She has 16 full time nannys to raise the kids. She is not mothering those kids herself, no one could mother 22 toddlers at the same time really.

No one person can parent 15 minors at one time. Michelle (+JB) didn’t do it, and neither did KJ and Gil. I  these families it does take a village-

This is utterly bizarre. This has to be some kind of mental illness, right? Like some kind of obsessive thing?

This week’s video included Lexi being taken to the ER (urgent care was closed) for an ear infection.  And Warden was coming for a visit - and by visit we mean going to be doing some projects at the Webster home.

Don't they have a pediatrician they can call? Instead of waiting in the ER for hours?

Maybe not during the Pandemic in Florida. A lot of gps won't see people if they're showing signs of COVID, especially if they're unvaxxed.

The issue of calling a pediatrician wasn’t even mentioned.  But what I’ve noticed across YouTube family vloggers in general is the default often seems to be run to the ER or urgent care.  Sometimes warranted, sometimes, like this, doesn’t make sense.

To be honest, on Tuesday this week, I used. A Toledo’s thru my health insurance to have a very quick from my office at work virtual appointment to get my eyes looked at and get an antibiotic eye drop Rx.  Things like ear infections may be covered by this, especially since Alyssa did have the equipment to look into her daughter’s ears.  Granted,  using that sort of thing was available to be because I have health insurance.  Bonus, the copay on that was $0.  (Funny, but they seem to want to keep people out of places like medical waiting rooms in a pandemic.

Not that I want to defend them, but I know my girls' pediatrician isn't currently open on Friday and if there is an issue on a Thursday after hours we have to wait until Monday to deal with it. One of my girls had an ear infection and was crying in pain on Thursday a few weeks ago. I took her to urgent care because I didn't want her feeling that bad all weekend. We have tried in the past to do home remedies, etc. but she still feels like crap with an ear infection.

Per the video John and Alyssa said John took her to urgent care which was closed. I'm not sure which day this happened. He made the decision to take her to the ER.

While I personally think I would have driven to another urgent care place or even a drug store with a clinic, I can imagine that John was probably a little panicked. There was a whole part of the video where he wasn't sure of her birthdate. I don't think he's usually the one doing these things. That's a whole other issue in itself. However, I think he was probably driving around with a crying or moody child who was in pain and wanted to find a solution.

The thing is, they probably waited hours and hours in the ER. A child with an earache is low on the ER triage list--after heart attacks, car accidents, cancer patients needed morphine, etc. It would have been so much faster to go to another urgent care. It would also have been safest, since sitting in an ER waiting room for hours exposes you to Covid and many nasty viruses.

My pediatricians (and most doctors I know) have an answering service and a doctor on call. When my children were small, I'd call the answering service on the weekend and they'd buzz the doctor on call, who'd talk to me and then write me a prescription for an antibiotic. Nowadays, the doc might've sent me a link for a brief virtual appointment. In fact, I zoomed with our pediatrician last year, when my daughter was having some unexplained pain.

I just think it's strange that they'd take the time-consuming route of the ER instead of reaching out to their pediatrician. If they don't have a pediatrician who has someone on call, switch practices! They have four small children, this is might not be the last weekend emergency.

See, this where I think country confusion comes in, because I am not American and here, you would only have a pediatrician if your child is special needs, otherwise you would go to a family doctor and they tend to only work m-f and office hours and after that it is a walk-in clinic or the ER, but I am in Canada, not the US.

Same. Just rock up to the gp. There is a an after hours emergency gp you can go to instead of the er. Er is the last resort. GP’s are open on the weekends.

ERs should be the last resort in the US, too, however, many people do not have any doctor at all and use the ER as their primary care. I don't know if that's the case with the Websters.

Was it after hours? If so, the only options would be Urgent Care and even later in the  evening, the ER. If it’s late, I’d have opted for Tylenol/Advil through the night with an AM Peds appointment.

I am in the process of switching my girls' doctor. His after hours number will only deal with severe issues. I just haven't figured out what that includes yet because apparently vomiting what appears to be blood and running a fever of 105 is not an issue that would get me so much as an email let alone a call back. It is possible that the doctor said go to urgent care. My own personal doctor has done that with me when I had an issue on a Saturday.

I find that they went to the ER strange but I'm assuming John got frustrated and didn't know his options. I am a single mom, but I know my own father would have probably done that with me. He's not a man who has a lot of plan A, B, C...If he didn't get the right thing on the first try he would try the worst solution. Personally, I would have dealt with it if I was Alyssa without asking Lexi who she wanted to take her. John could have dealt with picking up her brother or her brother could have taken an Uber/Lyft.

Alyssa said in the video that she had an hour and a half (I can't remember exactly) before she had to pick up Warren. She said he was due in around 7:40. It was 6:10 at that point. She was being quite passive aggressive in indicating she wanted John to go. She was walking around with Lexi and saying...so I guess you want me to take her so I'll go put on my shoes. She was clearly waiting for him to volunteer.

