Since Jessa always says "Ivy Jane" will she call, the baby Fern Elli? She wouldn't, would she?

That part's not unusual, no, if he's under a year. Current wisdom is to only start offering small amounts of water at meals once they're on solids.

@VineHeart137, seriously? Formula should be illegal? Isn't she in for a shock if she has another and can't produce enough milk.

Yeah, I don't think water was recommended before 1? Except maybe in extreme heat.

And with formula, you are supposed to boil the water (and let it cool) or used bottled water.

Oh, I hope beyond hope she names a future girl Hyacinth! (Any Keeping Up Appearances fans here?)

I think Sheridan Seewald would be a nice name.

Next time I give a fake name, it's gonna be Rhubarb.  Rhubarb Pie, or Miss Pie if you're nasty.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one that thought of Tiktok Fern. She pops up on my FYP sometimes and she doesn't even believe in toothpaste. ? When Jessa said "Baby Fern..." I think I twitched. I actually like the name or I did anyway, before the Tiktoker. I wonder if she will saying anything about Jessa using it.

Now I'm trying to decide who I'd rather have as a parent - Jessa or Alice from Tiktok. Either one sounds terrifying.

Yeah I wouldn't really blink at any of this. She mostly came under fire for saying that using a crib is abusive, as is making your baby sleep on a schedule (her baby sleeps on a mattress on the floor) and for saying formula should be illegal. Oh and unsurprisingly, she's anti-vax.

I would have a really hard time not punching her. Without special, amino acid based formula my daughter would be dead. People who get high and mighty about things like this have no idea what it’s like in less than ideal circumstances.
I never wanted to sleep train either but after 19 months of not getting enough sleep, I am having to let my girl jump up and down, yell, throw her bottle and hit the side of the crib for 20 minutes. I’m exhausted and her paediatrician told me that I needed to clamp down a bit more. Discipline is not my forté.

Actually, small amounts of water are fine to give at 6+ months (though not necessary until 1). The recommendation regarding which kind of water to use will vary based on location and the quality of tab water where you are. Our pediatrician told us our tab water was completely safe to use right from the start.

On topic, I don’t think Fern Elliana Seewald flows very nicely, but it’s an okay name in my book. While I’m glad they chose to go the hospital route this time, I am curious what made them come to their senses. Did they elaborate on what prompted this decision at all?

Part 3 of the birth video is up.  Lots of shots of the baby and the other kids with the baby.

Best moment - Ben and Jessa are explaining to the kids that Fern came out of Mommy's tummy. Spurgeon - "Then why is your tummy so big still?"

So the boys get strong theologian names, while the girls get bendable, pliable plant names. Lovely. I would so much rather have seen a Deborah, Esther, Lydia, Phoebe, or even (maybe/maybe not) Priscilla.

I pointed this out in one of the Baby Name threads a few months ago.  I won’t be shocked if the next thread title contains some variation on “Plants & Preachers”, which is at least a more creative name theme than just J names.

As I said upthread I know a couple of Ferns - both in their 30s (England). There are also a couple of TV presenters here called Fern, one in her 50s and one I would guess to be late 30s.

I remember a British TV host named Fearne Cotton; spelled differently but still pronounced as “Fern”.

They named her after Dr. Fern Hunt, noted mathematician.

Oh, wait, silly me, Dr. Hunt got an education and pursued something other than mass reproduction, never mind.

@Snowless, plants and preachers is great!

I still think that Jessa wanted to use Elliot as Spurgeon's first name instead of the middle. It would have fit better with his brother Henry's name for sure.

I love nature names but I just can't picture yelling Ivy & Fern at a playground, and I hate when boys get traditional names while their sisters don't.

Their kids are all adorable in the videos.

Was looking on another snark site and there is a picture taken from part 3 of Jessa’s video and there is a picture of Jana sitting next to Ben’s mother and on Jana’s left side is Stephen Wissmam. They are all eating and they are sitting closely (just like normal people). It appears that they really are dating, courting, in a relationship or even engaged or married, who knows. It is refreshing that she is finally the one getting to date even if they are not announcing.

In my area at least there is a good informal milk donor program called human milk 4 human babies. It's at least nationwide in the USA and may be worldwide. My state group is fairly active and as an over producer I was thrilled to donate extra milk to moms in need. Nobody wants it now because I had my covid vaccine, but I donated about 500oz to area babies. I disclosed medications and would have shared my results from any pregnancy disease testing if asked.

I like to believe I come from a long line of wet nurses.

Since Jessa didn't edit that out (ans it was filmed in the first place), do we think an announcement is coming soon?

Maybe Jana's revenge for the pink bridesmaid dresses will be making Jessa be a bridesmaid newly post-partum lol

is that all plastic cutlery and plates? Honestly is there a reason these guys don't have normal 're-useable' plates? or is it just the one thing where the girls won and thus no dishes?

When I was doing my rotation on the maternity ward one of the best things I got to do was to spoonfeed water to the newborn babies of the breastfeeding mums. We used the kind of plastic spoons that are used to feed babies babyfood to be able to control the amount of water and avoid nipple confusion. This happened to be during two very hot weeks in the summer, and as it took two or three days for most mums to produce enough milk to properly hydrate their babies, they would get some additional water from us (from what I understood, this also helped prevent jaundice, but I am not specialised in neonatal care!). As this was in the hospital, we didn't use tap water but the hot water out of the big coffee machine after letting it cool down of course.

@GuineaPigCourtship, my maternal grandmother famously helped nurse an additional 4 babies in her village after giving birth to my aunt and mum respectively; she produced way more milk than her own babies could drink. This was in the mid 1950s/early 1960s and formula wasn't nearly as good then as it is now; same for storage options for extracted breastmilk of course. Thank you for mentioning human milk 4 human babies; I hadn't heard of them and there actually is a german FB page. Donating breastmilk seems to be really complicated here; the closest hospital to me feeding breastmilk to their NICU babies only accepts donations from other mums who currently have babies in the NICU. I'll be interested to see how my supply is (once we have a baby, whenever that may be); my mother didn't inherit grandma's oversupply.

When I first heard Spurgeon’s name I was sure he would go by Elliot. I had never heard of anyone named Spurgeon. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Is Jessa homeschooling? At least then he won’t be teased in school because of his name. I only follow Jessa at Insta, not her YouTube, but I can’t recall her talking about homeschooling the kids. Isn’t Spurgeon about the same age as Allie Webster? Alyssa sure is homeschooling her kids from a young age.

Am I the only one who is wondering why only two people have drinks?  This is so odd to me.  I don't sit down to any meal w/o something to drink.  One of my first thoughts was "Poor Stephen...he had to bring his own water..."

Of course she is! Well, it's not clear if she does it herself or it is Ben's chore. They are 100% pro homeschool.

I think Spurge is younger than Allie W. Allie is 6.

Yes. Who sets the table without putting glasses and water on it? Is Jana eating spaguetti without a drink?

They always talked about their industrial dishwashers so I don’t understand why you’d need paper/plastic dishes. It’s not that hard to load and unload a dishwasher and makes for a great chore for a middle aged kid learning responsibility. The fact they have so little kids and STILL don’t use real dishes is astounding to me.

Although, let’s be honest here, it’s not like the Duggars care about the carbon footprint AT ALL.

It looks like take out food. Look at the rectangular cardboard containers.

My guess is that Ben’s pastor job has health insurance, and they previously didn’t have it or had a cheap plan that had a big copay or no coverage for delivery.  That’s why Jessa went to the hospital this time. Also, the Duggars are less into home birth now, with only Anna not having delivered in a hospital.
