I recently was looking through the obituaries for Dubuque and one of them said that the deceased loved to argue and was never wrong about anything.

On a somewhat lighter note, I read an obit last year for a statistician professor here at UT Austin that very affectionately listed the length of his life in years, days, hours and minutes.

This reminded me of a great political TV ad that aired locally in 2016:  Please re-elect Gerald, please.

I read this and instantly thought of Kirk Cameron movies.

"Song of the South" and the original "The Birth of a Nation" have found their platform.

"Non-woke Netflix"?

I'm taking that to mean that the movies do not include:

• Black people

• Brown people

• non-American people

• Democrats

• LGBTQ+ Individuals

• Non-Christian religion

And if any of those ARE included, they are either tokens or played for laughs.

So is this basically a streaming version of that Turner channel that only showed colorized versions of really old movies? But less good?

Feminists. You forgot feminists. None of those working outside the home women or women who think they should have equal rights or who “talk back” or fight back against violence (unless, of course, her reaction is met with the “non-woke” approved response*.)

The original version of the  Tom & Jerry cartoons where the maid was black and talked in the stereotypical “mammy” voice and Al Jolson’s “The Jazz Singer” will probably be their premiere events.

*I just came across a documentary called “Girl 27” on Amazon. It is about *trigger warning* the rape of 17 year old Patricia Douglas in 1927 at an MGM event and how the studio insured her rapist would not be indicted. She was publicly identified by the press. The man who made the documentary found her and wove clips of old movies into her narrative in such a powerful way. I highly recommend the film but I will warn you that you will likely be outraged. I would like to see the film get more attention as I think it is an incredible view of how rape not only has and in some cases continues to be treated but how the survivor is impacted and how it can affect her family including future children.

I read The Women's Room about 50 years ago.  There's a line in it that's stuck with me all these years:  "Scratch a woman, find a rage."  Your discussion of this movie made me think of it.  Who among us doesn't have stories?  There's the bad date where the guy suddenly decided he's allowed to get handsy.  There's the creepy uncle who decided to start hugging you too close when you started to sprout boobs.  How many women haven been groped in a crowd or on a subway, hooted at by construction workers, leered at by men old enough to be your father?  Who among us doesn't know someone who was raped or otherwise sexually assaulted?

And we ended up with a president who bragged about groping and still got elected.  We're headed into handmaid territory and all those old behaviors are going to pop back up from the unenlightened male contingent.  TV's big daddy of the patriarchy, Jim Bob, minimized when his own son molested his sisters.  These were Jim Bob's daughters but he was willing to sacrifice them because they were just females.  If we can't get men to even protect their own daughters...  Good lord.  This is depressing.

Thanks for the recommend for the film and I'll watch but I doubt it will help my blood pressure.

I had never heard of the book but will seek it out. I know there is a book recommendation thread somewhere on the site but would it be possible for a movie and book recommendation thread for this particular part of FJ be started? “Girl 27” gutted me. I feel it should be required viewing in every 7th or 8th grade class. It is not graphic and in fact the details of the rape are mostly kept out of the documentary but what you discover as the viewer is still so heartbreaking. A short period of time in a 17 year old’s life changed her trajectory forever.  Every true victim deserves to be heard and deserves justice. Tragically, we are so far behind the curve that many, like Patricia Douglas’ rapist, died before justice could be meted out.

I have no words.  Kash Patel - a smart guy, where do people like him go wrong?  He was one of the people installed at the Pentagon for nefarious Trump specific purposes.  He traded a decent career trajectory to become a goon with a law degree, a back channel spy on things Ukrainian and water carrier for Trump.

For example, from WIKI: Within months of his appointment [staffer at National Security Council], it was suspected that Patel had assumed the role of an additional independent back channel for the President, which was seen as potentially detrimental to American policy in Ukraine.

But to write Trump propaganda in the form of a children's book? WTAF? I mean, WHO DOES THAT?

The more and more ridiculous this stuff gets, the more and more I wonder if there really isn't some sort of brain-melting subliminal messaging in the right wing news broadcasts, or something. Like, lead poisoning could sort of cover the Boomers going more and more off the deep end, but the younger people? Especially the non-white ones? Is there some sort of brain-altering drug getting passed around at Trump rallies or something?

I just cannot understand how any person with a functioning brain can believe any of the shit being shoveled here. There is something desperately wrong with people.

I think the brain-altering drug is access to power.  John Dean had a few words to say about this back in the day.

That (plus money) explains the people in Washington, but doesn't explain the rank and file MAGAts. They get no power, no money (they get to hand over their money, though), and the people like Trump at the top wouldn't so much as glance their way if they met in the street.

I know this is going to sound a bit conspiracy theory-like, but I wonder if Putin has dirt on these people and has threatened to ruin them if they don’t prop up the Mango Moron.  To me, it seems like that would help explain the absurd sycophancy from people who seemed like they were of at least average intelligence.

Magats feel insecure and powerless. They don't feel as if they have control over the changes in society. Their anger and fear has been stoked for decades by Republican propaganda and disinformation. So they really want to feel that they belong to the strong, powerful group that says it's going to do something about all the changes they are so afraid of. And once they feel secure in their loud, angry mob, they get the satisfaction of letting all their pent up angst and rage out. For them, it's not about the demagogues, it's about getting back at perceived slights, about having their voices heard, about owning those they hav been told are the cause of their fears. And that is their pay off.

