A reminder that Cross Church pastor Ronnie Floyd is a Member of President Trump's Evangelical Council

[this council, unlike the infrastructure, business & arts councils, doesn't seem to have the moral courage to resign]:

I can definitely see how Jill and Derek would think Izzy is being manipulative. Their religion revolves around original sin. Everyone is born inherently sinful. They can look at their precious newborn and see sin. They can see their precious two year old attempting to express love for his parents and see sin. When my two year old screams and throws a fit because I won't let her lick the toilet seat :my_rolleyes: I can see it's because she's two, doesn't understand germ theory, and isn't good at processing emotions yet. Derek and Jill would see it as being deliberately evil.

Thank you, I did not know that. No wonder the Dillards have found a home there. How utterly despicable.

I think Derick's 'clever' pun is rather benign. At least he is not suggesting the eclips has apocalyptic significance. Or that it is a warning sign for the US to turn away from immorality. I know, today my glass is half full:my_biggrin:

I agree, but the day is young.  He still has plenty of time to shove his foot in his mouth.

Yeah, it's no mystery where Derick got his charm. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Ironic how nobody had trouble trusting science when it predicted there will be an eclipse today... :my_angel:

@Kleine Vampirin Holy Cow! That is just so impressively gobsmackingly :wow:

She doesn't get any better with age, does she?

I can see where Derrick gets his people skills from.

Isn't the concept of hell actually somewhat recent in the history of religion?  I thought that biblical scholars ( real ones that like actually went through formal education) state that support for the type of hell most envision now, is not strong in the bible.  Instead it was a desciption of the suffering when you are separated from the Holy Spirit, or something. I probably am not saying this correctly, but I feel like I have read this recently, possibly on FJ.

While I really dislike Cathy's eternally burning sentiment,  I will say her post was better constructed than her son's.  It is clear to me, however,  that Cathy feels the need to publicly support Derick on social media and likely felt very protective of him when he was being criticized of the Jazz thing and other times.

I understand that losing a husband suddenly, and then facing her own frightening illness can mess with a person.  Add to that the fact that her son has been somewhat of a lightning rod for controversy and I think we are seeing a very rigid and protective side of Cathy.

I never will understand using fear to force religion.  If I were a goddess, I would want my flock to come to me of their own free will and not out of fear.  I think reigning with fear as religious leaders have done since the beginning of religions is a result of a lack of confidence in the tenets of the faith to begin with.  If the religious leaders of the time, have confidence in the religion/faith,  they won't need to construct a culture of fear and damnation to draw believers.  The truths of that faith should be self-evident so that people will choose to follow.

For me, it is like parenting.  I don't want a child to behave well out of fear towards me.  I want them to behave well because they understand and choose to behave well.  True, a toddler won't be able to understand, but it is my job as parent to teach, To give and to engender respect, to discipline instead of punish, to allow natural consequences to occur ( when safe), so that the child learns and internalizes a conscience and internal locus of control.  Behaving out of fear is effective in the short term, but does not typically have sustaining impact and leads to resentments, and rebellions and other twists in personality.

When I looked at the sun today, I had to wear special glasses or the light would burn my retinas.

When I read Derick's tweets, I feel like I ALSO need to wear special glasses or the idiocy will burn my brain.

Hello folks.

Still amid the aftermath of the wedding - including trying to survive family visit (his side), until tomorrow without actually braining anyone. Since I am currently making from scratch the pie and mash my new BIL expressly requested, just like the last three meals he requested then refused (apparently 'Dad has a policy to never eat anything made by anyone British or Irish because he doesn't trust the food'), but I promised and I won't break a promise... So yeah, missing you guys and stressed to the max, so have the eclipse footage on and was thinking, apart from those squirrelled up in Illinois, I wonder what madness the rest can trot out. Gotta say, for sheer entertainment value today, they're delivering.

I would rather burn for all eternity (Hey! It would be warm), then spend eternity with Derick, Cathy, and the rest of the Duggar crew.

