If he or his cronies joined the army, they'd then start out as followers - and unless they achieved some outlandishly high rank through the course of their service, they would always be answerable to someone of higher rank. (And even the highest ranks are answerable to the Commander-in-Chief.)

That - and I'm being entirely serious, here - is why people like Doug Phillips idolize the military but join the pastorate instead: Instant leadership without the attendent need for accountability or personal sacrifice.