It's exactly the same thing that happened in 1930s Germany. Fear is a powerful motivator.

Oh, I agree that somebody is blackmailing them. I'm not sure it's Putin per se.

I rather think it's a group of people behind it. Putin may be one of them, for sure, but the big money donors, both foreign and domestic, are the puppeteers behind the politicians.

Hey, he might have actually read the book! What's the reading level?

Is there a museum of propaganda? Because that's the only place this book belongs.

The thing is that I think Donald believes all of this now.  There was probably some point when he was grasping at straws and trying to figure out plots that were obviously illegal in order to stay in power, he understood that he'd lost.  Now that he's told himself for over two years that the election was stolen, he believes it.  He thinks people love him and that he is a king.

I know people believe that, underneath the surface, he knows that he's conning the rubes.  I'm not so sure.  I believe that underneath the surface there is nothing.  Just nothing.

Just saw this on CNN about Trumpery - which the authors use to describe the fornicate face style of running for office / governing.

Quote

The seven deadly sins of Trumpery

1. Disdain for ethics

2. Assault on the rule of law

3. Incessant lying and disinformation

4. Shamelessness

5. Pursuit of personal and political interest, not the public interest

6. Exploitation and exacerbation of division

7. Attack on democracy itself

Yeah that’s pretty much fornicate face to a T.

Trump shares CPAC Hungary platform with notorious racist and antisemite

Quote

A notorious Hungarian racist who has called Jews “stinking excrement”, referred to Roma as “animals” and used racial epithets to describe Black people, was a featured speaker at a major gathering of US Republicans in Budapest.

Zsolt Bayer took the stage at the second day of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Hungary, a convention that also featured speeches from Donald Trump, Fox News host Tucker Carlson, and Trump’s former White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows.

The last featured speaker of the conference was Jack Posobiec, a far-right US blogger who has used antisemitic symbols and promoted the fabricated “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory smearing prominent Democrats as pedophiles.

Bayer, a television talkshow host in Hungary, has been widely denounced for his racism. During the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, he wrote on his blog: “Is this the future? Kissing the dirty boots of fucking [racist epithet] and smiling at them? Being happy about this? Because otherwise they’ll kill you or beat you up?”

In 2011, he used the phrase “stinking excrement” to refer generically to Jews in England, and in 2013 wrote: “a significant part of the Roma are unfit for coexistence. They are not fit to live among people. These Roma are animals and they behave like animals.”

When he was awarded the Hungarian order of merit in 2016 by the country’s nationalist prime minister, Viktor Orbán, the star speaker on the first day of CPAC Hungary on Thursday, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum protested, saying it “reflects the longstanding refusal of the leadership of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party to distance itself from Bayer, in spite of Bayer’s repeated pattern of racist, xenophobic, antisemitic, and anti-Roma incitement”.

At the CPAC event on Friday, he appeared on stage with a prominent rightwing Hungarian screenwriter talking about gender issues. Bayer focused on deriding Calvin Klein for political correctness, comparing a 2009 ad featuring a white supermodel, whom Bayer called “a very hot woman”, with a 2019 ad featuring the Black rapper Chika who he described as “not so hot”, adding: “it’s clear that this ad was born under the aegis of Black Lives Matter”.

Addressing the conference by video shortly before Bayer’s appearance, Trump poured compliments on Orbán, who was recently elected for a fourth term as prime minister.

“He is a great leader, a great gentleman, and he just had a very big election result. I was very honored to endorse him,” Trump said.

The US thinktank Freedom House has downgraded its assessment of Hungary to being a “partly free” society under Orbán and the Fidesz party, noting “constitutional and legal changes that have allowed it to consolidate control over the country’s independent institutions, including the judiciary”.

It also criticised the government for anti-immigrant, anti-LGBT+ policies and curbs on the independent media universities and NGOs.

Orbán, like many American Republicans, has embraced the “great replacement” conspiracy theory, which involves promoting the belief that the white population is being deliberately reduced by leftist policies and diluted by immigration.

CPAC, which is organised by the American Conservative Union, did not respond to a request for comment on Bayer’s participation. Matt Schlapp, the CPAC chairman, complained on its website that: “Leftist media launched a coordinated smear campaign” on the event.

“Our mission is to increase freedom and opportunity across the globe, including for those living under socialist and Communist regimes,” Schlapp said.

“To hear the condescending whines from socialist boosters in the media like the Guardian, however, you would be led to believe that CPAC stood for something very different,” he added. “In the woke, warped logic of government-financed NPR [National Public Radio], somehow calls for liberty and national sovereignty are akin to racism and authoritarianism.”

Sounds like fuck knob tried to make a reappearance on Twitter.  Operative word is tried.

Quote

Twitter has shut down an account posting all of Donald Trump’s Truth Social messages for violating its rules.

The profile claimed the account @PresTrumpTS joined Twitter last month, but it appeared to be only days old when Twitter took action against it.

Trump was permanently banned from Twitter last year because of his role in in the 2021 insurrection. The company has a policy also barring banned users from dodging restrictions by ducking to other accounts.

Probably fuck knob thought his buddy Musk already owned the joint and he could open a new account there no questions asked.  Or whoever opened that account did, at any rate.