I'm not in the US, but I guess that sometimes ER is the only open medical service, isn't it? Alyssa clearly has a medical insurance and Maci has had medical appointments, so I doubt the older girls are uncovered. I suppose their pediatrician office was closed or John was too nervous and just went to ER. Ear infection can be extremelly painful and it is possible they thought ER would solve it.

I don't find it weird or a fail. Even if ER wasn't the best option, sometimes parents are too stressed and look for what they think is the easiest/nearest solution.

The only thing that amazes me is that they record everything. A stressed, tired couple with 4 little children, one of them a little baby, the other sick and in pain... Stop recording! It's not the right moment for a video! Stop, breath, focus. But yeah... I'm too old fashioned I think.

Well, it's kind of a violation of Lexi's privacy.

It's a big problem in the US, people who use the ER for primary care. It's wrong for many reasons. It fills the ER with people who do not have an emergency. It is a stress on the doctors and nurses, primarily because many people get angry when they have to wait 8-12 hours. There is a great video on youtube that shows a man complaining about his long wait to be seen for a minor problem. Then you see the medical professionals in the back, rushing to deal with critically ill patients who have just arrived.

Lexi probably sat on a little plastic chair, with a painful ear infection, for at least four hours, probably much more.

When I was a newcomer to Canada we were referred to a paediatrician for a chronic issue. It took me a while to get the appointment so I asked the receptionist what was their procedure if a kid spiked a fever or had another urgent issue. She gave me a look and said “Dr. X is a pediatrician. She doesn’t treat sick kids.” That fresh off the boat feeling was pretty strong then.

Pediatricians in Canada only do well-child visits? That is very different than the US!

They only do special needs. My daughter has had a pediatrician since birth because she as a preemie and then diagnosed with a heart condition. My son almost died at birth, so he got one to monitor him and still one has one at 10 because he is ADHD. My middle child does not have a pediatrician because he does not have need.

Bigger cities do have pediatric emergency rooms or special pediatric clinics. They are like urgent car, but specifically for children. Not every hospital well even have a pediatrician on staff. We have had to go to a hospital an hour away when my daughter was very ill, because that was the nearest children's ward (I live 10 minutes from a hospital but not in a major metropolitan area).

Same in the UK. Your gp does all day to day medical care. You would only be referred to a pediatrician or dermatologist or other specialist if you have a condition which is complex ie not just the usual ailments if that makes sense

IMO, completely agree (on the recording, not that you may be old fashioned. LOL) Also she kept mentioning the time crunch, but then was asking Lexi questions.  Then had to change her outfit and do her hair. I wanted to scream at her JUST GO!
I personally don’t think she was sick enough for the ER (based only on the way she was acting in the vid). Once the urgent care didn’t work out, I probably would’ve given her Tylenol for the pain and tried again in the morning. Antibiotics aren't that fast acting anyway.

I didn't see her story, so this may not apply, but to me, and urgent care facility is very different than an ER.  The ER is part of the hospital and yes, someone with a lower priority health situation can wait hours and hours to be seen.  But an urgent care facility is more like a walk-in clinic, despite the name.  There are urgent care places all over where I live.  We all have primary care doctors in my family, but sometimes you can't get an appointment, or it after hours. We have gone for things like minor sprains, strep throat, etc. I have never waited more than an hour to be seen and have always received excellent care.

Honestly, I’m just glad the poor child got prompt medical attention. Having suffered through many earaches and ear infections in my childhood and teen years I know the pain the poor girl was in. I haven’t watched the story, so don’t know if they were out of pain meds or they weren’t making her feel less miserable. Was the pain stopping her from sleeping? Did she also have a temp or sore throat.

We have documented so many fundies that ignore all sorts of medical issues with kids* that I am glad John took her to the ER.

Maybe there was a note taped to the urgent care door that that was the best place to go at that time as other urgent care places were also closed, maybe she took a turn for the worse in the car and maybe John is an idiot.

Her needs were met and that is the main thing.

* was it Emily from Emily and Dna who didn’t realise that her sick kid was unconscious and not just sleeping while she carried on filming something? We know that a smashed jaw wasn’t enough to keep the poor Duggar kid in bed less than 24 hours after falling into the orchestra pit. There are many, many more that my brain can’t link to specific families followed here until the caffeine kicks in. Some ignored minor things, some major things. I mean there are the fundies on the extreme end of the scale who don’t do medical care at all and try to pray any illness and accident away. Kids have died. So he went to the ER instead of their normal doctor 🙄

TL;DR John got medical care for his unwell daughter. Good!

Skipped a word that was kinda vital for context. Still waiting for caffeine to start working

Good News, Guys…according to today’s IG, AW is doing a full deep clean of her house, and many loads of laundry. But have no fear, she has full face and eye makeup in place. I fear for these woman as they age.
