@formergothardite : I too appreciate your posts. They're like getting shaken by your best friend after doing something really stupid, where the stupid something is believing the Bates are less dangerous than any other IBLP family, or fundie family in general.

Here's the deal: when you watch a fictional movie, t.v. show, read a book, etc. a villain is a villain they're rotten to the core. Everything they do is despicable. In real life things are hardly that black and white.

It's one of the reasons people will stay in an abusive situation, because they are well aware of the "redeeming" or positive qualities of a person's character. "You just don't know them," etc. The problem is, the good can't outweigh the abuse or the problematic ideas. 

Gil and Kelly might actually be more affectionate with their children. We don't know. That doesn't negate that they chose to raise them in an oppressive cult that regulated gender roles and limited their capacity to enjoy a full life or make informed decisions about what they want for their futures. 

Michelle Duggar might very well be deeply loved and appreciated by her children. She might be a fantastic listener or an awesome advice giver. Who knows? It doesn't negate that she helped cover up her son's abuse of her daughters instead of advocating for them. It doesn't change the awful child abuse, neglect, and the cult activity. 

Gil Bates might be a fun dad when he goes outside and plays with his kids like he does. That's probably a lot of fun. I bet he's a lot less fun when he's "correcting his children" for stepping out of line and covering up abuses for his favorite cult. 

Maybe Bill Gothard is fun to play chess with or tells a great joke. It doesn't negate what a horrific and soul destroying individual he is otherwise.

I could go on, but I think it's obvious. The Bates are more enjoyable to watch because they have personalities that don't make them seem actively drunk in kool-aid land like the Duggars do. Props to them for having fun while slowly dying inside. They might even be all those things that people like to point out - nice, fun loving, family oriented, etc. It's just important to remember that this is an advertisement for the cult. 19KAC as far as the Duggars were concerned, was an advertisement for the cult. 

"Join us. We're going to save your family from worldly troubles like divorce, pain, and sexual deviancy. We are going to take you back to the good times when people lived real Christian lives and we will help you build quality individuals for Christ in your children." That's their goal. 

They're brainwashing you.

I couldn't have put it better @lizzybee . In fact, I think I'll share this post with a leghumping co-worker. In her eyes, the Bateses (and the Duggars) can do no wrong because Jesus and the fact they they (at least appear) to love their kids. Sometimes people can be good and bad and one doesn't cancel the other out.

Lizzybee is correct. The Bates aren't going to be 100% evil, but the good things they do don't make up for the bad. For anyone who might still be on the fence about this family, go look at this thread and realize these are the beliefs they support. The empire with these teachings is the empire that Gil is helping to lead.

Josie has an Instagram account. It's private and it says she has 3 posts. Zach and Whitney are following her. So, in addition to Carlin, she has her very own account. Neither girls, I presume, are courting, so I wonder if Gil and Kelly are letting the young adults get Instagram with their permission?

They are probably only following family and approved friends. I know of non-fundie parents who do that for their underage children's social media.

I saw that Josie had one when Norma Roberts wished her a happy birthday and Josie responded.  The Roberts used to visit the Bates in the past.  Wonder if they're still close.

Signs Corruption is tired: when you accidentally read this as Josie Duggar, freak out and then remember there is a Bates' Josie. Not to mention you're reading a Bates' thread.

I had assumed that Lawson could have his own account because he was male, but I was pleasantly surprised to see Carlin and Josie have accounts. It's Instagram, for heaven's sake, not a Pornhub account. I feel that if any of the teenage Bateses or Duggars want Instagram, they should be allowed to have it.

I'm guessing that change is also happening because almost all of their non-courting peers appear to have their own Instagram/social media accounts. Aren't the Duggars (and the Bateses, up until recently) the only ones not letting their non-courting older teenagers and young adults have social media accounts? I don't think that's very common even among the ATI/IBLP crowd at this point.

I am going to apologize right now for putting this in anyone's head.  I don't know if anyone else has heard it like I do but I bet you will now.   When I hear the BUB theme song I hear the line "All we need is time for memories. I'm talking about family.... ",  as " All we need is time for mammaries."  It makes me giggle and think yeah Gil your interest in mammaries is what got you where you are, we know you made plenty of time for them.

The first couple of times I heard the theme, that's exactly what I heard.  I had to keep rewinding it because I knew that's not what they were going for.  Lol

Kelly said on the show she wanted Ashley at the party because she was a big part of the family.  She also mentioned Nathan wanted her there.  They still appear to be friends or at least on speaking terms.  Then Gil says because they courted and not dated they can still be friends.  Because if you date then that's just sinful

It's so nice that close family friend Ashley flew over 700 miles to attend a family graduation party. 

But seriously, I find this strange circumstances for them.  If your son is as heartbroken as Nathan seemed to be about the end of his relationship, would you invite his ex to a family party?  They're probably hoping for a reconciliation.

The graduation party happened in early May & was filmed at that time. Nathan visited Ashley in NY over the Memorial Day weekend in late May. The scene about the break up aired around July 4th.  I suspect that Nathan and Ashley were still a couple when UP filmed the graduation party but since they've officially broken up she was pretty much edited out except for a few scenes and Kelly's 'explanation' was filmed later. 

We know multiple Duggars were at the party including Josh & Anna & kids - did anyone see a Duggar in the crowd shots? I didn't but am not good at spot that fundy.

@sndral There was a preview for the break up episode posted on the batesfam.blog on May 18th.  They were at least broken up by Memorial Day Weekend. A fan who went to that birthday bash said that she didn't see Ashley and Nathan interact at all.  It doesn't mean they didn't but it sounds like it may have been an awkward situation.

I don't think they fudged the timelines much. The party happened also around the time the episode of their courtship being announced was aired. If anything Kelly made sure Ashley was there to add surprise to the show that they broke up.

This party is also where it was leaked the Bobby and Tori were a couple.

On a completely different note. @VelociRapture, I hope your Velocibaby is doing well and your pregnancy is smooth. I have to say I got out of work late and checked to see if you did a recap. Your recaps are missed greatly! 

P.s. I don't know or under and how my phone correctly suggested Velocibaby, either these site bots are amazing or I spend way too much time here. Thinking it's the latter.
