There's a serious thing about these kind of ludicrous costumes, and the giant bows etc.  There's a load of research that shows that baby girls are discouraged from being as active as baby boys and baby girls' physical abilities underestimated compared to the boys (one example: https://www.newsweek.com/why-parents-may-cause-gender-differences-kids-79501).

But putting a baby girl into 10 yards of ruffles, or expecting her to keep a giant bow/insane bonnet on her head means that from babyhood, girls are physically and behaviorally discouraged from being active, and that kind of thing will follow her for life, especially if she's being raised in the Pomeroy style, where she's put in clothes that she has to be careful about and can't play in.  She will become more passive, less likely to take exercise, more frustrated as she won't have outlets for her natural energy.

Of course, if the average FJer pops a bow on her daughter's head for a picture, and laughs as her baby rips it off, that's fine - in the same way as if she's putting a cowboy hat on her baby.  But thinking one can dress a baby as an elaborate doll is ridiculous, and ends up with Pomeroy style "bow training", because it's more important the the baby is a decorative item than it is that she can explore her world with her hands/roll around - and most importantly, that she's not physically hurt.  "Bow training" with swatting a baby to stop her pulling off her bow is even worse than blanket training, to me (and that's egregious enough) because it's not even about "I can't watch 5 kids under 5 unless I hurt them so they are still", it's hurting a baby just so it looks "good".

It makes sense to me. I have boys and they don’t care much about clothing as long as it’s comfortable. Most boys I see in their school are wearing comfortable clothing and shoes. They can easily move around and play. If I had girls, I would dress them the same way. I would put them in comfortable and practical clothing. Luckily it seems a lot of moms feel the same way and I see lots of little girls wearing comfortable clothing on the playground.

Snark aside, a lot of those little baby girls seem to be wearing necklaces purely for decoration.  I have never parented, but isn't this SUPER dangerous?  Why would parents DO this?  That little Willa in her W necklace, and little Mary look like they're wearing a strangulation AND a choking hazard at the same time

These outfits are so crazy, especially since you can get a lot of really cute baby clothes that use soft fabrics and look quite comfortable. I spend way too much time obsessing over my son's clothes. He has a fairly extensive wardrobe. But 99% of his clothes are completely play friendly and he still looks adorable in them. He's only two so I'm hoping I have a little more time before he starts expressing opinions on what he wears and I have to relinquish control. Luckily, we both have a fondness for dinosaurs, lol. Although maybe he will be like his dad and be happy to have someone tell him what to wear rather than figuring it out for himself.

For girls, there are also a lot of lovely play clothes out there including dresses that would be comfortable and appropriate for every day life. I used to wear dresses a lot as a kid (by choice) but I only would wear ones that were comfortable and not itchy so that's what my mom bought. I feel so bad for these kids and my scalp hurts for those girls and their crazy hairstyles.

Yes, it really is a "Train up a child" sleep sack.  What next, a cutesy onsie with a design of a paddle and a cane?

I thought FJ had inured me to Fundy WTFery, but I am genuinely shocked.

ETA @HarryPotterFan got there first.  I think my brain seized up, and I lost some time just going WHAAAATTTTTTT???

It’s just so messed up up put your baby in an outfit that promotes child abuse. Like the the baby is literally wearing clothing that advertises, “my parents will beat me the soon as I learn to roll over”

Those are SO expensive. SO EXPENSIVE. And they're not safe, either: she's billing the gowns as "coming home outfits" but your standard car seat straps need to fit snugly between a baby's legs. So what, you're going to ruck up the gown so you can secure the straps, or just not belt them in?

(Also massively ugly, and massively gender-stereotyping. I like the madras-style fabrics and some of the woodland prints, but I consider them unisex.)

Some of those pictures are giving me a serious case of heebie-jeebies!  The only one I can kind of see is the christening gown because those are generally worn for a very short period of time.  I am not a big fan of bows, but that's just my opinion.  I did put a stretchy headband on my daughter once as a baby and it had a bow - I think it was for a picture.  She wore it for all of 2 minutes and that was about it.  Too much of a strangulation possibility.  She did have a bonnet as part of her christening outfit but we forgot to put it on her for the ceremony!

