Hobby Lobby is closer to my house, but I drive the extra few miles to Michaels. Where we used to live had an amazing JoAnn's but the one in this town suuuuuucks.

A commenter on the Jezebel article said that Hobby Lobby has a horrible reputation in the crafting industry. If a company gives them a sample of something they'd like to sell in the store, Hobby Lobby will steal design and make cheap knock-offs.

I can avoid the Hobby Lobby here by going to Michaels and Joann's. There is also a small local crafting store where they are really friendly and teach a lot of classes you won't find elsewhere (I am now into embroidery after taking their class). The owners of the local store are also pro-choice and majorly supportive of the family planning clinic where I'm on the board. They allowed volunteers to use their sewing machines for free to sew cloth exam gowns.

Honestly, I think a lot of people are misinformed that the morning/week after pill is an abortion pill and not simply a birth control pill. If people did just a bit of research, they would know the difference.

For a lot of them, I don't think it would even matter. As far as they're concerned, birth control pills ARE abortifacient :?

Exactly. You could present irrefutable iron-clad proof that birth control pills do not cause abortions and it would be of no use. Some people are so dead set on believing something for whatever that they will cling to it despite all evidence to the contrary. Either they will come out of it with time or stay that way until the day they die. It's like an atheist and a Christian trying to debate the existence of God. One uses reason, the other uses faith. Incompatible.

I'm thinking raffles for knitted acrylic frumpers with bible verses stitched in polyester thread. Perhaps they'll tape dollar bills over their mouths with the "In God We Trust" bit underlined. Oh, and potato sack races. Yeah.

I was just doing a search for additional LYSs near me and I found a cool looking one in Asheville. Purl's Yarn Emporium supports marriage equality and reproductive rights! You could even earn a Purl's Scouts badge for knitting a uterus and sending it to your male representative with a message to "Hands off my uterus. Here's one of your own!"

Purl's Yarn Emporium sounds like my kind of LYS (knitterese for local yarn shop).

edited for riffle

I guess the HL near me is an oddity because it's generally clean and the staff behaves itself, and it's the Joanns that is understaffed and dirty as hell. Still, I have stopped shopping at HL.

We have a shopping center (for those of you in Phoenix, it's "The Pavilions" at 101 and East Indian Bend on the Pima-Maricopa reservation) with a Joann's, a Michaels and, in the past year, a Hobby Lobby, all within a stone's throw of each other. I shop at the Joann's first and the Michaels second, with the Hobby Lobby being a "Not At All, ThankYouVeryMuch." This despite the fact that a cousin works in the HL warehouse in Oklahoma City. (Another cousin, a sibling to this cousin, works part time at Michaels in OKC.)

**For good yarn and spinning fiber, I hit my local yarn shop.

I already knew it was a fundie company, thanks to TWoP, and this makes their true colors known. Way to impose your religious beliefs on your employees! And I agree with the comment saying their lawsuit opens the door for corporations to get out of paying for birth control by using the "we're religious" excuse.

Thankfully, I don't have to worry about avoiding shopping there because the closest one to me is in New Jersey. I'm Michael's all the way!

Since the other side likes to argue that gay marriage would lead to marrying dogs, toasters, and such, here's another "slippery slope" arguement. If the Hobby Lobby is allowed to deny employees contraception coverage because of religious objections, what is to stop any employer from declaring themselves Christian Scientist and canceling health insurance for all employees? Or maybe argue that since a certain employee was married in the church/temple/mosque of the employer's religion, the employee's marriage isn't valid in the eyes of the Lord and the spouse and any children aren't eligible for family coverage.

Fox news has a story about it, it's both good and bad. foxnews.com/us/2012/09/20/growing-boycott-against-retail-chain-hobby-lobby-after-lawsuit-against-health/?intcmp=trending

While a judge has not yet ruled on Hobby Lobby's suit, a Facebook page calling for a boycott of the company, which operates 500 stores in 41 states, has appeared online, and several other forums have featured posts urging customers to steer clear of Hobby Lobby.

“I've been to two Hobby Lobby parking lots today and they were fairly empty. I used to have trouble finding a parking spot!†read one posting from the administrator of the Boycott page. “I think the boycott is catching on! I do not think they are getting the reaction they hoped for.â€

The company does not object to providing coverage that includes birth control pills, but refuses to provide or pay for two specific abortion-inducing drugs such as the so-called "morning after" pill,
 Wouldn't be Faux news if it didn't include some non-facts.

Pastors are now protesting Hobby Lobby's position on morning after pills.

Access to contraceptive care is a very good thing," Schmitz said. "This isn't about abortion. These pills do not cause abortion. It's contraception."

Michael Sharrard, spokesman for Faithful America, said a large part of his group's efforts "is to try to counter extremists" and that it represents the "mainstream majority."

"It's a woman's personal decision on what kind of birth control to use," said Cat Barr, campaign director for UltraViolet. "Hobby Lobby is out of touch with mainstream Americans. It's not their role to be dictating medical decisions."

I just found out the makers of Lion Brand Yarn are Jewish, and pretty observant. Their Manhattan store is closed on Saturdays and holidays, and they don't process online orders on the holidays. I wonder how Hobby Lobby feels about carrying yarn from such outspoken heathens.

I drive by a Hobby Lobby on my way to & from work. The store is always clean & neat, but there's just a depressing atmosphere. Now I know why. I usually by cloth & doll stands there because it's so convenient. I will not do that anymore.

No more of my ebul librull dollars for you, Hobby Lobby.

FeministShrew,

The Christian easy-listening doesn't help the atmosphere in Hobby Lobby stores any.

I love that the owners of Lion Brand yarn are Jewish. I've got a few skeins of Lion Brand to knit up. I also love that the nearby HL has, in their section of Asian decor junk, a number of statues of the Buddha, Hotei (the fat "Buddha") and Kwan Yin. Hotei and Kwan Yin are both Bodhisattvas. All would be considered pagan idols by the HL folks.

One thing that always amuses me is that Hobby Lobby has all of their Xmas decor off the shelves a couple of weeks before Christmas. What if you need some last minute decorations for your church?

It's like being outspoken about being pro-life is "the thing" for conservative Christians, whereas selling Buddha statues (as decoration, of course) doesn't compromise your beliefs. Whatever

I had someone invite me to a Facebook "event" where you can accept or decline on shopping at HL to support their stand against Pres. Obama forcing them to pay for their employees abortions. I "declined" the event, but commented on what the actual facts were in the situation. I currently have someone arguing with me that the morning after pill's main function is causing abortions. I showed her the math (from a Catholic site on the MA pill mind you) that the MA pill isn't even needed 78% of the time, and of the 22% that it is needed, approximately 8% of those actually keep a fertilized egg from implanting. So, if a drug has only an 8% chance of being an abortificant, it's quite a ridiculous stretch to say the president is forcing a company to pay for abortions. I also pointed out how there are plenty of Rx drugs that cause birth defects etc., but no one seems to be harping on them.

I love their Fisherman's Wool Yarn. I buy it at Michael's. ;)

I think I am going to start a business some day and base my health benefits on my religious beliefs.

Prostate enlargement is a gift from the angels to bless older men who have avoided sexual immorality throughout their lives. Allowing prescriptions for Flomax would be a sacrilege.

Erectile dysfunction is also a gift from God. No Viagra, Cialis, etc.

I'm feeling super spiritual now.

Well, the local Michael's recently closed, and HL over on the yuppy side of town was the only option. BUT I recently saw a sign advising that a Joann's is being built on the site of a nearby former Walmart. So now I can shun HL and the too-cool neighborhood all at once.
