Trump 54: A Grand Jury Has Been Called For The Former Guy!

Is anyone else watching the Trump speech right now?  What can I say?  I'm a glutton for punishment.  I watched the Gwen Lara memorial service earlier today so I figured I might as well end the day watching Trump.  Lara Trump just announced that, due to the young ages of her children, she won't be running for the NC senate seat in the next election.

Trump is doing his usual rambling stuff.  Remarked about how "good looking" Madison Cawthorn is.  Kept asking where he was in the crowd.  (Does he even know that Cawthorn is in a wheelchair?)  Rep. Ted Budd is getting Trump's endorsement to run for Senate.

Trump was supposed to start at 7.  It was slightly after 8 before he showed up.

His hair is even fluffier than usual and seems to be back to blonde.

He's giving himself full credit for the vaccine.  "We did things that no one has ever done."  (Yeah, doofus, but not the way you think.)

@Xan May Rufus bless you for all the recaps you have done today.

A little note from George that does concern me.

However, I'm hoping for the version that ends with bad guy and his allies being thrown in prison.

For what it's worth, he's kind of low energy and the crowd is applauding but isn't boisterous.  He's playing his old hits about how wonderful his term was and he handed this administration "the greatest economy" that the nation has ever seen.  He's called the virus "the Wuhan virus".  He's saying that the border is no longer protected.  "The economy is going to hell."  He's bumbled words now on then on the teleprompter.  He confused "defund" and "defend" and used both in them -- "They're going to defund and defend police."  ???  Gas prices are increasing.  Dems are increasing taxes.  He deported more of MS-13 members and no one could believe it.  He's making fun of "Rashida" and "Ilhan".  Snotty little face when he did it.

I'm not sure his schtick works as well as it used to.

Said that, if he hadn't pushed the vaccine, that we'd have numbers like the Spanish flu.  "One hundred million!"  For the record, I think the actual number was half that.

Oops.  Now Trump is bringing up Hunter Biden.  They Republicans had hoped that he wouldn't wander into Q territory.

Trump is saying that Biden took millions and billions from China.  He says nobody wanted to talk about it.  Says that the news cameras will shut off now that he's bringing up Biden being involved with China.

Bringing up corruption.  No -- not his own.  Biden.  Elections.  Lifting sanctions on Iran.  Says he would have made a deal with Iran in "one week".  (So, why didn't you, Clowny McStupid?"

Trump says he got along great with North Korea and with Putin.

ETA:  Now he's talking about how Democrats cheat about voting.  Sigh...

Rehashing the West Point/ramp story.  "It was a sheet of ice."  It was cold and rainy.  (No.  No, it wasn't.  It was a sunny day in June.)

Trump says he got South Korea to finally start paying for armed force protection.  Actually, Biden was the one who just recently got that deal done.

He's giving himself full credit for helping soldiers and veterans.  Is talking about soldiers' coffins coming home and himself meeting the parents.  (Did he EVER do that?)  Tells one of his "Sir" stories.  Relatives of dead soldiers "screaming, SCREAMING" over their dead children and the general tells him "Sir, you might see something you haven't seen before.  Sometimes someone jumps on a coffin."  Of course, he saw that.

I'm not sure I can listen to much more.  He is so full of shit.

"They want to take away your guns."  "They want to take about your religious liberty."

Wants to ban critical race theory.  Gets big cheers for this one.

Telling the crowd that Democrats want to give educational credit for students who attend radical demonstrations.  "They're wanting to spend millions and millions" to do this.

The Democrats "slander our country", "persecute their political opponents", and the New York radical left movement is trying to persecute him.  The prosecutors have taken in millions in campaign donations to "get Trump".

They're going after him for misspellings and missing commas in paperwork.  It's "prosecutorial misconduct".  Mueller hoax.  Mueller scam.  Witch hunt.  Corrupt investigations.  Fake news dossiers.

"Crooked Hillary Clinton" helped finance these scams against him.  They're just sending the old stuff back to the NY radical left prosecutors to find something else.

