I pretty much detest the entire medical establishment...hubs got dicked around by "specialists" for over 4 years when he was sick. I thank the cosmic whatever we moved to Phoenix when we did. One of the foremost doctors for his disease was at the university hospital 90 minutes away in Tucson. It was a shocker when one of the surgeons came out to update me and tell me that if he hadn't had surgery, he wouldn't have made it to our wedding anniversary that was 7 months away.

So do I.  I wonder if there are any competent doctors in my city.

Well, many male doctors did not take my gall-bladder issues seriously until I vomited bile on one of them. I got "diagnosed" with depression, that is, I hated taking care of my kids so much that I would make myself sick. OR I was an alcoholic and was lying about my alcohol use (I don't drink) 5 years of bullshit. I ended up in emergency surgery to have my gall bladder removed since it was about to burst.

My current issues were also dismissed as being "all in my head" for years too. It's taken years but finally my FEMALE doctor came to the conclusion that something HAS to be wrong because a normal woman's hands and feet aren't swollen like mine are, and your skin hurting isn't normal either. Male docs...turned it all into some psychological issue...like "you just don't want people to touch you..." bullshit. No asshole...being touched HURTS...like being smacked with a paddle that has a million little needles stuck in it...and that's just a gentle touch.

This is pretty much how its gone with me with my medical problems. I first had stomach issue which would I'd throw up every three to six months.  Every doctor I went to blew it off that I had the flu, or I was pregnant or asked if I was depressed was there and anything going on in my life. Yes, being sick every three to six months. I finally got in to  stomach specialist and yep it turned out I do have a stomach problem that I have to keep to a strict diet to keep it under control.  It took 5 years to get someone who would listen. Then I develop another even more serious medical problem. Again I keep getting blown off even as I went from being able to take care of myself to needing a caretaker.  From walking to a wheelchair.  When I explain my symptoms or new symptoms they suggest I should see a  therapist or ask a question that makes it clear they didn't hear a word I said like being surprised I was in a wheelchair after I explained why I was in a wheelchair.  I've begged for tests and to see specialists only to get my symptoms don't fall under their fields.  Its been 2yrs and I still can't  get anywhere.

@JordynDarby5 I don't want to "like" your post because what you're going through sucks. I don't know why women have such a hard time being taken seriously with medical issues. I hope you can find the answers.

I retrained one of my doctors.  He wasn't bad about being dismissive of women but more than I was comfortable with.  A man I worked with had migraines and saw the same doctor.  He went in and was prescribed Maxalt right then.  I had been in previously and gotten a song and dance and a referral to a neurologist.

I went to the neurologist and went through his protocol and ended up on Maxalt after several visits.  So the next visit after the man got Maxalt without any folderol I plainly asked the doctor to explain that, please.  I got a blank look and an oh my I think there's something I should change there.  The good thing is that he has taken me very seriously on everything since.

I lost my mother because of inattentive and dismissive doctors, and am very sad to hear of others having the same problems. When we were going through it, I assumed it was just our city. When her care spread to other cities, I assumed it was the region. Now I know better.

We had one excellent doctor, but unfortunately, one specialist was not enough. Never be afraid to challenge those in charge of your care. You are your primary advocate, and nobody knows your body better than you do!

@JordynDarby5 I feel your pain. I suffered with an issue for several years, going from doctor to doctor, and being dismissed. I can't tell you how many times I was told there was nothing wrong, or that I was just imagining it. Meanwhile, I felt sicker and sicker. I hurt all over and kept falling asleep in client meetings. I think I saw the one doctor 20 times over three years before she threw her hands up and sent me to an Oncologist, even though she told me she didn't think I had cancer, but that Oncologists were used to seeing "weird things". The Oncologist wasn't sure what the issue was, but sent me to another specialist, who finally diagnosed the issue. It required multiple surgeries, two weeks in the hospital complete with IV antibiotics, and months of heavy-hitter antibiotics. So, it wasn't all in my head. Sadly, I could have been spared years of suffering if I hadn't had to fight to be believed.

I hope you can get the help you need soon.

My heart always hurts when I hear stories of people getting brushed aside by doctors.

My anxiety flared up in college and it sent me to the hospital more than once with severe panic attacks. After I was done with school, it was back to baseline regular ol general anxiety, but I was worried that when my husband went underway for the first time in a few years and I had to take care of BOTH of our shit for 6 months that I would get bad anxiety again and have no one to help out. I did not want to have to deal with that.

