There's some REALLY interesting discussion on her insta, about these books. Or there was, a couple of hours ago.

I just hopped over to her Instagram and at this point it seems only comments are from leghumpers.

Quick story: During college for a while I was commuting to an internship via city bus (large metro area) and always met the strangest people sitting at the bus stop downtown. One was this mid-sixties looking dude who sat down next to me on the bench grabbed a handful of cherries from the bag sitting in my lap without asking (!!!), and launched into a rant about a, how fat/stupid/unhealthy Hillary voters were and b, the wonder that is Ayn Rand. He did ok with b at first, he'd clearly read Atlas Shrugged, but from there jumped into how much he loved Interview with a Vampire. Because just as eating cherries = being a right winger, so did Ayn Rand= Anne Rice. Reading this thread, I keep thinking of this guy and imagining him somewhere reading the tuttle twins interspersed with some kiddie vampire book to a grandkid. :pb_rollseyes:

On the Tuttle twins website, it says:

  Hide contents

Each year, hundreds of millions of children are spoon-fed false history, bad economics, and logical fallacies. Your child is not immune.

And these books will help do that for your child! :my_sleepy: Make sure it’s the right kind of indoctrination.

Those books literally make my jaw drop.

The family worries me and more.

You wouldn't have caught JB or M reading their kids the tuttle twins, or reading to them at all, or exposing them to any ideas about economics and such.  I think the Dillard kids will get a qualitatively more rigorous education than most of their cousins and be encouraged to go to college.

Did you point out to him that 1, it is rude to take food that isn't yours with out asking 2. Anne Rice is  a prolific author of the horror genera and Ayn Rand was an Atheist libertarian?

I honestly doubt Jill cares.   I think we often project our own feelings of embarrassment and disgust at D-wreck onto her. I believe her when she says #besthubbyever. The girl was never great at critical thinking or dissent. When I see something that tells me otherwise, I'll change my mind (nose-rings and pants don't really count to me)

I wish terms like "gender fluidity" "democratic socialism"  "systemic injustices" or  "the fallacy of American exceptionalism" could be introduced to Izzy and Sam. Partly because I think it would make them better human beings but also cause it would piss D-wreck off.

I think one has to recognize that there are many different ways to not be fundie. Not being fundie doesn't mean aligning with a particular political standpoint, being an LGBT advocate, trying to change "systemic injustices", or abandoning all religious convictions. I think it would be nice to have a discussion, perhaps on this thread, about what not being fundie means to you.

To me, not being fundie means
1. using birth control
2. wearing whatever clothes feel right to you instead of having a ton of rules
3. educating women and allowing them to work
4. letting your children socialize and have a fun and educational childhood

5. letting wives make their own choices rather than the headship being a control freak (it's even ok if they believe in headship as long as if in real life the headship isn't really controlling everything.)

Did the Duggar kids read much of anything growing up? As a avid book reader who pretty much read whatever I could get my hands on... that makes me very sad if they read infrequently.

when my daughter got her dress, i was there, along with her mother in law 2b, and her sisters in law 2b, who were her bridemaids, and also her daughter. when my daughter in law got her dress, i was there, along with her mother, her sister and my daughter. when last son's almost wife (she broke it off 6 months before the wedding) got her dress, she didn't invite me and i was quite sad about that. i never even got to see that dress. i wonder if she'll use it for a wedding in the future LOL i think its nice to have an "entourage", as long as it isn't too big.

Ugh I wish I could say I'd had some snappy comebacks! I was wearing a jacket that was branded with the name and logo of where I was interning (branch of local govt) and felt I had to step carefully around political discussion. I did put my cherries away and find some chocolate in my bag, to link myself with the Clintonian masses :)

Not being Fundie means not taking the Bible literally or allowing your religion to determine every aspect of your life.

I don't know the whole as many as good will give us thing seems to change from couple to couple even within the same religion. Alyssa and John said they only wanted 6-8 we'll see Erin claims to have left the Godhard church. (not sure about that she's the wackadoo who had a birthday cake at her wedding for him)  and Jeremy well his own views are harmful he seems to vere away from the Duggar's in their stricter view points so him and JInger having 5-8 kids I could see. maybe his church is like the one Steve Maxwell went to before the reversal babies that found it okay to have a vasectomy.

I’ve mentioned this multiple times, but Erin claimed no such thing. She stated her family no longer follow Bill Gothard, but she said nothing about not following his past teachings or leaving IBLP. There’s a big and important difference between the two. She issued a very carefully worded statement intended to end questions she was being asked concerning her family’s involvement with Gothard and IBLP - but at no time have I seen anything indicating they’ve ceased following IBLP. And considering both her father and her father-in-law are Board Members, I find it very unlikely that they’ll be a telling away in any real capacity any time soon*.

*Its definitely not impossible they’ll step away, but I don’t think they will. Neither Chad nor Erin strike me as people currently questioning their belief system, mostly because everything is working out in their favor right now. People are more likely to question if they’re unhappy or facing tough times and the Paines appear to be genuinely happy with their lives at the moment.

And IBLP did some sort of dance to distance themselves from Gothard as well.  It was all a semantic shuffle centering around how he was no longer the LEADER, so no one was FOLLOWING him blah blah blah.

Did IBLP change? Not at all.  Does Bill Gothard still have influence in an unofficial capacity? Very likely.  Do his principles and teachings still remain? Absolutely.

Nothing's changed, they just removed the figurehead for his personal scandals.  No one "follows" him anymore, but they still remain loyal to his teachings and life principles.  They might still associate with him as a person.  But he's not their nominal religious leader.  That title has been removed.

Lots of assumptions and great Photoshop around here.

Went to look and it has all been deleted. Did anyone point out that these books were written by an antisemite? I wonder if she ever feels a flicker of shame when she deletes batches of comments? Or does she just write it off as the soldiers of Satan attacking her beautiful and righteous choices?

Fuck Jill. I know we all like to think of Derick as the villain in this little play, but I have a growing suspicion that Jill is just as vicious and vile as her hideous husband. And if she's happily tucking her kids in and reading them this Hitler-youth propaganda, then she can go straight to hell. I know she's ignorant and indoctrinated but I have yet to see any evidence that she doesn't 100% support everything that Derick says. For all we know she's enthusiastically egging him on behind the scenes. At best she's an emptyheaded little enabler. I pity her but I also find her repulsive.

On a completely different note: Those eyes... they are a screaming abyss. I think if I stare long enough they'll eat part of my soul.

I really don’t think Jill has the critical thinking skills to understand why the books are racist and anti-Semitic.

Yeah, I think you’re right. Which is why she has my pity.

Jill apparently isn't grounded enough in her professed Judeo-Christian religious tradition to understand how its core values conflict with an extreme ideology of rational self interest, either.

I'm inclined to agree, but believe she'd be enthusiastically egging on whoever she was married to.  She reminds me of tofu - bland, but absorbent.

Does anyone really believe Jill understands the subtext of those books? She wasn’t raised to be a critical thinker, so she likely just reads the book at face value. What drives me crazy is that someone actually sought out that type of book. Are Goodnight Moon type books too liberal? I don’t know anything about kids but shouldn’t books for kids Izzy’s age just be happy, comforting with a side of rhyming?

As to the one whose cherries were stolen by the weird guy, I would have totally thrown them out. I could not deal with a stranger putting their hands in my food. I have been know to throw out food or drinks when people caught or sneeze and don’t cover their mouths.
