Christina Mercy Maxwell Models Headband

Creaky Mom

I am just happy to see Melanie enjoying her baby. The child is adorable, and the headband looks comfy and soft. Not an awful plastic or scratchy headband. It's not my thing, but I don't see the harm.

It's super important to always be able to instantly identify the gender of a child, even a newborn. How else will you know what box to put them in. In fact a "friend" of mine on facebook was just lamenting that her little girl (3ish) is into superheroes and just had to have a spiderman shirt, but was happy that at least she found a spiderman shirt that was purple and pink. Otherwise I suppose people might get confused, despite the fact her little girl has long hair with a bow in it. I mean how else will people know how to properly stereotype children.

Yeah, right? A relative is expecting a girl soon, and mentioned wanting to find a certain sports team's onesie for her baby. A Facebook friend instantly hoped they could find a pink one. :/ As a '70s feminist who had her child during that decade, I hate aggressively masculine or feminine clothing for kids.

And I hate, hate, hate those freaking baby headbands.

That said, little Christina is a beautiful baby, and I hope her mom rests and recuperates adequately.

Yeah up until my nephew was about 18mos he had long curly blonde hair. We were at the library one day getting books and he had a shirt on that said "Auntie's little man." Lo and behold, somebody comes up and says "Isn't she just the cutest!"

His pretty long hair before my sister got it cut:

As for baby Mercy, well, I hope one day she and her sisters can escape the crazy.

Among Orthodox Jews there are a lot of people who don't cut their new child's hair until the age of three years (because you don't cut fruit of a new tree until three years) and so there are lots of long haired gorgeous ringlets little boys out there. Among them though sometimes people worry that non-community members will think the kid is a girl.

I can't say as I feel one way or the other about the haircut but one thing I like about that Jewish tradition is they take the kid to school for the first time and they have a sweet upon learning the alphabet (some lick honey right off the letters) and that strikes my sentiment nicely, that a kid is impressed upon that learning is a sweet and good thing to do, with great reward.

We might argue over what should be studied, of course, but... :)

Asian Pear porn?? I seriously love you.

I am not worthy...

Trivia time though! I had a gut reaction to that headband so did a GIS about 梨 (nashi) because that's the fruit I always see in those wrappers at the market. So, found that image, etc.

So it turns out English speakers call it "Asian pears" but the funny thing is the things US people call just "pears" (Bartlett etc) are called to me 洋梨(younashi) which means just... Western Pears so... yeah. It's all symmetrical! :) And all of it is TASTY...

... and maybe some untapped source of headband fashion! Maybe!

I wanted a girl so bad and then after I had one I was sick of the color pink in a matter of weeks. I put headbands on my daughter for photos, but she never wore them for any other reason. I was more into cute white eyelet bonnets which also would keep her head warm or protected from the sun.

Awwwww, that is so cute! My mom saved bonnets she had me wearing as a baby and I always hoped I could use them for my own daughter. T'was not to be, but maybe I will have granddaughters!

I don't understand the headband thing. Or the ones with giant poofy flowers. For every freaking outfit they own. Seriously, what happened to the days of little knit caps or little scalloped bonnets?

I really don't like the headbands. They fill no function what so ever. Give me a cute little hat instead, they can still work as "gender identifiers" if you feel you need that but they fill other functions such as keeping the kids head warm and the sun off.

Slightly OT but a few days ago I left a few comments on the Maxwell blog. The first two were usual congratulations comments, the third one was about Joseph buying his house. The congrats comments have been approved, the one about the house wasn't and that to me is pretty revealing.

I asked what Joseph would do if he met a young lady who wasn't fairly local and that young lady didn't want to move halfway across the USA to live in Joseph's house once they were married, would Joseph move to her locality. I pointed out that if he felt led to court a young lady that he met at a conference for example, she might live a very long way away from Kansas, I gave Washington and Maine as examples, and moving away from her family is a daunting prospect for a newly wedded young lady.

