I guess courting a girl with actual things to do is a gamble. A bored SAHD will jump at the chance to court anyone and will go through with it no matter what because she wants to get the hell out of her parents house and have a life of her own. Nathan needs to give Nurie a call the minute she turns 18.

Nathan would need to ask Kelly and Gil for permission first.  And I see no way on Earth, or any other planet which could sustain life, that permission would be granted.  Jill R. as an in-law...not.

Gil and Kelly are one of the few people I would wish Jill Rod. on. They kind of deserve her as payback for all the awful stuff they have done.

During the first(?) special, Josh and the Holt girl were shown playing broomball together, and Michelle talked about them getting to know each other--"courtship" wasn't used, just that they were getting to know each other but "NEVER alone!" in order to "protect their hearts"[/MichelleCrazyEyes]. They never talked about it since, and for all I know they might have deleted all sights and mentions of the Holts from subsequent re-airings, but there was definitely a thing there. My guess--courting wasn't a thing in their circles back then as we know it now, and maybe they were slightly less strict then in that they were letting teenagers get to know each other a bit if they showed an interest. JB and Holt were friends then and they probably fantasized about starting some sort of fundie dynasty via their kids, but I'd like to think they weren't seriously pushing their 15 year old into an eventual marriage.

I agree with all of this. While Ashley is a fundie, the difference between her and the Bates are huge.She has a lot more freedom, for one thing. So on top of having to live in a small town, she's getting to know this family that--even if really nice to her and not obnoxiously mocking her love of NYC--is so different from what she's used to. These people are going to have to be her friends, because who the hell else is she going to meet in the boonies? No matter how similar their religious beliefs are, can she really talk to people who can't go out by themselves and meet people without a chaperon? I think Ashley likely romanticized the mega fundie family from the country until she got to know them and figured out that the reality was not for her.

I'd wish them on JB and Michelle too.  They deserve some sort of payback for allowing their daughters to live with a sexual predator.

Hi everyone, I've been reading for a while, but finally decided to join. I don't want to talk too much about how I know this, other than my family is friendly with the Bates family, but actually Nathan and Ashley are actually courting again (well, more like still). I'm not too sure whether they had an actual break or not (I've been trying to distance myself from my family, so the information is slow), but I was talking to my sister about this when I was back home this weekend, and she told me that they are back together. 

I think they will either use the break up to show that they are like regular people, and also show them coming out of it stronger together.

I know that the two of them spent Memorial Day weekend together (as documented on social media).  I'm sure the breakup episode was filmed before then.  Maybe they're one of those on and off again couples (I have known several throughout my life).

I must ask, what are they like in real life?

I just don't understand what would possibly compel her to go back to him. Their lord works in mysterious ways, for sure.

Thank you for sharing what you know.  Some of us believed that they're still together based on her being with them for Carlin and Trace's graduation party and Nathan visiting her family for Memorial Day.  Hope the temporary breakup wasn't just some manufactured drama for the show.

Thanks for this. You know, considering how they went on and on about how Kelly and Gil broke up several times before getting married, the break up being a gimmick for the show doesn't at all surprise me. Maybe not a complete gimmick...say, they did sort of break up, Nathan told his family privately, and by the time they were ready to recreate the talk with his parents for the cameras they had already gotten back together but they decided to stick with the storyling for the drama.

I don't know Ashley at all, but I grew up in Tennessee, and knew the older Bates kids (although I must say, I knew girls better than the boys). But they were all always polite and nice. I have to say, they were much quieter than they appear on TV. I never liked them so much, because I felt my mom wanted me to be like them, and in her head they were perfect little children, while I.... well wasn't.. I'm still quite resentful about that

But then his tears weren't real? its hard for me to believe he is so good actor.

I do wish them well if they are back together, hopefully whatever issues they had can be worked out.  His tears and upset nature seemed awfully real to me.  He sounded and looked heartbroken

Tbh I'd love to send the Rod clan to the Duggars.... At least then, having in-laws who serve vats of unappetizing food means they might get a decent meal now and again....

Yikes. I wouldn't wish the Rods or the Schraders on anyone. That would mean the Bates children had actually married into those families... I shudder to think what the boys in those families are going to when they're older-- it's not like they have good examples.
