They will often think as somewhat akin to alcoholism: as in, even *if* there may be a genetic component, you can choose whether to live an alcoholic lifestyle or abstain. I know a few gay men who are celibate in this vein, because they see their orientation as a type of brokenness.

As someone who is openly bisexual, I've seen this attitude in person. My own mother says to my face she has no problem with my sexuality when I'm single. But let me be with a woman and she starts ranting about "you don't have to engage in your sin" and goes on about how if person who has an addition was predisposed to it due to genetics they should avoid the thing which is the problem.

Loony woman also believes that a embryo is a baby from the moment sperm meets egg and supporting abortion is helping someone murder. Unforually for her, her only child is an escort at the nearest clinic. She hit the jackpot when she adopted me.

Oh sweetheart, she absolutely did hit the jackpot, she just doesn't know it yet.  I would have loved so hard on you if you were my daughter!!  Keep being proud, you have every reason to be.  <3 <3

But why would we choose to be LGBT, when so many people hate us just for existing?  Genuinely don't understand them!  Or is the theory that I don't know it's a choice I'm making, but they're enlightened, so can see what I can't, and that they can see how if I just decided to, I'd be straight?

This, so much.  in first world countries there is the possible threat of violence, but in some third world countries gay people are literally put to death.  Why, if you were choosing, would you choose homosexuality?  It's just such a dumb argument.

My mother was of the "choose to be gay" variety.  It was her opinion that men chose to be gay because they didn't want the responsibility of families and women because they'd all been hurt by men.?!?!

My daughter is 16yo right now, and has very strong opinions about many social issues, one of them being homosexuality.

Growing up she was surrounded by many different opinions.  Me, liberal, 'love is love', my mother with her "hate the sin, not the sinner" and her father "homosexuality - evil".  I gave her my thoughts, but tried to allow her to find her own way (why would she believe me over the other strong influences in her life) and we were talking about it one day she said "I wish I could just ask a gay person if they chose to be gay or not".  Like, it was so simple in her beautiful mind.  If someone who is gay just told her that they were born that way, it would be the end of it for her.  Because, why would they lie?  What would the point be?

So yes, I wish more people were like her and just took your word for it.  I didn't choose to be heterosexual, it's just the way I am.  Why is homosexuality different?

tbh, although it took me a long time to accept being gay, now I'm at the point where the only thing I regret/am sad about is how tiny our dating pool is lmao. If I could choose my sexuality, I'm really not sure I wouldn't choose to be gay anyway because women are awesome. :D Granted, I live in the United States; things might not be perfect here, but I'm still safe compared to gay people in many other countries.
