Yes, I believe hysterical pregnancies are often related to other problems, but I could be wrong.  Alexandra's are more documented, as they were more recent and we knew more about how things worked at the time.

No, they are the same. Hysterical is used less because the word has negative connotations. Hysteria was an old diagnosis used for women that weren't completely and totally happy with their highly circumscribed lives as a means to dismiss their feelings.

I think some people think an early miscarriage (you know the women who pee on the stick a week before their period and get a WEAK ++ and are 2 days late and then get their period, I've heard them call that a false pregnancy.  I knew/know a woman who had an hysterical pregnancy, it only lasted 3 month she's NUTS, she didn't want to be pregnant but had convinced herself she was, swollen boobs, she started getting a small bump the whole nine yards.  She was had ONE false positive on a cheap ass generic dollar general pregnancy tests and the rest, even the one at the doctors office was negative, but nope, she was pregnant.  Never mind that she had had her tubes tied, hubby had had a vasectomy, she made him wear condoms during her fertile time AND she was 49. I was like bitch you are in menopause, you ain't pregnant. Nope wasn't until she was what she considered to be 10 weeks along her OB/GYN finally did an u/s and NOTHING was there, she did over the tummy and up the vag, nothing there.  She was admitted for a 48 hour psych evail but only  had to stay for 36 hours before they realized she was just so uptight that she's made herself sick.  She refuses therapy but will take meds.  The meds make her slightly less edgy but still totally annoying.  Thankfully I don't talk to her too much anymore, she's pissed at me for being an ebil libeural and all that.

I hope that fake pregnancy that lasted more than year, never resulted in an actual offspring.  That would have been a whole lotta crazy for a baby to be born into.  ( Please don't read that as me wishing for a miscarriage, but it was obvious to all that she was not really pregnant.  They kept the charade going for close to 2 years I think before they went dark.

An early miscarriage that only gets far enough along for a pee test (or blood test) but not an ultrasound is called a chemical pregnancy, not a false pregnancy.

I sometimes wonder about things like that hundreds of years ago. People had no concept of what cancer actually was. It was just an unexplainable illness. For some illnesses that gave no physical indications people just randomly died for no reason. If your abdomen swelled because of cancer the only reasonable explanation they had to go to was pregnancy. It really is no wonder that cultures turned to religion because it gave them comfort and a reason for these unexplainable deaths.

Please bear with me while I put on my Degreed History Professional hat (tm) for a moment...

Cancer and cancerous tumours and the like have been known since the time of Ancient Egypt, and probably before. Pretty sure the term 'cancer' itself comes from Hippocrates, who lived around 400 BC. Doctors in western Europe definitely knew what cancer was by the 1500s, and even had surgical techniques to attempt to remove it and various (mostly terrible) medical techniques to attempt to treat it without surgery. Of course, diagnosis was much more difficult, and there was much greater ignorance amongst the general population and the medical professions, so it was a lot more common for it to go undetected, or for it to be mistaken for something else. But they did know what cancer was.

People 500 years ago were not nearly as ignorant as some of us believe. They were not monosyllabic cavemen who had to explain everything away using religion. They were actually pretty advanced, and just as intelligent as you and I. It's somewhat amazing what they could do without the modern technology that we'd be lost without!