To me, for a sheltered, young woman such as the type that Steve-O will want for Joseph, can you imagine moving across the USA, leaving all you know behind, to marry a man you hardly know, who you have never been alone with to get the chance to know, can you imagine how hard that would be? Perhaps there might be a reason in which moving to kansas might not be practical for the girl. For example; I have a friend who has four brothers. Two now live abroad and two are local. Of the ones who live local, one is married with a hoard of kids and the other is disabled and still lives with their mother. Their mother is on her own as her dad died around 7 years ago so my friend gives a lot of help to her mother. She takes over the care of her brother to give her mum some respite and helps out financially as her mum can't work, plus she's in her late 60s now anyway. Moving away for my friend just isn';t an option. She wouldn't do it as it would leave her mother in the lurch, even though her mum would never try to prevent her from leaving.

I wonder if Steve-O would turn down a girl such as my friend as a wife for Joseph. I'd like to bet he would even if she were the best Christian in the world. He wouldnt want Joseph being out from under his influence.

Anyway, my comment didn't get approved, unsurprisingly. Steve-O will NEVER let any of them go. When Joseph decides to court, his intended better be prepared to move to Kansas or Steve-O will not allow it to continue.

I will admit to being one of those moms who did the headbands and bows on my daughter. I had always wanted a daughter, and when my 2nd was a girl, she got headbands, bows, and frilly dresses (but not a ton of pink, she looks better in deeper colors). Why? I was just so damn happy that I had a daughter. She's still a girly girl at 6.5...she wore a party dress and mary janes to go grocery shopping in yesterday.

I think you have the younger version of my daughter! My daughter is 11 and STILL loves all things pink and girly!

I only approve of the bunny ears hats on babies.

But fear not, fundies, you can get them in pink to get your gender message accross:

And considering how reproduction is their only occupation/main goal in life, the rabbit comparison is not undeserved or random...

I LOVE babies on hats! So adorable. I don't have kids but I envision boy or girl there will be a lot of purple and Batman in their future.

Eta- I don't like headbands. I envision that episode of the duggars when J'chelle tried to put one on Josie. It makes my head hurt just thinking about it.

I didn't put them on J. They made indentions in her poor lil head! And she looked like a girl anyways to me. LOL! My niece? The girl had a bow on her head since she came out. I'm fine with bows once babies get hair or if you can find a headband that doesn't hurt them... (btw-- the ones that are sorta like panty hose material? Those are the most gentle imo!) then it's fine. I hate those headbands like that poor baby has on though. I also hate when the bow is bigger than the baby!!

Also-- my child loves pink and barbies... and all superheres, and dinos. :) I told her she's a tomboy and she hollered "NO! I'm a TOMGIRL!" :):)

I can put my baby girl in bright fuschia frilly dressy dresses and people still ask me if "it's a boy". Blue dress (dress!). They assume boy. People are just wierd.

That said, the headbands are growing on me. Just a little.

I put Julia in a blue dress once too! Had tulle... lace... very princess-ish... and got "What a cute boy!" What?? She was in a DRESS! And frilly socks!! Come on!! (I didn't put shoes on her then..)

I didn't get the headbands thing at first either, but they're growing on me. After seeing my granddaughter look adorable in them I'm giving it a pass. I thought Christina's pictures were beautiful. She's a beautiful baby. I imagine there has been a lot of thanksgiving going on during Bible time. (Maybe a little self-congratulations too on being so righteous that God made everything work out for them).

Of course one of the girls will have to stay behind. Nathan is far too busy with his weight lifting and rope climbing to help take care of the household.

There was a comment on one of the posts from Aunt someone who said Christina looked like she would be chunky like her cousins and they were looking forward to seeing her next week. Hopefully that means that Melanie's family will be around to help.

:D Call me an old fogey, but I'd prefer to focus on a sweet little miracle face rather than a headband.

I'm a grouchy Mama, I say leave the headbands for when they've gotten to the age of backtalk. Then the sparkly flowers will distract me momentarily from the sass.

You know what Jack Handy said in Deep Thoughts:

"The face if a child can say it all. Especially the mouth part of the face."

I strongly approve of all awkward and hilarious hats/clothing/hair on babies (and to be honest - dogs and cats) because (1) it is just too funny (2) they can do nothing about it (bwahahaha) (3) blackmail options in the future (?a montage for a wedding) and last but certainly not least (4) I am a bad person.
