What happened to:

I believe largely as the Duggars do

the ideas presented by those here who dislike the Duggars are basically nothing new to me.

This was in response to me pointing out how the Duggars believe really awful things and follow a guy who groomed teen girls so that he could sexually harass them. Have you changed your beliefs? What caused that change?

Let me say first you have an amazing memory. Second, about a billionth of a second before I read this, I thought of you and I knew you were going to ask. I'll send you a pm if you really want to know how my thoughts have evolved over time.

How well do they stay? Do they damage the nails?

I've had really great luck with them, to be honest. As long as you're careful not to put your fingers all over the adhesive side or pull them up and re-position them more than once, they tend to stay put. I'm a freelance writer and type all day, and they last quite well on my nails.

They do not damage the nail as long as you remove them carefully. You can either peel them off gently or use nail polish remover. I have never had one take layers of nail off, or anything like that.

Just seal it all off with a liberal layer of top coat, and you should be good to go!

Having been raised in that horrible religious cult, I remember people like you who defend the beliefs and say they share them. Yeah, you stand out in my mind with the way you treated abuse like it was no big deal. That is pretty memorable.

Don't send a PM, but if you are comfortable I bet a lot of people would be interested in learning how someone can go from believing like the Duggars to believing their beliefs are wrong and dangerous.

I really like the nail wraps! The Sally Hansen ones are really easy to apply, and as long as you don't re-position them a bunch and remember to seal them with a good top coat, they last quite awhile. I type all day and they still last at least a week for me.

I actually prefer the Sally Hansen ones. I LOVE Jamberry's designs, but the edges tend to curl within a few days and start catching on everything. You can reseal with heat, but that is a short-term fix. I usually end up just peeling them all off after four or five days. The Sally Hansen ones stay on a bit better than regular nail polish, but they're cheaper and the topcoat gives them a bit more durability, ime.

For someone like me who just can't sit and let a mani dry, wraps are a godsend.

(And I have no new opinion on JD. He's a disgusting excuse for a human being and so're his parents.

Well, my offer still stands.

That has been my experience, too. Jamberry has lovely ideas, but the implementation isn't quite as durable as I'd like. Sally Hansen's wraps just work much better for me, and they're less finicky to apply than Jamberry.

Gemma, I edited my post, not sure if you saw. I honestly hate having these sorts of conversations via a private message because I think many people would like knowing how someone could drop fundie beliefs in such a short time, especially since you were aware of all the abuse that came with those beliefs. Of course, no one expects you to share information that you aren't comfortable sharing.

I'm still waiting to hear from Kirk Cameron. He was such a fan of the way the Duggar kids were raised. I want to hear from him so he can tell us he wants his own daughters to be treated like Anna has been treated. Any thoughts, Kirk?

I imagine Kirk is busily scribbling notes for a film to be called "Unanimous" - a story of sin and redemption.

I would be interested in hearing, as well. I grew up around Gothardism and I do know that it is possible and common for people to be in it for a time and then leave. Even those who have been raised fundie from birth.

Such a dramatic change of opinion in less than six months...

Yes, I saw the change. The problem with sharing here is that the post will probably be insanely long and tons of questions will ensure. Not conducive to me sorting my thoughts. But, I will say this publicly. ...I think I remembered your name because you said I should read up on gothard.....which I did. That's probably why your name flashed into my head a moment before you just appeared.

I wouldn't expect you to care if atheism got a bad rap. You don't believe in anything so what's to care about.

I believe in something and I care about it.

I'm only explaining what I was thinking when I wrote the things I wrote. I don't need you to understand or care, I'm just explaining my state of mind. That's it. I probably need to go home and take a nap.

Excuse me, but atheism is not "not believing in anything." It's fairly specific to god. I'm an atheist and I have all sorts of beliefs, many of which are indeed very important to me.

I know this is a tangent to the gist of the argument here -- and also has already been addressed by other posters -- I just wanted to point out that this is yet another situation where "words have meanings" and where saying something incorrect and/or offensive, even if it isn't what you really mean, may well result in someone pushing back against it.

I'm not sure if this is the right moment for this, but if it is, I'd like to ask if any of you guys know what colors will be in next fall for a chic mani/pedi.

If it's not the right place/time, please continue with the discussion and ignore this parenthesis...

Safety orange is my colour of choice. It glows. I LOVE it.

I just came from the market and there's a big cover devoted to Anna - What Will She Do Now? and the story about the soldiers who foiled the train attack are relegated to a tiny at the top of the cover. On the inside, People explains this away by letting us know that their subscribers (who had a Duggar cover last week) will get a cover with the soldiers but the rest of the public gets more Duggar.

Would you like me to start a thread in Quiverfull of Snark for the subject? I think a lot of people would be interested in knowing how someone could change such extreme beliefs so quickly. It isn't like you didn't know about the abuse or the dark side of the Duggars either, you said you did. If you don't mind sharing it would be very interesting.

I toooootally thought #notallchristians but I didn't want to risk being seen as a racist just to be funny. I appreciate you taking the hit though, LOL.

I have very thin, constantly peeling nails, so when (on rare occasion) I get a manicure I go with a shellac. Yes it can do some damage, but my nails are already ick looking anyway.

I'm a big fan of French tip with pretty flowers painted over :)

We are headed for josh let madison chapter 6, I want to nominate samurai....'s "at the Jesus Boot Camp".

I like. I'd like to throw "sin, confess, repeat" into the mix via Daniel Kelly once again.

I've never tried wraps other than Jamberry. I have found that the different finishes on the wraps affect how they go on and stay on - at least on me! Their base coat has the wraps falling off my fingers in just a few days but for others I know it improves wear time to two weeks.

Just because ...I'm a Christian as well and it does trouble me that a segment of Christianity is of the duggar variety. I don't think it reflects badly on me. Sometimes people do generalize, but like someone just said, just be secure and don't worry about others.

Exactly this. When someone says "Oh all atheists believe in nothing so whatever!" it doesn't bother me because I know who I am, what I believe in, and realize they don't know me and thus, aren't referring to ME! If someone says Christians are hypocrits and you are a Christian and not a hypocrit, well they weren't talking about you. If someone says Muslims are terrorists and you aren't one, they weren't talking about you (granted, this one has much bigger implications in our current US society so I don't take that assumption as lightly).

I wonder what Kirk's sidekick, Ray Comfort, thinks of all this. When the molestation news came out he said it was B.J. (before jesus). So whats the explanation now? A.S. (after satan)?

Can the posters crying persecution please take a second to look up the meaning of the word persecution! Or take a second and open up a history textbook and educate themselves on things like the Crusades, the pogroms, and the Holocaust? Or I don't know, if that's too much for you just turn on the news and learn stories about people today being killed or attacked for their beliefs? People disagreeing with you on the Internet or pointing out how what you said is inappropriate is NOT persecution.

Thank you. I knew something about that comment didn't sit right with me, but I couldn't come up with what it was. Same here, I also have plenty of beliefs, despite not believing in a god. Sometimes it seems like to a Christian, belief in god is like 95% of their life; to me, the idea of god never comes up. It's like .01% of my life, atheism. I'm just glad that I am secure, I know I am a good person, I don't care what happens after death, and I am ok with the idea that when someone dies they just don't exist any more. I like things that are proven with science and seem possible to me. But at the same time, every other person is welcome to believe what they want, whether it seems nuts to me or not. I only get angry when those beliefs start to encroach on my life and the laws of my country.
