  1. I had no idea who Joss Whedon is, until some stuff popped up on twitter, outing him as a self proclaimed feminist who had a secret life of many, many affairs while producing Buffy the Vampire slayers and other shows. His ex-wife does the best job of clarifying what he was up to with a double life. It's a painful read. Joss gives himself a pass. Her life was completely destroyed. And people are still paying homage to his false persona as a feminist supporting man. Joss Whedon Is a ‘Hypocrite Preaching Feminist Ideals,’ Ex-Wife Kai Cole Says (Guest Blog) ”He used his relationship with me as a shield … so no one would question his relationships with other women or scrutinize his writing as anything other than feminist,“ she writes
  2. Figured I’d start a thread for the purposes of enjoying misogynistic douche cannons getting what they deserve. to start (spoiler in case it’s nsfw) I think an incel’s weekend got ruined there.

    Good News

Some good news out of Dubuque. This ain't the first time Dubuque's been called to the carpet, as it were. The police department had to pay a female Captain almost two million dollars last year for sexual harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. One of the big reasons the verdict wasn't much larger was that the jury said they didn't see where retaliation had occurred. I hope things change in Dubuque since they've had to pay out serious cash more than once. Not too long ago the Fire Chief announced his retirement. At the time I didn't think too much of that but now I wonder if he decided to jump before he got pushed out for allowing an environment to persist that led to this suit.

    Misogyny And The Church

Think it’s the first time I started a topic! Well, in a long time, anyway. So. Saddleback Church - which is Southern Baptist Convention - ordained 3 women pastors. A very right-wing, nominally Lutheran radio talk show I listen to very rarely, spent a large chunk of its time spittin’ nails at how this is all — —Saddleback trying to stay relevant & newsworthy —men-haters trying to destroy the patriarchy —against not only St. Paul’s, but Jesus’ teachings (they never cited any of Jesus’ teachings except for the fact that His recorded apostles were all men) —and lest we forget: men-haters out to destroy the patriarchy. NOT. ONCE. Not ONCE! Did they ever consider the possibility that the 3 women felt the call to pastoral ministry and followed that call, just as they themselves did! Oh, I didn’t mention: The two boo-hoo’ers were both called & ordained Lutheran pastors. Memo to self: Blood pressure stays plenty high without listening to that cretinous show. So: stop, already.
  5. Ok, so I had a (long) conversation w/ someone I love this week about sexism within the church. About how my progressive church church is closing this location (it's a thing. I have to make some decisions once going to church becomes a possibility) and I'm not sure what the longer-term plan is. And part of that is that I feel profoundly betrayed by the protestant church as it exists as a cesspool of sexism. And part of that also means that fuck if my kid is going where the message says she's lesser than her male counterparts. So, long story short, I pointed asked how women in leadership are considered by his church--and he didn't know (to which my response was literally "why the fuck not?"). The conversation ended with "ok, as a joe Schmoe member of my church and a man, what could I do to make this seem more OK?" And ...I was blanker than I thought I should be. I said 1)find out what they say about it because there's no excuse not to know. And talk to authorities about how that's driving people like us away--and read a a book or 3 on the topic 2)attend a meeting. Amplify women's voices, shut up men who talk over us (and yes, I assured him that I could guarant-fucking-tee it was happening, he just hadn't noticed) and 3) find ways to promote women in leadership. Since this will be a conversation w/ follow up....since it was a genuine offer and I was caught flat footed...what would FJ suggest? If you had a well-respected, old, cis, straight, white dude wanting to be an ally against church sexism, what would y'all ask for? How could he not be a...I guess a paul?
  6. You'd think over in Europe they'd be a bit more evolved but I guess not. If I had the scratch I'd offer to pay the fine myself.
  7. More of that side splitting Republican humor
  8. The craft beer industry has a misogyny problem it had goddamn well better address. I’m not going back to Indeed or buying its beer anytime soon. I don’t care what sort of apologies they offer either. Around here that sort of bullshit would never fly. All the owners I know wouldn’t put up with it.

