Debi Pearl's new book - Create a Better Brain

thoughtful

Recommended Posts

Debi Pearl has a new book out, the subject of which may be the height of irony:

https://www.amazon.com/Create-Better-Brain-through-Neuroplasticity/dp/1616441135

Jill Rodrigues is all excited, because Debi mentions Janessa.

Quote

Be amazed as you learn how music and physical activity causes the brain to actually increase in volume. On the flip side, we will examine activities and mindsets that will cause damage to the brain

Considering what you and your nasty husband are known for, Debi, I shudder to think what that means.

Thanks to @Ms. Squishels for alerting me to the existence of this medical tome, and Jill's excitement about it.

This might be saleable if any of the Pearls had done anything even remotely intellectual with their lives.  :pb_rollseyes:

Here's the blurb about it on the NGJ site:

https://nogreaterjoy.org/articles/coming-soon-august-2019/?topic_slug=art-of-child-training

Quote

Do you want to raise your IQ or that of your child?

Wish your children were not so silly, selfish, or lazy?

Would you like to utilize the one area of training that will cause your child’s brain to be much better in all areas?

Do you know someone who has had a stroke or has developed Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease? Neuroplasticity can help.

Do you want help overcoming your Prozac, over-eating, or over-spending habit?

Do you live in a fog, always exhausted, and feel like you are 20 years older than you are? Find out what to do in chapter 8.

Is your husband addicted to porn but says he can’t help it? Has he lost his manly interest in you? YEEK, he needs you to read this book to him!

Wow, sounds like a whole new focus! /sarcasm.

I think her interest was sparked (well, besides being sparked by wanting to make money and be An Authority) by the strokes Mike had last year, among other things.

Advanced reader reviews - the first is from Kim Plath, the other seems SEVERELY familiar in style:

Quote

Create a Better Brain through Neuroplasticity is a sage's wisdom melded with cutting edge science, yet reads like a novel. THE game changer for how we think and live! --Dr. Kim Plath, ND

Every parent that wants to give their child the best advantage in life NEEDS to read this book! I didn't realize how much my childrens' brains were being formed by simple, everyday activities. And now I know which activities they need to grow a BIG brain! --Advance Reader Review

Thanks to @wallysmommy for calling my attention to them.

Between her new book, the Botkins reentering the speaker circuit, and Zsu Anderson’s books/vlogs spree, the conclusion is clearly that the craziest fundies have entered into an unofficial Most Ironic Expert race. Can’t wait to see who wins. :banana-rainbow:

ETA: Jill Duggar’s recipe blog deserves a mention here, too.

Oh, FFS! :angry-fire: This, from the same Pearls who recommend hitting children with plumbing line??

Google "effect of corporal punishment on IQ."

The stupidity, it burns.

"Wish your children were not so silly, selfish, or lazy?"

Who would wish that their child wasn't silly?! If they mean silly as to mean foolish, that's one thing, but usually now when referring to a person it just means goofy in a good way. While children need to be taught that there's a time for work and a time for play, one of the absolute best things about kids is the silly antics they get into while playing--oftentimes, creating a very bright child in the process. But, I know how a lot of these folks feel about playtime. ?

Create a better brain? The Pearls need to start with themselves.

If these people gave a damn about a child’s IQ they would not mandate blanket training amongst other things. Fuck the Pearls. If there is a hell, I hope they’re first in line.

To the first... Taking an antidepressant is NOT a bad habit for fucks sake. And even the over eating thing you know in their minds is taken to the nth degree ignoring physiological reasons for it to happen.

To the second... Do they really think porn rots the brain and makes someone unable to read for themself? Or is it that unless you read it to him he won't read it? In that case, what pray tell is someone supposed to do with an unwilling recipient of this blessed knowledge? Put him in restraints???

What the actual fuck?!??!?

Let me guess. The TL;DR here is "wash brain often and vigorously."

I hope Debi Pearl gets sued for plagiarism.  There are books aplenty about this; just go to Amazon and enter "neuroplasticity" in the search bar.

Brilliant.

I wonder if she'll use the book to flog her Plexus sales.  One of the daughters started selling it this past year and Debi was gushing over how fabulous it made her feel.  I suspect that someone will eventually assay Plexus and discover the active ingredients are B12, Pepto Bismal and meth.

