speculation is rampant.

My own theory is that acute dislike for Josh and the Duggar parents is a major reason that many people feel sympathy and possibly excuse Anna sometimes. It’s not Anna people care about.  (And that seems fine to me.)

I agree with this: trying to understand is not trying to excuse.

There is no excuse for Anna to prioritize her toxic marriage over the well-being of her children, but there are obviously reasons. I think the “well, she makes garbage choices, because she is just a garbage human” response is too simplistic. I like discussions that explore how fundamentalism and cultlike beliefs influence behavior.

@formergothardite The other thread is closed, so I can’t quote but, wow, center of the earth stuff is next level delusional beliefs. I wonder what it will be like if (when, hopefully) Jill’s kids raised under that exit. Will it just be astonishing to them that they were conditioned that it was normal? It’s not as extreme, but I think of how my classmates and I all watched “Thief in the Night” rapture movie Whenever I think about that I’m like WTF did adults actually believe that? Or does it just pass on to another generation?

So far although the 2 oldest have ‘left home’ they have yet to show any signs of escaping Jill’s delusions. The oldest daughter married Anna’s brother (Josh was the emcee at their wedding) & recently had baby #1, they seem extremely enmeshed in Jill’s traveling circus. The oldest son flunked or dropped out of 2 colleges, has left a job or four, & lives in a travel trailer parked in the yard of the Rod’s converted metal pole barn/home.

Sadly it looks like Tim's job is being recruited via open jobs on his employer's site AND he's on his second or third car accident... I seriously hope he gets away and gets a chance to grow up.

I think you may be on to something here. Let’s say a Christian-ish fundie lite maiden with a backbone of steel comes along and says all the right things in front of TITRod’s parents. He scoops her up, because his options are limited. And then she whips him into shape. He goes along with it because, hey, look at Jill and Dave’s dynamic. Jill makes a big damn deal about making concessions to Dave that are really pretty minor—meanwhile, she runs the whole show.

Interesting. I don’t follow the thread anymore so had no idea he had flunked out of his second college. So Jill’s homeschooling doesn’t seem successful in raising independent learners. Surprised /s

Probably unemployed. If he has a new job, we don’t know about it. Someone noticed a day or two ago that he wasn’t on his former employer’s website any more, and they were advertising his position.

I used to love the J-Rod threads, she’s just SO unashamedly over the top extra. But they move so incredibly fast! The volume feels like when the hugest Duggar scandal hits - but all day, every day. I can’t keep up.

I try to read the J-Rod threads every day, even if I ignore the other families. Otherwise, it is almost impossible to catch up.

I gave up before Nurie announced her pregnancy because I couldn't keep up.  I figure if Jill votes blue or David gets an actual job it'll flood into the rest of FJ or someone will let me know.

Jill posts about Plexus and the thread goes hot. It's literally impossible to stay up to date on those threads unless you frequent them multiple times a day.

Jill's threads have slowed down a *tiny* bit since the trial (new ones every week to 10 days instead of every 5 days).  But there's also a lot of thread drift over there because there's such a large crowd reading them.  and Jill's last Plexus post claimed that it cures skin rashes, so her lies and medical misinformation tend to get a lot of people really pissed off.

He also seems to be making a go at becoming a vlogger, by posting long rambling videos from his RV. In the recent one he apparently said that he is "curt" to women, especially at work, so they won't think he's interested in them flirting with him. 

I think he overestimates what that habitual "smile and nod" thing many women do means.

I’ll admit I read the Jill threads multiple times a day. I also check her Facebook at least once a day to see if she’s posted anything new. However, I’ll skip pages during thread drift or even if the thread is hot due to something she did. After a certain point, the discussion tends to get repetitive and it isn’t necessary to read every word. I do the same with major Duggar events.

Ive said this before, I don’t know how anyone could follow both the J’Rod, and Duggar threads. There just is not enough time in the day. Really, I can only hardcore follow Duggar and MisforMama, and then tangentially the Bates and Maxwells. Other than that, there is no way I could find the time.

Don't give the defense any ideas for the appeal.  It makes more sense than anything they have now.
