The War On Abortion And Women's Rights

There's a march being organised on October 2nd. I plan to attend.

I know there's an argument, and it's a valid one, that marching does very little, and it's boycotts and hitting them in the pocketbook is what counts. I do think they have value in the form of giving people a voice and encouraging them to use it. I see the many women being elected in 2018 as a result of the 2017 marches and the election of The Orange Menace. So, while I do not expect the forced birthers to wake up on October 3rd and say, "Wow, there was a lot of people there, best change course now," I think there's still value in maybe firing up the woman who will be the next RBG or Stacey Abrams.

I was walking on the beach and met a tourist from Georgia. I said to her, "I read in the newspaper 94% of Georgians are registered to vote, that is great". They said no, they hate Stacy Abrams and they don't want all the people registered to vote "because they are Christians".

Pardon me while I go vomit. What does being Christian have to do with voting rights? I hate people.

I’ve talked about my volunteer work here before, as a clinic escort and as a case manager for an abortion fund. This bill makes me so so sad for the people who it will impact. I talk to people seeking abortions all the time. Many times it takes weeks to get an appointment (and that’s here where we actually have a decent amount of clinics and no waiting period). It’s EXPENSIVE. The lowest price I usually see is $425. For many people, asking for them to come up with that amount within days is just not an option (I’m in a decent spot financially and even for me that would be a hit). It’s hard enough to figure this shit out without a ticking time bomb or a bounty hunter.

My heart hurts for the homeless, the low income, the people in IPV situations, all the people who will be impacted by this horrible, cruel law. People will die because of this.

@closetcagebaby thank you for the excellent work you do. I've considered volunteering as an escort many times, and ultimately decided that I was a bad fit because I'd end up using my favourite word at protestors. I'm glad people like you exist in the world. ❤️

It’s hard! One lady gave me a sidewalk exorcism which was quite an experience. It’s definitely hard to not respond depending on your personality. Luckily I’ve been in customer service for ten years and have a good poker face. 😂

You should see if there’s a local abortion fund near you! I almost guarantee they need help and it’s all done from home - lots of options for how to help, too. You can be a case manager and work with patients directly or just do data entry. It’s a good way to support the cause without dealing with protestor dicks.

Do you know how to tell? Do I just google (my location) abortion fund, or is there a website that I should be looking for? I found my local NARAL a bit ago, but I didn't see any fund information (Admittedly I only did a cursory glance 'cause work time came.)

I would take "because they are Christians" as code for "because we are conservative racists" most likely. They don't want everyone to vote, they only want the "right" (read "white, christian, conservative") people to vote.

I know Trump asked about buying Greenland - can we sell off Texas? Though Mexico would probably be like "no takesies backsies!" I guess.

No offense to the "good" Texans out there. I'm sorry it seems you're outnumbered.

Thanks! I'm not only in a new state, I'm in an entirely new region, and while I knew where to look for this stuff before, I don't now. I appreciate the info!

I will give Texas this: it's a creative way to get what they want: forced birth. Evil and horrible, but creative.

Seriously though, creativity aside, I can't imagine who thought this was a good idea. Separately from the OMFG GROSS and invasive and evil problem, I can't imagine that this isn't going to end up hopelessly bogging down the courts.

From what (little) I understand this was kind of the point. Because the state is not involved in enforcing the law, it’s all put on private citizens, it puts the law in this nebulous no man’s land. This is what the Supreme Court used as a reason not to stop the law from going into affect.

* not a lawyer, this is my understanding from what I’ve read.

Back in college I volunteered for a rape crisis hotline the class they offered took place in a Planned Parenthood conference room.  When I'd come to the class I was surrounded by protesters and they focused on me because I looked really young.  I always felt like I was helping deflect them from the real women who were in crisis.  Funny thing is they never noticed I was such a harlot that I had an abortion twice a week for six weeks.

I think it's going to be hard to find an OB-GYN in Texas. Can you imagine spending all that time and money becoming a doctor/surgeon and have this nonsense law where any asshole can sue because you abetted someone "considering an abortion"? There's no doctor-patient privilege either. Surely the doctors will bail. Wouldn"t you?

GoDaddy just told the Texas Reich to Life to go fuck itself.

Quote

In case you haven’t heard, Texas now has a law that makes it illegal for anyone to help women get an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy — and to take advantage of that, the anti-abortion group Texas Right to Life is encouraging citizens to report those people at a dedicated “whistleblower” website, promising to “ensure that these lawbreakers are held accountable for their actions.”

However, it now looks like Texas Right to Life may have trouble keeping a home on the web, because hosting provider GoDaddy has given the group 24 hours to find a different place to park its website. “We have informed prolifewhistleblower.com they have 24 hours to move to another provider for violating our terms of service,” a spokesperson told The New York Times and The Verge.

GoDaddy didn’t answer a question about whether that applies to the group’s other domains, but tells The Verge that it violated “multiple provisions” of the site’s Terms of Service including Section 5.2, which reads:

You will not collect or harvest (or permit anyone else to collect or harvest) any User Content (as defined below) or any non-public or personally identifiable information about another User or any other person or entity without their express prior written consent.

Republicans in six states rush to mimic Texas anti-abortion law

Quote

Republican leaders in as many as six US states are rushing to follow the lead of Texas in adopting an extreme abortion ban that critics, including Joe Biden, have slammed as unconstitutional and built to encourage vigilantism among the public.

Abortion rights advocates are bracing to resist a flurry of initiatives from Florida to North Dakota in the wake of the new Texas law, the most extreme in the US, which the conservative majority on the supreme court refused to block.

On Wednesday, the law went into effect in Texas, banning abortion past six weeks of a pregnancy, including for victims of incest or rape, and giving any private citizen the option to sue someone providing an abortion or anyone even believed to be peripherally assisting someone to get an abortion.

Within a day of the law going into effect, six other states – North Dakota, Mississippi, Indiana, Florida, South Dakota and Arkansas – have said they are looking to adopt a similar ban, according to numerous reports.

The late Mr. Xan used to say "there ought to be a list".  In the case of the forced-birthers, he said that anyone who worked to outlaw abortions ought to be willing to sign to take babies given up by birth parents.  At the very least, they ought to be willing to provide money and time to make provisions for these children.  With rights come responsibilities. For example, if you're deciding that you get to tell some woman that she has to carry her rapist's child, you have to agree to take that child and raise it as your own.

People who truly believe that every embryo is a person should be glad to raise the child.  But the majority of forced-birthers aren't really pro-life.  If they were, they'd be against capital punishment and for gun control.  These people are just anti-woman.

.....

I think any state that enacts this legislation should also strictly control drugs for impotence.  If women have to leap hurdles to control their own bodies, so should men.  No man should get a Viagra prescription unless his wife or significant other has given their signed approval.
