Why not hook these moms up with a subutex doc and get them into long term residential treatment for their pregnancy, instead of throwing them in jail? Addicted moms detoxing is NOT a safe situation, depending on what they are detoxing from.

Of course, most of these people passing laws aren't addictions therapist or know two shits about detoxing ANYONE, never mind pregnant woman! :angry-banghead: (says the SA detox nurse manager)

When we talk about access to care by addicted pregnant women, we need to realize that they won't all be saying, "yes, I want to get clean and sober right now".

We need programs for those that do want to get sober. We also need women who are still addicted to be able to access services and health care, so that they can at least get some basic prenatal care, nutrition, safe shelter and be somewhat connected so that they don't give birth to a dead baby in an alley.

Prevention of problems requires more fundamental changes. What causes addiction to begin with? How can we make sure that all women have full control over their reproductive systems, so that they are aware of their fertility and able to make healthy choices even before a pregnancy is obvious?

Yes, this exactly. Harm reduction with the consent of the people involved.

Forcing any kind of rehab type thing on pregnant women will just make people avoid all pre natal care. Or lie about their drug use, which I'm pretty sure is really, really bad when it comes to things like administering painkillers during birth.
