They've been mentioned already but not by me, so:

Lois Lowry's Anastasia Krupnik series

A Wrinkle in Time

All the Little House books

Little Women

Dandelion Wine

Something Wicked This Way Comes

(Pretty much anything Ray Bradbury ever wrote)

(Ditto for Dr. Seuss)

All Creatures Great and Small (and the sequels)

Anne of Green Gables

I dimly recall checking out stacks of Pepto-Bismol pink hardcover Nancy Drew books from the library, as well as some yellow Trixie Beldens. Funny that I remember color and texture of the covers in more detail than the stories. :)

I realised that somewhere in the bleak grey stoniness of the bleak grey stones of the bleak grey stony landscape of bleak grey stony Mordor I had got fed up.

I read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy (with the boss's permission) during a very boring long-ago temp job. Surrounded as I was by bleak grey walls, bleak grey carpets, and bleak grey cubicles, I guess Mordor seemed like an improvement!