So I went to the doctor to get a referral to see a therapist because that's how Tricare works. And he literally told me to make more friends and talk to a pastor (nevermind that he had no idea of my religious affiliation). That he didn't want me to see a therapist for something that so many other women go through all the time and come out on the other end of it alright. Well I was mad. Luckily, the nurse corpsmen came back in and was like "Did he tell you no? Well, I know it sucks, but keep calling for a referral, starting tomorrow. They can't keep turning you down. This guy is leaving, and another doctor will give you one." By the end of that week I had an appointment to see someone.

  • 2 weeks later...

Since everyone went gaga when Alyssa started wearing jeans, it seems only appropriate to share that Whitney is wearing them - and not just in her house either. She and Erin went to the pumpkin patch together with their respective children, and Whitney was wearing jeans. I like that she and Erin are close enough that she doesn't have to hide from Erin anymore ... it makes me respect both of them more, especially because I originally thought Erin was the one (along with Kelly) who made Whitney feel "convicted" to never wear pants.

Here we go again with the pants thing. It's called a marketing strategy to make them look normal so as to draw people in.

We can talk about pants until we're blue in the face and the fact would still be that they believe awful things. They don't change their beliefs when they start to wear pants. I am of the opinion that Whitney never stopped, why would she? She just humours her in-laws, all the while being a fundie.

On a Duggar thread it was stated that ALERT now has a young ladies group. Guess what? They will have to wear pants. So, tell me again how women/girls wearing pants means taking baby sreps away from the cult?

Definitely not. ALERT is getting baptized in the koolaid.

i don't give a damn why they're wearing pants, just glad that they aren't as restricted in their attire as the ones who wear skirts-only.

Really?  So being in a quasi military reform program where their actions, communication, autonomy, and thoughts (as far as tptb can control) are restricted but as long as they can slip into a pair of Levis you're glad?  :kitty-shifty:

that's not what i said. i said i don't care why they're wearing pants. so if you require further clarification, i'll just say this: when it comes down to being allowed/not allowed to wear pants, the former is much better.

i understand that it can be slim pickings around here when it comes to challenging opinions, but i'm not really interested in debating this issue for the 50th time on here.

and i wasn't even commenting on ALERT of what they do there. just in everyday life... like going to the pumpkin patch.

I agree. I think it's all relative. The choice to wear pants is a positive thing, but I think if the reason is something like sending someone to a camp to reform their behavior, it sounds like 1 step forward, 2 steps back. Even if pants are being allowed under select circumstances, it'd still be more 100x more heartening to see a young adult being allowed to take classes at the local community college or something.

No one is interested in debating this again, but when you continue to make statements like this people will continue to point out how meaningless they are.

STEP(the female ALERT) has been around for a while now and IBLP has allowed pants on women for over a decade, and guess what? Nothing has gotten better for the IBLP students. It is still the same old cult, except now with pants. So I don't get the "Yeah pants!" like it is some big deal. Getting to wear pants while being brainwashed isn't actually any better. @actuallyjessica can you explain why you think wearing pants somehow makes the abusive brainwashing better or less bad?

well, that was a worthwhile contribution to the discussion..

I think the pants only stand out to us because the Duggars and the Batsesesss have been so vocal about skirts only in the past. As @formergothardite has pointed out that was by choice, not by Gothard decree.

Perhaps this idea should be included in 10 proven ways to resist being brainwashed by a cult:

1.  Wear pants to the pumpkin patch!

:)

Well then, I will be sure to wear pants the next time that I am at the pumpkin patch. No one wants to be brain washed.

I think that it's silly that this debate continues, skirts were a choice like @formergothardite said it wasn't a decree from Gothard who said that they had to wear them. It was a personal choice, just as it continues to be a personal choice for Whitney and Alyssa. I'm sure that they would still shoot the same bullshit that the Duggars would. Even in pants.

@actuallyjessica seems unable to let go of her conviction that wearing pants means renouncing IBLP and all that it stands for - or she just likes to be annoying.  :laughing-jumpingpurple:

the latter. we've had this discussion many a time before, so not sure why you all seem to want to rehash it? i'm tired of trying to explain my answers even if i'm not actually disagreeing with any of you. it's like you're looking for people to barrel up and fight or something?