2020 election hoax.  He's winding down to his biggest grudge now.  Time Magazine bragged about what they did in November.  The election was "won" and then "vast amounts of votes" came in.  It was "a disgrace to our country".  Big applause.  They "stole the election".  He's praising the Arizona recount.  That election will go down as "the crime of the century".

"Thousands and thousands of dead people voted."  "Indians were being paid to vote in Arizona."

"Prosecutorial misconduct that's going on like no one has ever seen."  "I'm not the one who is trying to undermine democracy.  I'm the one who is trying to save it."

"We all know what happened with the election and we can not let that happen again."

"I love what they're doing in Texas."  He's onto signature verification now.

Will he never shut up?

9:30  - He's finally done.  Now they're playing "YMCA".  Why?  He doesn't hang around.  He's outta there.

ETA:  I forgot to add that, at some point, he said we should demand reparations from China for the virus.  Said if it hadn't been for his quick thinking and closing the borders, things would have been much worse.  Made fun of Fauci.

He will always believe that he won the 2020 election no matter what. Unfortunately I know a few people who believe this also.

@Xan

About the 1918 flu, I think you're right that the consensus number is usually estimated to be about 50 million.  Of course that was with three waves over 2+ years and we're only 1.5 years into covid, with no guarantee how many more waves there might be.

Other tiny detail, that estimated 50 million was global and he seemed to be referring only to US statistics?  Par for his course I guess.

Thank you so much for watching/listening so some of us don't have to. ?

That was the part that made the national news here. The rest got summed up as "Trump spoke to a crowd".

Tweet string re: Trump's "speech" from John M. Talmadge, MD, Professor of Psychiatry & Addiction

Quote

Rambling bullshit, calf splatter, “Sir” stories, & replay of old tapes from his 2017-19 rallies: wrecks, lies, & videotape.

Trump appears worn, like stale & moldy white bread, as he recites, re-litigates, ruminates, & replays delusional BS/CS. Worth watching only to confirm worsening dementia & paranoia. The decline into Trump family’s neurodegenerative disease continues.

Last week there were signs that CNN, NYT, WAPO et al. are beginning to look beyond Trump’s criminal psychopathy to expose his inability to reason, think normally, or carry on dialogue. The dementia renders him not only incompetent, but also dangerous.

He didn't have his pants on backwards but he was obviously wearing bulky incontinence gear.  Noel Casler worked on The Apprentice for years and and has noted often on twitter that even then Trump had major incontinence issues (poop) due to his Adderall and other addictions.

Casler brings the tea on the Trumps with every tweet,  #'s Trump on every tweet and he's never, not once, been threatened or called out by Trump.

If Trump continues these rallies, he risks exposing his mental decline even more.  I'd be curious to know if he's still playing as much golf.

Closed the borders? What a lying sack of crap. I was in a country that closed its borders in March of 2020, airports, province lines, highways…and they stayed closed except for very few humanitarian flights, until July. There was also a curfew in place from 2PM -5AM, daily, and in addition, restricted driving and outside activities (2Xs/week) based on your ID or car license plate number. These restrictions were enforced!  He is the King of revisionist BS.

A good one from Max Boot: "Too many people are still underestimating Trump"

Quote

Former president Donald Trump’s secret weapon has always been that it is hard for educated people to take him seriously. He acts like a preening buffoon with pretensions of grandeur — doltish and delusional in equal measure. Everything about him, from his orange tan and bad combover to his insistence that he is a “very stable genius,” screams: Are you kidding me?

How can we take seriously someone who insisted that taking hydroxychloroquine, or possibly injecting bleach, could cure covid-19? Or who keeps on claiming, as he did in North Carolina on Saturday, that the election was “the crime of the century” even though more than 60 lawsuits alleging election irregularities have been dismissed by the courts?

Now Trump is avidly tracking a cuckoo audit of votes in Maricopa County, Ariz., where a group of conspiracy theorists is looking for evidence of bamboo fibers to show that fraudulent ballots were shipped from Asia. Most bizarre of all, Trump reportedly now insists that he will be reinstated as president in August. Doesn’t this ignoramus know there is no reinstatement clause in the Constitution?