Some folks need to find a hobby. Good grief!

My kids lived in sleepers or onesies forever! Had one who would happily run around naked. I think he didn't wear more than a diaper until he was a couple of months old (it was summer, it was hot and the house we lived in didn't have a/c).

The Proverbs verse the fundies use as an excuse to "train" their children is interpreted ALL WRONG by those idiots. According to what I've read from actual scholars, what it means is to guide the child in the "way they should go", meaning their likes, dislikes, talents, abilities and desires. Provide them what they need to grow into the person they were made to be. That's how I got a graphic designer/computer engineer type, a business type and an electrician. Their interests were fostered and supported. Yeah they about drove me to a nervous breakdown, but, they're REALLY interesting people! #1 child has a 1 hour layover here and wants to meet me for coffee at the airport. In the Pleistocene (late ‘70s), my baby spent most of her time in cuddly cotton knit jumpsuits—the kind of thing young moms these days consider to be pajamas. There was less of a distinction back then between “home” and “going out” outfits for babies in their first few months.

That over-the-top ruffles’n’buttons shit horrifies me. I want ALL babies to be in safe and comfortable clothing, the kind that doesn’t restrict their mobility. And I am disgusted by seeing the popularity of necklaces and headbands on babies—obvious strangulation hazards!

When I was a little girl I would have LOVED dressing the Pomeroy girls do. In fact-- I did. I was an odd little duck (who am I kidding, still am) and I loved to be in pretty dresses and shoes (no knee socks for me though-- pantyhose!) and to have my hair curly. I was absolutely OFFENDED that on gym day I had to wear pants and sneakers all day (we didn't start changing for gym class until middle school).

That said:

- It was my choice to dress that way.

- There was only one of me, and I picked out my own outfits and even fixed my own hair. My mother didn't ccoordinate matching outfits for multiple children every day, and THEN do hot pin rollers for each child.

- While I always wanted the prettiest dress at the store, we shopped at places like the Bon-Ton (does that even exist anymore?0, JC Penny, and Boscov's; and Mom was always good at finding markdowns and deals (and now I am, too!).

The difference I'm getting at is that my Pomeroy-style dressing was my own choice that my Mom just let me do. I think the girls look absolutely precious, but A) it's clearly their mother's idea, and B) holy crap I can't imagine the hassle of getting all three kids like that.

All right, now that you all know I was a weird-ass kid, I'll sign off for now.

@PopRox, not weird at all! When my daughter was little, I was a huge fan of practical clothes: overalls, tee shirts, sweatshirts, sneakers—but wound up with a child who liked looking pretty. She wasn’t as dedicated as you were, but it was obvious we had different tastes. (I had no objection to the more feminine clothes, and did make her many special occasion dresses.)

Yes! Can't upvote this enough! If pretty sure God wouldn't be all about child abuse and causing fear in the hearts of your children. These people act like they don't know/can't understand the Bible because not only do they not get what modesty is, they don't seem to get that you're actually supposed to care for your children in an adequate way, not just beat the crap out of them and make sure they stay silent. For these people, children are a status symbol and little dolls to show off to the world. Children exist for their amusement, to be seen and not heard, to be exploited and used. Forget all that love and kindness bullshit. For these fundies, children are a commodity to be used and exploited at their parent's will.

There were times I didn't want to see OR hear my kids...umm...imagine living with 3 different versions of me! They've grown into really cool adults, but man...they're still 3 versions of me. I feel sorry for their spouses/so's.

My kids weren't "status symbols", they were more like happy accidents (only 1 of the 3 was an on purpose baby). And there were times they were utter embarrassments. Imagine, teen aged, drama queen girl and back to school shopping. Then there were the ones who had to be convinced that clean and without holes was a good idea.

I had neither the time nor the patience to put that much effort into dressing my kids like the Pomeroy girls. But, then again, I was doing the "get the kids out the door to school on time" or "get the kids pulled together before I left for work" thing.
