Spoiler

McConnell calls Jan. 6 certification his "most consequential vote"

In an extraordinary conference call this morning with fellow Senate Republicans, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said his Jan. 6 vote certifying Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election will be "the most consequential I have ever cast," according to a source on a call and two other sources briefed on the private remarks.

The big picture: The conference call came in the wake of Sen. Josh Hawley defying McConnell's wishes and publicly declaring that he'll object to certifying the electoral votes in Pennsylvania and perhaps in other states as well.

McConnell had previously urged senators not to force this vote, which he believed would put Republicans up for re-election in 2022 in a horrible position — forcing them to choose between defying the most popular politician in the party, Donald Trump, and undermining democracy.

His remarks to his conference are likely to escalate President Trump's anger with him for daring acknowledge Trump's defeat.

Behind the scenes: McConnell said on the call that the Jan. 6 vote is "a vote of conscience," these sources said.

A source paraphrased McConnell as saying, "I'm finishing 36 years in the Senate and I've cast a lot of big votes." including over war and impeachment.

"And in my view, just my view," McConnell said, "this is will be the most consequential I have ever cast."

"The context was McConnell saying we're being asked to overturn the results after a guy didn't get as many electoral votes and lost by 7 million popular votes," the source said.

Between the lines: Many Republican senators are furious at Hawley for forcing them to take what Trump is setting up as the ultimate loyalty test on January 6th.

On the call, McConnell asked Hawley to explain what he planned to do on Jan. 6, said a source on the call.

Then, Indiana Sen. Todd Young pressed Hawley on which states he planned to contest, and Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey defended the integrity of his state's elections.

There was just one problem: They were met with silence. Hawley hadn't dialed into the conference call — a fact first reported by Politico's Alex Isenstadt.

What's next: Hawley has no plans to back down from his decision to object to the certification of the electoral votes — a ploy destined to fail on Jan. 6.

I'm really worried about all of this.for the first time this year, I wish I had a time machine that would just get us past whatever nonsense is going on. I hope that as it's getting us past it would get us into a Biden administration but I still don't trust Trump even though it doesn't look like his ploy would win.

As an aside, could anyone explain to a non-native English speaker, why "Democrat" is considered pejorative?

Did any of this legal idiocy happen after the 2016 election?   Or is this a new level of crazy wtf-ery?  I'm not sure whether I should laugh or cry at these tweets, or be extremely concerned for the future of the USA (especially as there are parts of the UK seems to think that whatever you guys do is the best thing ever and must be copied immediately).

Some pissy Republicans started using it as a pejorative, so it caught on a bit.

It's basically for the same reason that "liberal" is as far as I can see - underlying it is the idea that if you don't consider some lives automatically privileged then you are an enemy.

Not in my memory. This is a bunch of snowflakes who apparently cannot accept that there was an election that their candidate lost in a perfectly legitimate fashion.

Up until the late '80s, as I recall, there was a law saying news hat to present both viewpoints. After the law was abolished, Rush Limbaugh and conservative talk radio started flooding airwaves, followed by Fox News. Since the news became heavily partisan, people's thoughts and opinions are informed by the personalities they hear. They repeat the be talking points until their listeners believe them and all other information is fake news. This also led to the villianization of the liberals.

What I meant is, somebody was making the point that the GOP lawsuit people were calling the Democratic party Democrat party and this is supposedly meant as a slam whereas Democratic party wouldn't be, and I don't really understand the difference.

Lin Wood is predicting a bad fate for Pence.

Ah, gotcha. Probably related to socialism being a nasty word, and all those democratic socialist republics. Although that would make more sense the other way around.

Thinking more, maybe it's just that they like the totalitarian nature of most "democratic republics" and feel the US should be like that, with them in charge (of course).

Maybe it's because they think "democratic" means "bought and paid for", whereas "Democrat" means "all eligible votes count"?

Rush Limbaugh started doing this on his radio show decades ago. His followers, who called themselves Dittoheads, picked it up and ran with it.

I can’t believe the Trumpers have made it to the “let’s shoot Pence” stage of this insanity.

I read that Pence is planning an overseas trip directly after the electoral vote is certified.

As much as I'm not a fan, I can't blame him for getting out of the country after reading this craziness.

I can’t believe I’m agreeing with Lin Wood! Because I too would love to see Pence and especially McConnell arrested for treason, and then have them confessing to everything... I would add all congressional trumplicans, plus Trump’s spawn to that list as well. And last, but not least, Trump himself.

That particular trip has been cancelled.

If you ask me, what we are witnessing right now is a schism between diehard trumplican believers and the mcconnelites in the party formerly known as the Republicans.

The tactic is to split the trumplicans away from the party so that the mcconnellites can act as if they were upstanding conservatives all along.

Do not fall for it. Trump would never have come to power without the mcconnellites, let alone remain in power after all his egregious acts— and never forget they acquitted him at his impeachment trial.

The Republican Party really needs to split and divide between the traditional GOP and the (moronic) populist/tea party mess that keeps trying to take over.
