Erskine College Takes a Stand Against Gays

After two male athletes on the volleyball team came out as gay, the administration of Erskine College in South Carolina decided that the school needed to issue a public statement against homosexuality:

“Erskine recognizes the complexity of current issues regarding sexual morality, marriage, and other expressions of human sexuality such as same-sex attraction, gender identity, and sex outside the covenant of marriage. Therefore, the Erskine community is advised to practice humility and prayerfulness when engaging in any conversations or other actions related to these topics. Erskine’s conduct policies and procedures seek to uphold biblical standards, promote repentance and grace, and point people to Jesus Christ . . . We believe the Bible teaches that all sexual activity outside the covenant of marriage is sinful and therefore ultimately destructive to the parties involved. As a Christian academic community, and in light of our institutional mission, members of the Erskine community are expected to follow the teachings of scripture concerning matters of human sexuality and institutional decisions will be made in light of this position.â€

The school is affiliated with the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Does anyone know anything about them. It seems like the student body was pretty accepting of the athletes who came out, and the incident got some coverage in the news, so maybe the denomination wanted to clamp down on the school in case any other students were influenced by the first two and decided to be open about their sexuality.

I attended Erskine for a year in th early 90's. I had friends there that were openly gay, at least to fellow students, not necessarily to faculty. It's definitely a religious school. We had to attend convocation for an hour several times during the school week and at least occasional church attendance was required as well. If student life at Erskine is still anything at all like it was when I was there, the powers that be should be more concerned about the drinking, hazing, and sexual assaults that occur on campus, rather than who's gay and who isn't.