  10. Thought I’d start a thread to cover misogyny in the legal system First some good news. He’s a fucking disgrace to the profession and needs to lose his judgeship.
  11. I have been a part of two churches in my life: One was a toxic church which drove to seek fundamentalism in my teens as my parents insisted in being of part of it. The other was a perfectly decent and kind church that was pleasant for me, but this experience drove me away from church due to my family’s drama. At the former, my parent’s excuse was that they felt like they were “missionaries” to that church. I am starting to realize more and more that my parents’ determination to be the “true Christians” in their churches is a way for them to bond in an otherwise dysfunctional relationship. Of course, the fact that they were/kind of are still participating in such a strange mission is quite a dysfunctional act itself. Although it was hurtful at the time, it’s been fascinating in retrospect how they would twist bad behavior of my dad sometimes into attacks of satan through people in the church. While it was annoying my mom stayed with my father, I am grateful she would call him out on most of his shit. But sometimes, things went very awry... As silly as this sounds, I have a hard time sharing this story with my husband because he already has such strong opinions about my parents, but I remember my ex at the time was a lot more sympathetic to my family and he was astounded at this situation: My dad apparently was checking out a woman at church (no surprise). This took place at the good church, the one I went to as an adult with family. So my mother thought the only logical explanation for this particular situation was that... the woman is a witch. I know. The most embarrassing part? I believed it for a minute. Now, this turned into what is an almost 4 year long battle. I quickly realized what bullshit it was after the first couple of months, but I have since been neutral in appearance and intensely skeptical on the inside. I once even went to my church’s parking lot in the middle of the night one night to “anoint” a place the woman would usually stand with frankincense and a prayer so she would leave the church. Oddly enough she didn’t come to church for several months. Anyway, it’s all completely ludicrous and I am ashamed of my brief participation of what is basically an out-of-control coping mechanism for my mom. But things kept getting worse: my mom believing this gal put curses on people in the church, how she would not walk past the woman so she herself would not get cursed. One time, service was over and I was in the front of the sanctuary talking with the only other person my age in the entire congregation. My family have always been backseat people, and they were gathering their things there and talking with various folk as everyone filtered out. I noticed my parents come and sit towards the front, a little ways from where this girl and I were standing. They both looked annoyed, so I ended my conversation to see if they needed to talk with me (my brother and I drove separately from them most of the time so there was no need to leave together). No, the “witch” was standing by the exit speaking with the pastor, and they did not want to walk past her. I KNOW. Now, I do not care for this woman in the first place. She does come off as ingenuine and there is something that rubs me the wrong way, but I do not possibly think she is witch. What I disbelieve even more than that is the power she could have on folks in the church if she was. I quit attending regularly after an incident that deserves it’s own blog post took place, but I have gone periodically since. One time during one of these visits I was in line for food talking with a family friend and the gal was standing near me, so my mom comes up behind me and puts her hands on me and says “I’m protecting you”. No, you’re not mom. You’re protecting your false sense of security by demonizing this woman. And you wonder why I won’t go to church with you.
  12. For a grand you can go see a bunch of douche cannons in action Fornicate these guys. Maybe if they didn’t act like such fornicating douche cannons women and people in general would like them.
  13. Sweet Rufus! Apparently he's been taking her for years, so he subjected an underage girl to a medically unnecessary invasive examination to check if she's still a virgin. What kind of a father does that? What kind of a mother would let this happen to her daughter? And what kind of a gynecologist would agree to perform it? T.I. 21. Good I bet cash money this guy is much like Kavadouche.
  22. I bumped into this one after following a link in the comments section of the Boyer blog. Racheal (sic) is a SAHD who appears to be friends with a lot of our usual suspects. She's also a Civil War reenactor who wants to let us know that slavery is totally biblical. This isn't just a jaw-droppingly bigoted post, it's also an incredible SODRT fail. She cites a bunch well-debunked Lost Cause talking points to argue that slaveholders were actually really good people who taught their slaves to read and gave them all sorts of nice things (apparently "that's why we have slave spirituals," as if black folks couldn't come up with their own musical traditions). She cites the Reconstruction policy of "40 acres and a mule," which Southern whites fought tooth and nail, as if it were something Antebellum slaveowners were doing all the time just to be nice. And she posts a picture of a man whose back is covered in scars from brutal whippings and asks us, in all earnestness, "what did this man do that warranted that?" In a later post she complains that she can't bring up these totally legit points without people picking on her for being a Christian. (Yeah, that's why they disagree...) Of course I shouldn't be surprised by stuff like this. They keep it a little more hush than the misogyny, but their leaders are people who idolize out-and-out white supremacists like R. L Dabney and R.J. Rushdoony. This whole movement is the perfect embodiment of "I'm not racist but.." "I'm not racist but those people are going to outbreed us." "I'm not racist but I don't want my kids exposed to the crowd at our local public school, you know what I mean." "I'm not racist, Planned Parenthood are the real racists!" "I'm not racist, I'm just honoring my southern heritage!" Here's an IFB church in Texas that at least admits what's on their minds (this one is really... something else, holy shit): https://www.applebybaptistchurch.com/articles.html I'm not sure where I'm going with all these damned links except to say that I'm tired of this thing where we tiptoe around ever calling anyone a racist even when presented with overwhelming evidence. I know that not every single conservative Christian is boiling with personal hatred towards people of other races. Obviously. But they ought to mind the company they keep, because this whole movement is absolutely soaked in old-time racism. I wouldn't want to associate myself with institutions or thinkers who come with that kind of unacknowledged baggage, but maybe that's just me. Anyway, in case anyone's reading this and thinking "well, can you really prove that this is going on?" Yes. We have the receipts. See above, and I'm sure the rest of you can link me to more. Oh, and if you need a palate cleanser, this speech by the mayor of New Orleans is a wonderful example of how we can grapple with our nation's difficult history with grace and moral fortitude. You won't regret reading it.
  23. I found this on Reddit. So infuriating. If you didn't notice (I didn't at first) the woman's and girls' wrists/arms are bound with xmas lights. These poor, poor kids. Especially the girls, but the boy may not have a great childhood either, if he doesn't measure up to his sick fuck of a father's toxic ideas about what boys and men should be like.
