Chelsy and John Maxwell 3: Will There Be a Welcome Home Party?

Good on her for sewing her dress, I loved the floral wreath (and I think the baby's breath looked wintry enough), I agree that wreaths would have been a bit much on the bridesmaids...I wish I could ask the makeup artist what she was thinking when she chose that kinda corpsey pink-brown for Chelsy's lip color. She would have looked lovely with a red or a softer, redder-toned pink (not that she didn't look lovely otherwise).

okay can someone tell me why Mary is called Scary Mary? I get the PSarah reference but am not up enough on Maxwell to get the Scary Mary thing.

It's that manic, wide-eyed expression she makes when posing for a "candid" shot. It's kind of like how many in her age group do duck lips or muppet mouths--no one knows why, it's not flattering and it's not natural. Her normal everyday facial expression is nothing like that.

Correct.  Its the forced smile and eyes that always creep me out.

I've always assumed it was the combination of scary eyes and little girl voice.

Yup.  And the smile..

John was buying her jewelry in South America right after they started dating?  Do the Maxwells wear much jewelry?   And aren’t they of the type that forbids too much emotional bonding prior to engagement? Buying a beautiful necklace in a newly dating relationship has got to be against one or two of Steve’s rules.

I really feel half of Chelsy’s blog posts are just f.u. To Steve.  She has to know they tried very hard to not publicly release John was in South America, much less in South America buying necklaces for his new girlfriend.

Chelsy posted about their first look. John gave her a rose which I thought was nice. They were pretty touchy in those!

Something that stood out was that John was wearing his wedding band...When this was before the ceremony. Maybe it was to make the pictures have more of a wedding feel? Idk

they really looked like they wanted to kiss during the first look pictures. I want to think they actually did and that's why this picture is cut off. :pb_wink:

I love how Judgy Chelsy and Stud John have their hands all over each other.  I hope Coward Steve shit his panties.

I will say these two look seriously into each other, which is surprising for a Maxwell. I am glad that John is at least giving into some of his feelings (even if they didn't kiss before they said I do). At least he is being handsy an such. :D

In the comments Chels explains that they put their wedding bands on for the pictures.  I also like if there were any parents (ie chaperones) or anyone else in the room other than the photog, they aren't shown.

I don't like "first look" pictures at all, nor the practice of it.  There's nothing like the groom waiting for his bride to walk up the aisle, and seeing him light up in awe at how beautiful his love looks.

I think you can do both. Joe and Kendra Duggar had a first look and he still bawled like hell when she walked down the aisle.

I like the kinda first look pictures where the photographer is hiding or really far away so the couple can have a slightly intimate moment.

I think each couple should do whatever they want. If I ever get married, I think I would like to walk up the aisle with my hypothetical fiance. I don't really like the idea of revealing myself to him like I'm a gift, and I definitely don't like the idea of someone else walking me to him to 'give me away'. But that's totally personal preference on my part, and I have absolutely no issue with other people doing those things. I don't think they're wrong, just wrong for me.

Isn’t that the traditional way in much of Europe? I would have liked to do that at my two weddings, but would rather have died than hurt my father’s feelings.

When I was little and told my mother I wanted to marry my father, she told me, “No—when you get married, Daddy will give you away,” and I had a meltdown: My own father, getting rid of me? When I got married, I made sure that the newspaper announcement read, “The bride was escorted to the altar by her father” instead of “was given in marriage” (the “Who gives this woman to be married?” isn’t part of the Catholic ceremony anyway).  For good measure, I did the same in my daughter’s wedding announcement. (My dad walked her down the aisle, as her father had died several years earlier.)

And Chelsy posted yet again. This time about the bridal party outfits. I guess she finally found some time to blog.

This made me chuckle given how her now younger SILs (aka S/A/M) often look with their overly layered or hiding under jackets/puffy vests have been described and make me wonder what her new FIL thinks.

At the end of the day, the dress I chose for my bridesmaids was this Beachcoco dress in teal blue. I was a little worried about how it would look to have a cami underneath-I really was not interested in a frumpy look and I was pretty concerned about that. I realized that a white cami was not an option-it would stick out to much and just look weird. However, I realized that if I had grey/silver necklaces that had a lot of detail around the neckline, it would layer well on the cami and the necklace would be the focal point, not the camisole neckline underneath. I found grey camisoles at Walmart for $1.64 each!

I wish they'd taken the groomsmen's pants and vests to be tailored.

It's kind of hilarious that she ultimately picked a maternity dress. She's right that it's practical, thought. I'm sure other than Sarah, Anna and Mary, it'll get a lot of use.

"I was a little worried about how it would look to have a cami underneath-I really was not interested in a frumpy look and I was pretty concerned about that."

Translation: I really wanted to do these dresses without a cami, but the  hint of cleavage would have caused half the congregation (not just Steve, but her Mennonite family as well) to faint from shock.

She should have gone with a higher quality cami- the material on the one chosen does not mesh well with the dress.

I wouldn’t ever get married in a church. I’d feel too hypocritical as an atheist. Plus, as someone who hates being the centre of attention, walking down an aisle where the whole point is that everyone’s watching you is my idea of pure hell.

i have those same Walmart cami's in a rainbow of colors, and yes, you get what you pay for; and i'd be hard-pressed to wear one with a formal outfit if it's going to show.  on the other hand, if Chelsy paid for all of them herself, i can see why she went for low-cost.  but there again, that's another result of such a short engagement.  if she had more time, she could have ordered something online in a different fabric and had each bridesmaid help with the cost.

Notice how all the Maxwells camis cover more than the Bontragers.

Certainly true for the Daughters of Steve and Anna Marie, but I think Mel and Elissa brazenly showed off more skin than Steve would allow.  Hopefully, their headships approved.

I hope that Mary can sneak in some sewing if she's allowed to spend time with  spy on Chelsy.

It’s mentioned either on Chelsy’s or the Bontrager’s blog that he does irrigation work in South America.

Whether he does it for business or religion or both, at least it's something useful. He isn't handing out lollipops or preaching sermons in Spanglish.