But while Trump is not a serious person, he is a serious threat to our democracy — and we make a grave mistake if we dismiss him as a punch line. We’ve committed that blunder before. Recall that the star of “The Apprentice” was driven to run for the presidency partly because of the ridicule he received from comedian Seth Meyers and then-President Barack Obama at the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Meyers even said: “Donald Trump has been saying he will run for president as a Republican — which is surprising, since I just assumed he was running as a joke.”

When Trump did run in 2015, most of the bien pensant refused to take him seriously. HuffPost initially announced that it was covering his campaign in its entertainment, not politics, section, because “Trump’s campaign is a sideshow.” (That decision was reversed in December 2015.) The Hillary Clinton campaign hoped Trump would win the Republican nomination because he was seen as so easy to beat. I, too, never imagined Trump would win a single primary, much less the Republican nomination, much less the presidency.

Trump benefited, even more than George W. Bush, from being “misunderestimated” by his opponents. The same has been true of many demagogues. For rational people, it’s hard to take seriously preening popinjays such as Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un or Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Like Trump, many of them have also been in denial about covid-19. Lukashenko, for example, said people could take a sauna or drink vodka to “poison the virus,” and Bolsonaro insisted Brazilians “never catch anything.”

Past demagogues have been even weirder. Turkmenistan’s Saparmurad Niyazov filled the country with golden statues of himself, banned opera and ballet, and encouraged people to chew on bones. Haiti’s Francois “Papa Doc” Duvalier dressed like Baron Samedi, the voodoo spirit of the dead, and forced schoolchildren to pray to him in a parody of the Lord’s Prayer beginning “Our Doc, who art in the National Palace for life.” Libya’s Moammar Gaddafi surrounded himself with female bodyguards in “camouflage fatigues, red nail polish and high-heeled sandals” and blamed calls for his removal on youths “fueled by milk and Nescafé spiked with hallucinogenic drugs.”

They all could have come straight from the set of Sacha Baron Cohen’s satire “The Dictator” or Charlie Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator.” But the joke is on us. What has made dictators and demagogues so dangerous is their ability to pull vast numbers of people into their personal delusions — to turn their paranoid fantasies and megalomaniacal dreams into a harsh reality for millions.

Trump has the same malign gift. Despite presiding over what was arguably the worst presidency in U.S. history — with 400,000 dead from covid-19 during his term and the economy in ruins — he won more votes in 2020 (74.2 million) than in 2016 (62.9 million). Now, even after having incited a mob attack on the Capitol, Trump enjoys the approval of roughly 80 percent of Republicans. A Reuters-Ipsos poll even found that 53 percent of Republicans believe Trump is the “true president” now.

If Trump runs again, he will easily win the Republican nomination. Despite his unpopularity with Democrats and independents, he might even win the presidency again — particularly if his opponent is not President Biden, a blue-collar White guy, but Vice President Harris, a woman of color who is a perfect target for his racist and sexist taunts. Even if he doesn’t return to the White House, Trump could provoke more political violence, as he did on Jan. 6.

I’m relieved that the news media are not covering Trump’s every inane and ignorant pronouncement, as they did in 2015 and 2016, because that only increased his appeal. But, please, don’t make the same mistake we made back then of assuming he is not a viable candidate for the presidency. His ability to hornswoggle tens of millions of voters is no laughing matter.

Even if it is a similar person to Biden again without the obvious incompetency of the covid-19 response Trump will probably win. It worries me how close he came even with that up front and centre, and if he wins again I think US democracy is done for.

The only chance of Trump not running again is if the case against him in NY ends up in a conviction and his sentencing is severe enough that he has to do some serious jail time. If he's free, it's a foregone conclusion that he'll be the GQP candidate.

In the meantime, the Dem focus should be on saving the democratic voting process of free and fair elections, and shoring up and enlarging their majority in the House and Senate to counteract the GQP undermining it.
