I've never done it in this situation, because I don't like the plan. Having used it before, it releases in a cloud, not a direct stream, so it's a perfect way to mace my own dog and myself in the middle of it...rendering me a lot less capable of dealing with any aftermath as I'm there howling about my eyes and skin and making me either incapable of logical decisions or decisions at all, depending on the hit I took. Plus I'd dread the damage it would do to my own poor girl.

There are a lot more effective ways to deal with dog attacks. In fact, I've found a swift kick to be one of them. Not recommended but...it worked in the moment!

You could also try carrying a "shakecan" with you.  It's an empty soda can with about 15 pennies in it, taped closed, and shake it at the dogs to break their focus.  The sound may distract them long enough for you to get out of the situation.

Has anyone seen the newest Mom's Corner?  According to Teri, depression is just a matter of (lack of) self-control.

If you go to bed early and get up to read your bible before the kids get up apparently you will cure your depression.

She also gives a different version of her Pepsi addiction.  In this version she felt guilty about the wasted money and calories, rather than feeling Pepsi came between her and Jesus.

Jesus help her. Please. Getting up early reading bible and being a Maxwell might lead someone to depression

No, Teri depression isn't due to a lack of self control.  Living in Maxhell causes depression.

This morning my dad said that getting out of bed early can help with depression.  :confused2:

When I worked in a rural area with a stray/feral dog problem, I'd go jogging with my iPod in one hand and a brick in the other. If I was coming up on an unrestrained dog that wasn't ignoring me, I'd just brandish the brick and usually that would be enough to get them to back off. I only had to actually use the brick once when a dog ran straight at me and was inches away from biting me. Broke my heart to hit him because I love dogs, but when a dog is snarling and snapping at you and is just one slip of the arm away from giving you a mauling, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Is it really reaching a fundraising goal if the only people you hit up for money are your parents, aunts, and uncles, and they toss in whatever cash they have on them in the moment?

I'm not snarking on the kids - it's nice that they want to raise money for the needy (however sketch the actual charity might be, the ABCs don't know that and it's not their fault). I'm snarking on Sarah for writing about it that way.

What is their obsession with Christmas shoe box or whatever it is? Surely, there are other things they could be interested in. It's kind of sad. The Maxwell contribution to society is a once a year lemon poppy-seed loaf to the neighbors and candy and purses to foreign kids. Teri and Steve cannot honestly be okay with their adult kids living at their parent's home teaching the next generation of Maxwells to do nothing other than read the Bible 5 times a day. I take that back, Teri and Steve wanted this outcome and worked hard for it. It's upsetting.

I find that getting out of bed early does help with my depression--partly because it helps give me some structure to my day (which helps) but mostly because it gives me a chance to benefit from good sunlight that can help  (especially in the winter months). When my kids were little, getting up early helped give me some time to gather my thoughts and be mentally prepared for the day before the chaos ensued.

So it really does help me with my depression--but so does my anti-depressant.

Of all the things I dislike about the Maxwells, their lack of community and charity work bothers me the most. Because if they spent a good part of their week donating and sorting food at a food pantry, bringing meals they'd cooked to homeless people, and cleaning a local preschool for lower income children, I might be able to pass off their other ridiculous rules (no contrasting buttons, non-mixed gender church volleyball games) as people who truly believed in an incredibly strict interpretation of the New Testament and just disregarded social norms.

But their lack of doing anything that Jesus actually commanded his followers to do shows me that this is all about Steve and power, not trying to follow someone they believe to be the Messiah.

Seriously, there are seven able-bodied, essentially retired adults in that house and they do absolutely jack shit for anyone outside their own family. Think of how much good they could be doing for Leavenworth. It drives me absolutely mad. I really wonder what those Maxwell children think when they read about the apostles being sent out by Jesus in Matthew 10.

I know we snark on the duggars for doing those El Salvador missioncations, but at least they do them. Plus they've done stuff like the fish fry or whatever, although whether that was mainly for TV or not I dunno.

For people who claim to love the Lord and serve Jesus, they sure do serve themselves a lot.

Extended family, perhaps.

Also, in that post about Snugars and Gracious May, Calia was wearing a sleeveless dress. With no t shirt underneath. She did have a fricking ENORMOUS pink headband on... but then again that's what she was advertising.

She is a hussy, plain and simple.

This times 100.  The Maxwells are just modern-day Pharisees, pontificating and pointing fingers.

I am glad other posters mentioned Joseph and Elissa. I was also wondering why we rarely see them. If they were still living the  Maxwell way I think they would be around more often. I wonder if there was some type of falling out. Maxwells aren't supposed to have friends or pretty much do anything that doesn't involve Steve. So what could they be doing? Did they move out of town? They can't be leaving town for every holiday.

The Maxwells are loaded for bear this year. In addition to the usual slightly-misleading "Free Soda" tent, they have a whole new set of GrandMaxwells to parade around, Lolly the Modest Clown, PLUS... Ellie! Between the sea of Maxwell Moppets 4 Jeebus, the awkward gyrations of Anna as Lolly, and whatever dreck they decorate Ellie with, they'll be pulling in the souls like nobody's business.

If I were at their county fair, I'd probably give them a wide berth, even if I hadn't heard of them. The Free Soda sign would make me wonder if there was a catch. Plus I'd be able to see what's going on with the whole tract-giving/the Maxwells talking to others.

Anyway. I think it's terrible to make a small child think about where they go when they'll die. A child cries- they're thinking about the reality of Hell? NOPE. They're crying because some scary old man is talking to them about DEATH. Not what they came to the fair for. They came to the fair to have FUN... but then I suppose the Maxwells are trying to prevent that as much as they can seeing as fun is forbidden. God I hate the Maxwells.

They gave up on the free soda booth.  I think renting a booth and giving away soda got too expensive.  The last few references to the fair have been about arming themselves with balloons and tracts and wandering around looking for juvenile victims.  Sarah prefers arming herself with $5 bills and offering them to female teens to "win" if they can get all the 10 commandments right.  One of these days she'll get mugged.

They never take the kids to the fair because of the dreadfully defrauding way people dress.  I really hope they don't take Ellie.  She would be a kid magnet for sure but she'd probably get heat-stroke.

IIRC, nightmare Lolly was "assisting" a church by giving out coupons.  The church was unnamed, of course, but was probably the one where they borrowed the baptistry. If Mary is face-painting this year (that's a new one) she will probably need a booth of some sort, unless she is doing it with unnamed church too.

I live in hope that all the Maxwells will be escorted off the fair grounds for pestering people without paying for a booth.  A mass arrest would be even sweeter, but my better side wouldn't wish it on the girls.  Steve though ... there is nothing creepier than Steve hanging out in the food court offering kids balloons. http://blog.titus2.com/2014/08/06/sharing-christ-part-4-steves-thoughts/

I wonder if that's how they get away with going to the fair, one of them dressed like a clown, and giving out tracts?  By aligning themselves with a church, I mean.

I have trouble picturing any fair just allowing people to come in dressed as clowns and bothering their customers.

There needs to be an update to the stranger danger video with a segment Beware of Lolly the Clown. She will try to convert you to her brand of Christianity. Just say no to tracts. She is not a real clown. Run away.
