I think lots of people want to free Jana.

I sort of suspect they're all content not to be freed. But I just want to see one, any one, leave the fold.

Except josh. I don't give a fuck if he leaves or not. He's still disgusting.

What if JB or M got  free? Not going to happen, but wouldn't that be fun to see? Imagine the fall out when they realized they'd been following a false god (Got hard).

I've heard there's sexual fanfics about the fucking sorting hat. There's people with weird tastes, ans then there's that

Sorry to contribute to thread drift, but I have to address this.

Everyone knows that the Sorting Hat ran off with Scarf of Sexual Preference. That's just a straight up fact. Also everyone please go watch the A Very Potter Musical series so you will know what I'm talking about.

I heard about the Dramione fan fic fairly recently, and I have to say, I kinda ship it.  There's just something about the Bad Boy getting with the bookish girl... ;)  Also because I don't think Hermione and Ron belong together.

This is probably blasphemy for someone who likes Harry Potter as much as I do (a LOT in short) but I really disliked AVPM. But I will grant you my only two experiences with it were being forced to watch it by a group of guys I despised and a few years later I was new in my current city and I went out to dinner with people I had met including some I had just met that day and two of them started SCREAM-singing that "gotta get back to Hogwarts" song in the middle of a crowded diner while nearby patrons just tried to eat without their eardrums popping. So. Not great experiences.

Perhaps the point is that they need to free themselves.  And that won't happen until they realize they want more than what they have.  Jessa may "leave the fold" gradually, as she discovers other options and learns to be an independent person.  Of the others, I don't know.  I see problems with substance abuse and self harming a possibiliity in the future of the younger kids.  Would that count as "leaving the fold"?

As for Josh, his only hope of becoming a decent person would be to leave the fold, voluntarily entering therapy and acknowledging  that just begging Jesus's forgiveness and following Daddy's plan for him is not going to fix things.

Jana, I don't know. I suspect she is deeply invested in believing that their parents are great, that their family is special, that the TV show was God's reward for her parent's faith. She may not want to live the life her parents led, but she may see this as her weakness.

If a nice mainstream Baptist with his own dairy farm or landscaping, or contracting business were to become interested in her, and managed to get JB's approval to court, maybe such a marriage would "rescue" her.  As she does seem to be intelligent, she might be free of Gothard without being blamed because she would be following her headship.

It would be the best one can reasonably hope for.

Was this also the guy who "bought" Jinger's car?

No, the guy who "bought" the car was an actor friend of someone in production.

Don't worry I am sure she won't disappoint! Pretty soon the Boob will surrender his authority and the the real Jinger will be unleashed. The Good Lord knows what treats we are in for!

Yep. Jinger likes to preach to unsuspecting people stuck next to her on planes. That makes her an asshole by definition.

I think that, like a lot of things, whether substance abuse or self-harm constitutes leaving the fold may be subjective. Let's say one of them becomes an alcoholic (and I mean actually, not just like has some social drinks). If they continue to preach Gothardism or other fundie beliefs and eventually get caught and go to prayhab, I would say they haven't left the fold. Goodness knows Josh didn't leave the fold just because he has an adultery and porn "addiction".

But if they develop, say alcoholism again, and realize they are on a destructive path, and seek real and effective help, acknowledge their traumas/shortcomings/choices (whichever wording is most appropriate for the particular struggle they have) and seek to rectify the problem rather than "seeking Jesus" as the answer? Yes, I would see that as leaving the fold.

I've always secretly hoped to get on a plane with one of them (well, it would have to be at least several I guess but you know what I mean). I'm always down for an earnest religious discussion... but they wouldn't much like what I have to say! And I'm guessing they couldn't keep it civil when they learned they were sitting with/speaking to an evilllll atheist.

I actually read Masters of the Universe because my friend kept raving about 50 Shades of Grey and I didn't want to be seen with that book in my house. I cannot believe the fuckton of money that story made the author.

Re: My Immortal, I think the author insisted it wasn't a parody, but there's no way it wasn't,  in my opinion. I shamelessly read a lot of fic. It has to be a joke.

It would almost be worth riling them up and getting an even more overzealous version of their Jesus pitch just to see the looks on their faces when I tell them I'm an atheist.

There is a local butch/femme queer performance artist couple who've done an act based on this. They're super hot and always a pleasure to see on stage. The butch even uses the stage name Draco MuffBoi. #relationshipgoals

Actually, come to think of it, I think the femme in the couple may have dressed in drag as Harry Potter once, and they enacted that bit of homoerotic fan fiction. Either way, I love their sexy geeky burlesque acts.

I have always found religion quite interesting and I am (I hope) very tolerant of people's beliefs and I genuinely enjoy hearing from people on the matter and discussing it with them. I just happen to not believe it myself. But something tells me that would not fly with Jinger or most of the other kidults. I mean can you imagine Bin having a real, honest to goodness conversation with an atheist? (And he may not be a kidult by blood but he sure is by definition)

This ticks me off so much. 50 Shades of Grey was modified fanfiction that got this woman amazingly rich. Book deals AND a movie. I like to write all sorts of things, from male characters struggling from infertility to female antagonists, and I know I have a higher chance of making a living if I peddled badly written erotica. As soon as I finish the story I'm working on, you bet your biddies I'm going to write soft porn for cash.

LOL!   I write soft porn for cash.   It doesn't pay as well as you might think.   Unless you some how hit the best seller list and get a movie deal, I assume.    BUT if you find a publisher that pays more than mine.....share the info!

And how does one get into that line of work? Legitimate question. I was a writing major lol I could write softcore if I ever needed extra cash. Heck I could probably write hardcore.

To add insult to injury, ELJ is apparently a known major asshole in the Twilight fic community, and her fanfic was actually ripped off from someone else's erotic Twilight fic. I once read this epic post detailing her history and it was pretty illuminating (not a Twilight fan so never in that world, but I know a lot of people who used to be). Asshole, for sure, but a smart one. She knew what she was doing from the beginning and the success of 50 was no accident.

What really burns me is how, thanks to 50, publishers now routinely pay for fanfic with the serial numbers filed off. There are people out there who work on their craft, create their own characters, and publishers instead chose the ethically questionable route and pay for borderline plagiarism.

Just like any other job - you write and submit and someone eventually gives in and says "Fine.  We'll put your book out and give you money."   and I have a kinky little imagination.    Don't tell my kids....

I won't tell a soul haha. Interesting though. I've thought about using my degree to actually write... I went to law school instead...

Self-publishing is huge, but so many people are doing it that unless you have a built in audience not many are going to find your work. You need to find your way into romance/erotic writing groups and connect with readers on twitter. Research what's selling, let people get to "know" you (don't be that author who's obvious about using social media for promo), get other people to hype your book (again, without being annoying with constant promo), and you might get lucky.

Sounds like Courtney Milan.  Check her out!  I think she was a chemist too though.