Anyhow, to those seeing the eclipse, Rufus bless! For those like me who have nothing but clouds, that's the cut of it! :)

I'm from NWA and I'm pretty sure I remember Ronnie Floyd saying some really insensitive thngs after the 2010 Haiti earthquake about it being a punishment for sin. I can't find anything about it, though, so maybe it was someone else with that church or even another pastor (though I think it was Cross Church). People in the area were pretty upset about it, whatever it was.

(I actually remember discussing the topic with a good friend who was Hindu. To my surprise, she kind of agreed with the comments and said the people in Haiti must have done something bad in a past life. That was the only time in our friendship where she said something that actually upset me.)

my mother texted me this morning.

Please don't look at the sun today. You will ruin your eyes. I was at a physio appointment and laughed myself silly

I've shared this picture before, but this is a sign someone in Fayetteville put up on April 1 last year in protest of Cross Church expanding into Fayetteville.

The helicopter rides are a reference to the fact that Floyd once used a helicopter to get from one church to another. As far as I can tell though he only did it once. According to a reddit comment on this picture, he does however regularly use chauffered transport between churches.

Cross church is a problem for me. I've lived here since 81. I know a LOT of people that go there, I have not set foot in there since I was 14, so 28 years ago I guess. During that time, I was there for a youth revivla, and during the prayer Ronnie actually said "Dig deep into your hearts and DEEP into your pockets and give to the church" to a group of 10-17 year olds. Not kdding. I laughed out loud with my best friend, and we walked.

Having said that, there are a LOT of REALLY good people that go there. There are a LOT of good things that come from there as well, they support a LOT of good things, have samaritan stores, have a HUGE benevolence presence and support a lot of mission work, and are on average a net positive for the area (but only JUST over average)

The bad, they make decisions that follow the MONEY, not the needs of the community. When they built the Rogers location, they spun and sold it as 'to be nearer those in need' then built in the wealthiest part of Rogers, right near Pinnacle. Where no one in NEED lives.

As far as the helicopter goes, he doesn't ride in one, he does however get a State Trooper escort between locations in his chauffeured SUV (with seperate vehicle for body guards, because northwest Arkansas is SOOOOOO dangerous).

Have thought about it, me burning forever will be a better climate than an English summer, sign me up!

Continue preaching to your choir Mama D, make all those fundies feel superior to the outside world, we'll all just enjoy ourselves out here with our multiculturalism and differing opinions. I'm genuinely disappointed I don't get to see the sight, makes me wish it happened last year when I was living over there.

Wow. That's terrible. I actually wrote a whole end of term paper about how environmental degradation as well as economic/structural disadvantage, brought about largely due to French colonialism and imperialism, made Haiti susceptible to the earthquake. It was a 7.0. The infrastructure wasn't there and so the damage was catastrophic.

I really hate when people talk shit about Haiti and Haitians because it's thinly veiled racism, as well as an attempt to demonize the common practice of voodoo there. They were also the first black republic after revolting against the French. They paid dearly for their freedom, still to this day.

Ronnie Floyd can suck it.

Edited to say: Funnily enough, I also wrote a research paper on the evangelical pro-Israel block and the Moral Majority. of the 1980s.  Apparently Floyd was loosely connected to that movement. Go figure.

He and Jerry Falwell can suck it.

The cynical part of me strongly suspects that Haiti was used, is being used, and may always be used as an example of, "This is what happens when you get uppity and reject colonialism."

Re: the fabulous Dillard tweeters.

Why do they have to take all the fun out of the eclipse?  Here I am looking at the sun (through a welders shield.  I'm not an idiot.  Lol). Thinking how cool this is.  But, you know, shame on me for not having Jesus on my brain ALL the time.  Seems like anything fun is just an opportunity for the Wreck to guilt us into thinking of Jesus.   Sheesh!!! How DARE we all just plain enjoy something. (Insert eye roll)

Note: Of course most of his followers probably agree with him. I doubt if he tweets specifically at FJ.  But then again......maybe he is.   Lol