I dunno, I think it might rot some peoples brains. I've see enough sex pests with brain rot.

My brain went to "buy Debi's book and Mike Cernovich's vitamins for a big and smooth brain."

There is more to plagiarism than writing about the same thing a bazillion others are writing. If this were not the case, most writers would be plagiarists.

oh, very true.  I'll just be looking for references and footnotes if I ever come across her book.

Depending, it could  be beneficial to  anti-science/pig ignorant fundies who would not encounter this information any other way.

I'm also insanely curious to know if the Pearls are on MediCare or get social security.

You could substitute Plexus, Essential Oils, or even Plumbing Line for Neuroplasticity throughout Debi's blurb.  She's just jumped on the latest bandwagon.   It is rather amusing to see a Fundie credit ebil scientists for anything though.  And BTW, Debi Pearl, this theory far predates the 1970s.  Pierre Paul Broca figured out that aphasia had to do with brain damage back in the 1860s.   See Broca's Area.

This.  Michael Pearl's brain had to remap after strokes. So Debi is now a degreed neuroplasticiologist.

As soon as I saw this in the recently commented on threads I just thought “ugh”, as well as “create a better brain? Yeah, you do that by NOT following the Pearls’ advice to beat the crap out of your children”.

The Pearls are godawful.

Exactly! In fact my neighbor and I encouraged our kids to be silly last night and we joined in! 2 kids had a dance they wanted to teach us so 2 kids taught 3 more kids and 2 adults this silly dance and we all did it and practiced in the driveway for all the neighbors to see!

Silly is good you (Debi) nitwit!

Well, she's also a great nutritionist, physician, botanist, and who knows what else, all with barely a high school education.

Does she hit Mike with a plumbing line if he doesn't respond appropriately to post-stroke therapy measures?

Shoshanna & her husband James are the big Plexus pushers & money makers. Presumably, Debi & Shalom (and maybe Gabe's new wife) are in their downline. You have to wonder how that plays out in family dynamics, not that they're the only ones in that situation.

OFFS. Some Most of my family's best memories are of silliness! Silliness breeds, among other things, creativity and improvisation skills. I would pit my kids' IQ test scores (which, speaking of silliness, IQ tests are right up there, but people seem to place importance on them) against those of any of our SOTDRT fundies.

Oooh, if there's any actual real info in this book, hopefully Lori Alexander will read it! Since Debi "spanked her with her words" with one of her other books, maybe this one will help Lori to get her small handful of brain cells wired back together in a semi-functional manner!

Although Lori, and some other fundies, seem to think intelligence is a big negative. Lori is willfully proud of how stupid she is, and brags about how little she learned in college. I can't see some of them being very interested in raising their IQ. And Jill better be especially careful - raise her kids' IQs too much and they might stop blindly following along with whatever she wants from them!

Although I can see how this sort of information might be useful to help Janessa, and filtering the science through the Godly layperson lens of Debi Pearl might possibly make it more understandable and palatable for Jill. I'm curious about how much real truthful information is in here, and whether she relates it correctly or tries to spin it to be something Godly.

Gah!  No, I seriously doubt that there is any real information in this book.   It will turn into Godly pseudo-scientific woo-woo of the worst kind through the Pearl filter.

"Speak roughly to your little child,
And beat him when he sneezes:
He only does it to annoy,
Because he knows it teases."

My guess is that Jill R. will (apparently has) read this book, and will reject all proper and professional cognitive behavioral therapies for Janessa.  She will think she can do it all herself and continue to use Pearl methods on all her children.  Because she now knows ALL about it because Debi Pearl wrote a book about Godly Neuroplasticity and Pearl methods are wonderful anyway.

To make any sense at all, Debi Pearl would have to accept that neuroplasticity works both ways and that beating children into "submission" has a very detrimental effect on cognition.  And that has been studied and proven by science too, Debi, you ignorant and uneducated twit.

I'm not holding my breath waiting for a Pearl to write "I Kissed Spanking Goodbye."

That’s essentially how I picture Jill R. reading about (and thoroughly understanding) neuroplasticity:
